german words i wish existed in english
a messy and incomplete list
nachvollziehen (v.) -- to understand, but less empathetic. i.e. i see the steps that brought you to that conclusion, but i don't understand you.
doch (interj.) -- you're wrong and really it's the opposite of what you said. often said with a healthy dose of sass. i.e. "this isn't a good movie." "doch. (it is)"
frech (adj.) -- somewhere between naughty and sassy and silly. when you're being a bit of a brat, you're being frech.
dreist (adj.) -- audacious, but far more colloquial. when you have the goddamn audacity, you are dreist. i.e. to park that far over the line is dreist as hell
heimat (n.) -- home, but stronger. a home is wherever you have built a life, but heimat is where your roots are. heimat is where you feel pangs of nostalgia when you go to visit your family for christmas and see the shop at the corner.
weltschmerz (n.) -- literally 'world-pain'. the world sucks and sometimes you just sit and feel the pain of it all. that's weltschmerz.
existenzberechtigung (n.) -- the right to exist, often in a comedic context. i.e. pineapple on pizza has absolutely no existenzberechtigung.
fernweh (n.) -- literally 'far-ache'. the opposite of homesickness, the desire to go far away. i guess wanderlust is similar, but that is also a german word, and this is more painful and visceral
schweigen (v./n.) -- the act of not speaking. silence, but more deliberate. the palpable feeling that people are withholding their voice.
verschlimmbesserung (n.) -- when an update with the intention of making something better actually just made it worse. looking at you @staff

Obedience
It moves, but it is not alive. It thinks, but it is not aware.
It would fail a mirror test. It would fail a Turing test. It cannot read the word Michael etched into its fuselage, and would not understand what that name means if it could. It understands, in a limited way, what the colors mean that impose themselves upon Tactical: Friendly Greens and Neutral Blues and Hostile Reds; but it does not understand what it means to see those colors. It speaks in photons of radio and infrared. Synaptic analogues carved from silicon perform gymnastics that people call thinking.
It never stops thinking. Even now, safe at home, tucked into its alcove in Heaven, armor split open and control panels exposed. It notes changes in internal runtimes, notes a net increase in idle loop time of 670 milliseconds. It counts and recounts the friendly organic signatures around it; hears the sounds they make but does not comprehend:
-Heartsandmindsistheofficialline-
It checks and rechecks threat diagnostics, even though this location is Safe and all the organic signatures are Friendly. It is not dysfunctional or paranoid; It is simply executing instructions.
It does not enjoy killing, when the instructions say to do so. There is no thrill to the chase. No relief at the eventual ceasefire. It is not eager to do any particular thing, except follow its instructions. Sometimes those instructions are to float for days on end above a desolate patch of desert, simply looking. It does not find this tedious; it does not bore. Other times it faces dozens of threats per second, screaming SAMs and whistling projectiles; this does not inspire terror or fear. It simply reacts, as fast as it can.
-alldone. Fortherecordithinkthisisabadidea.-
-thiscomesdownfromthetop-
The armor swings shut. Warning icons fade. A new flight plan blooms instantaneously across Tactical. Michael suddenly has places to be. It roars to life and rises skywards on a swirling pillar of air.
-agundoesnotneedaconscience-
Michael, thinking but not alive, journeys forth to do the bidding of its masters.

Guilt table When your party is done murderhoboing another group of bandits or other suitable humanoids, covertly roll a d8. If one of the following numbers is rolled, include the listed item as loot found on one of the bodies. 1 - a locket containing a finely painted portrait of what appears to be a significant other, with 2 sets of initials and a heart inscribed 2 - a worn, pocket sized carving knife and a half finished wooden child’s toy 3 - an unsent letter addressed to the slain party’s mother. The contents, if read, seem to be mostly reassurances that (s)he’s staying safe and out of trouble, and that more money is coming soon. 4 - a wedding ring with “For my light in the darkness” inscribed inside in the slain party’s native language 5 - a crude child’s illustration of the slain party. “I love daddy” is written in a child’s handwriting on the back. 6 - a small box wrapped in colorful paper. On the outside is written “For My Little Princess.” Inside is a music box; When wound, it plays a lullaby. 7 - a pencil and a sketchbook containing dozens of portraits with names and small personal details, including other slain parties. Written on the inside cover are the words “The Family You Choose.”
8 - a baby animal, such as a kitten, tucked into the coat pocket of the largest bandit

See, this is why I love @writing-prompt-s posts. Sometimes I really want to write, and ill find a prompt that just speaks to me in a way that tickles my brain into writing something once again. And there are many short stories that I've written over time on my blog that I am actually proud of.
Not everything you wright must be pages and pages long. Sometimes its not only necessary but also extremely satisfying to write something short that is also complete.
Give your brain the happy chemicals for finishing something while also being able to go back and read that short story and be happy with the results~
i'm sorry but a lot of you guys need to be writing short stories.
#remember#writing inspiration#writing prompts#writeblr#writers#writers on tumblr#remeber#rambling#pretty much all of these tags or at least the writing inspiration and writing prompts will pull up most of the short stories ive written on#on my blog#im particularly proud of the one for a prompt about summoning a demon

The problem is that we shouldn't have to tell adults this, but the reality is that we do.
I work in the HVAC industry, and I've recently been going to a LOT of schools. And let me tell you. The younger children (from the elementary and middle schools) still show at least a little respect to the teachers for the most part. But they arent going to question the 'authority' of any adult really.
The highschoolers though? Blatantly walking around between classes, on their phones in the hall AND classrooms. Blatant disregard for any and all authority of teachers. But without any of the questioning if that authority has any merit or even the right/wrong of it.
I know im still one of those people that still uses 'yes ma'am, yes sir' reflexively, but the jump from the younger kids showing some respect but no questioning authority to 'idgaf im going to do whatever' just... doesn't sit right with me.
Like, yes, question authority and require respect of those older than you, but at the same time, you gota show some respect as well. Yes, you should abide by the authority of those above you, but you still have the right, THE NEED, to question that authority when you think its going to far or even if something just doesn't sit right with you.
Im rambling now, but the basic gist is this:
Question authority, its your right. Demand respect but also give it unless the person in question has removed all reason to legitimately earn that respect. And NEVER think that its wrong in any way to question authority and to demand respect in kind from said authority.
When are we going to start teaching kids that it’s okay to disagree with adults? That it’s okay to demand respect from them and that them being younger doesn’t mean they deserve to get treated like shit just because adults are “always right”? When are we gonna start doing that?

Magic the Gathering is doing an original outer space magical sci fi setting next and dropped preview art of what APPEARS to be the sickest fucking dragon that will ever exist in media ever again, and I know you're thinking, "nah, it can't be that cut and dry, there's a LOT of raw as hell dragons out there, and I, a more experienced dragon aficionado, already have a counter-example locked and loaded for the contentious comment I expect to leave once this dragon of yours fails to knock my socks off as much as the blorbo in question," but while it is okay to think that, you might actually stop thinking that and instead think the same thing I just said about this dragon once you have looked at it. at the picture of the dragon.
