Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji on Alcohol Consumption

The Gurbani is a gift bestowed upon us by our Revered Gurujis and it also prohibits alcoholic drinks. Even the Sikh Gurudwara Act 1925 prohibits those who consume alcohol from voting in SGPC elections. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is above everything else for any Sikh and is held in a very high esteem by every Sikh but this Scripture is becoming an object of ostentations and people are gradually sliding away from the actual meaning of the words of our Gurus.

Below are some Banis from Sri Guru Granth Sahib which every drinking Sikh should pay heed to so as to be called a True Sikh.

Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGS) page 1377 – Kabir Sahib ji

ਕਬੀਰ ਭਾਂਗ ਮਾਛੁਲੀ ਸੁਰਾ ਪਾਨਿ ਜੋ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਖਾਂਹਿ ॥ ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕੀਏ ਤੇ ਸਭੈ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥੨੩੩॥

कबीर भांग माछुली सुरा पानि जो जो प्रानी खांहि ॥ तीरथ बरत नेम कीए ते सभै रसातलि जांहि ॥२३३॥

Kabir bhang machli sura pani jo jo prani khanhi Tirath barat nem kiye te sabhi rasatal janhi ||233||

Kabir, those mortals who consume marijuana, fish and wine, no matter what pilgrimages, fasts and rituals they follow, they will all go to hell. ||233||

Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGS) page 1293 – Ravidas ji

ਸੁਰਸਰੀ ਸਲਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਰੁਨੀ ਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਕਰਤ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਨੰ ॥ सुरसरी सलल क्रित बारुनी रे संत जन करत नही पानं ॥ Sursari salal kirat baruni re sant jan karat nahi panan

Even if wine is made from the water of the Ganges, O Saints, do not drink it.

Asa Mehla Pehla Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGS) page 360 – Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ गुड़ु करि गिआनु धिआनु करि धावै करि करणी कसु पाईऐ ॥ Gur kar gian dhian kar dhavai kar karni kas paiai

Make spiritual wisdom your molasses, and meditation your scented flowers; let good deeds be the herbs.

ਭਾਠੀ ਭਵਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਾ ਪੋਚਾ ਇਤੁ ਰਸਿ ਅਮਿਉ ਚੁਆਈਐ ॥੧॥ भाठी भवनु प्रेम का पोचा इतु रसि अमिउ चुआईऐ ॥१॥ Bhathi bhavan paren ka pocha it ras amio chuaiai ||1||

Let devotional faith be the distilling fire, and your love the ceramic cup. Thus the sweet nectar of life is distilled. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਵਾਰੋ ਨਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸਹਜ ਰੰਗ ਰਚਿ ਰਹਿਆ  ॥ बाबा मनु मतवारो नाम रसु पीवै सहज रंग रचि रहिआ ॥ Baba man matvaro nam ras pivai sahj rang rach rahia

O Baba, the mind is intoxicated with the Naam, drinking in its Nectar. It remains absorbed in the Lord’s Love.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਬਨੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਗਹਿਆ  ॥੧॥ अहिनिसि बनी प्रेम लिव लागी सबदु अनाहद गहिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥ Ahinis bani prem liv lagi sabad anahad gahia ||1|| rahao

Night and day, remaining attached to the Love of the Lord, the celestial music of the Shabad resounds. ||1||Pause||

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪੀਆਏ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥ पूरा साचु पिआला सहजे तिसहि पीआए जा कउ नदरि करे ॥ Pura sach piala sehje tiseh piaeae ja kao nadar kare

The Perfect Lord naturally gives the cup of Truth, to the one upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਦਿ ਛੂਛੈ ਭਾਉ ਧਰੇ ॥੨॥ अम्रित का वापारी होवै किआ मदि छूछै भाउ धरे ॥२॥ Amrit ka vapari hovai kia mad chhuchhai bhao dhare ||2||

One who trades in this Nectar – how could he ever love the wine of the world? ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਪੀਵਤ ਹੀ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਇਆ  ॥ गुर की साखी अम्रित बाणी पीवत ही परवाणु भइआ ॥ Gur ki sakhi amrit bani pivat hi parvaan bhaia

The Teachings of the Guru, the Ambrosial Bani – drinking them in, one becomes acceptable and renowned.

Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGS) page 554 – Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਾਣਸੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਆਣਿਆ ਮਾਣਸੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਆਇ  ॥ माणसु भरिआ आणिआ माणसु भरिआ आइ ॥ Manas bhari aania manas bharia aae

One person brings a full bottle, and another fills his cup.

ਜਿਤੁ ਪੀਤੈ ਮਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਰਲੁ ਪਵੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਇ  ॥ जितु पीतै मति दूरि होइ बरलु पवै विचि आइ ॥ Jit pitae mat door hoe baral pavai vich aae

Drinking the wine, his intelligence departs, and madness enters his mind;

ਆਪਣਾ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਧਕੇ ਖਾਇ  ॥ आपणा पराइआ न पछाणई खसमहु धके खाइ ॥ Apna paraia na pachhani khasamahu dhake khae

he cannot distinguish between his own and others, and he is struck down by his Lord and Master.

ਜਿਤੁ ਪੀਤੈ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ  ॥ जितु पीतै खसमु विसरै दरगह मिलै सजाइ ॥ Jit pitai khasam visrai dargen milai sajae

Drinking it, he forgets his Lord and Master, and he is punished in the Court of the Lord.

ਝੂਠਾ ਮਦੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਪੀਚਈ ਜੇ ਕਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਇ  ॥ झूठा मदु मूलि न पीचई जे का पारि वसाइ ॥ Jhutha mad mul na pichi je ka par vasae

Do not drink the false wine at all, if it is in your power.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਮਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਇ  ॥ नानक नदरी सचु मदु पाईऐ सतिगुरु मिलै जिसु आइ ॥ Nanak nadir sach mad paiai satgur milai jis aae

O Nanak, the True Guru comes and meets the mortal; by His Grace, one obtains the True Wine.

ਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਹੈ ਮਹਲੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਥਾਉ  ॥੧॥ सदा साहिब कै रंगि रहै महली पावै थाउ ॥१॥ Sada shib kae rang rahe mahli pave thau ||1||

He shall dwell forever in the Love of the Lord Master, and obtain a seat in the Mansion of His Presence. ||1||

Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (SGGS) page 1001 – Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਹੋਛਾ ਮਦੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਹੋਏ ਤੁਮ ਬਾਵਰ ਦੁਲਭ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਰਥ  ॥੧॥ होछा मदु चाखि होए तुम बावर दुलभ जनमु अकारथ ॥१॥ hochha mad chakh hoe tum bavar dulabh janam akarath ||1|| You taste the weak, insipid wine, and you have gone insane. You have uselessly wasted this precious human life. ||1||

Guru Gobind Singh ji too said that  Kutha meat, tobacco, alcohol, chakras, ganja, tari, cap, khakoo, should never be used by Sikhs. (Rehat Nama, Bhai Daya Singh)

Denounce the debarred and become a True Sikh - Tread on the way to prosperity.
