This is a little treat for fans of The Archers, Emeric Pressburger and Michael Powell. It’s a short film about Powell at Dartmouth working with the students to put together a short film based on The Earthsea novels by Ursula K. Le Guin. He was a fan of the novels and had a script for a full film and the approval of the author but finding fell through and all we have are these fragments. From what they managed on the student budget I think it would have easily been one of the best fantasy films of the 80′s.

This is why Bernie Bros are better than Trump supporters, they’re smart enough to delete the phone recordings.

“A child free from the guilt of ownership and the burden of economic competition will grow up with the will to do what needs doing and the capacity for joy in doing it. It is useless work that darkens the heart. The delight of the nursing mother, of the scholar, of the successful hunter, of the good cook, of the skillful maker, of anyone doing needed work and doing it well—this durable joy is perhaps the deepest source of human affection, and of sociality as a whole.”
— Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed

Nestle should be liquidated. If you have actual former fucking slaves testifying against your company for its exploitation and abuse of child slave labor there is no logical reason, other than profit, to be allowed to continue business. This goes for any business engaging in human rights violations—oh wait, there goes every billion dollar multinational corporation.

As he breezed into Soho House, Bong spotted “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” director Céline Sciamma, who was snubbed by the Oscars but came to town for her single Spirit Award nomination. He handed her his Best International Feature statue. “You should be holding this,” he said. The DJ turned up “Hits From the Bong” as the filmmaker slid into a mosh pit of Korean peers, programmers, and marketing executives, most of whom work far from traditional Hollywood. (x)

“This is like the future. You made this. You made it for us all.”
Nonetheless, Sciamma was there to celebrate with Bong, Quinn and the Neon crew at the company’s after-party at West Hollywood’s Soho House. Later at a Korean barbecue restaurant, Quinn said, Bong stood up and gave a speech in which he praised Sciamma for the success of her film in South Korea. It has collected $894,000 there, according to Box Office Mojo, more than any country other than France. (x)

I never used to believe that the internet had destroyed my humor but Neil Cicierega’s garbled Lord of the Rings names proved that I really will laugh at anything
