Music has always been a HUGE part of my creative process. I’m always vibing out to something while drawing. So naturally I end up drawing artists because they be serving LOOKS! Trust me when I say there’s SO many more I want to do!

Some are finished, some are works in progress, some are YEARS old. But I hope you all enjoy because the way my style has GROWN!

Sketch To Final Reveal!

One thing I love is color block clothes! There’s just something about that pop of color that gets me! So naturally I had to draw Lola Brooke in this fit. I enjoyed rendering the material of her outfit and being mindful of the areas that called for a super light or dark value. Even with the sunglasses it was rewarding to figure out how much variation in value and hues was needed to capture the reflection of an environment. I’m really happy with this addition to my blue series and only have one more left!

Let's Draw!

One of the biggest challenges I faced was capturing a generally light valued image. I was mindful to swatch and consider how various colors would look next to each other. The hair was the main area I felt I could really push vibrancy.

Using colored pencils on top of markers helped with capturing form and really carving out certain areas like the material of the shorts and the shadows of her top.

At first I was hard on myself about how this turned out. I know it doesn’t look 100% like the image I referenced of India Love . But once I let go of that, I can appreciate how I blended out the markers and my ability to capture form and the overall pose.

Recently I started watching Peyton Maree Charles on YouTube. She's hilarious, she can sing, and it's incredibly healing to see how she interacts with her daughter and uplifts and empowers other women.

Here's the process for how I drew her using Procreate. Lately using the lasso tool to create hard and soft edges has been my go to. I've also enjoyed using different brushes to help create texture. Like the noise brush for the brightest highlights on the skin. Happy to say that I've been in a really great spot with my art lately. I decided to let go of trying to make my art look how I thought it should. Instead I just let it evolve in whatever direction it's going, and this has made my process that much smoother!

This morning’s face study✍️ This is currently a WIP and I plan to add some color with markers. At the moment I feel rusty AF because I haven’t been able to draw as consistently as I’d like to😭. I definitely had to remind myself what I learned about the human skull and using the standard model throughout the process of this😮‍💨. Which means a lot of erasing, checking myself whenever I start to get frustrated about how I want something to look and instead focusing on my experience and energy while creating. Another day, another face study😅 I’ve been thinking more about the relationship I have with my art and the experience I want to create for myself. Lately I’m inspired by artists who fill up a page in their sketchbook, with whatever they want really. I’ve built a rhythm of working on bigger fully rendered pieces for so long that I forgot how satisfying it is to just sketch something, leave it a little unfinished, or even how subtle washes of color can be satisfying and just enough. For this face study WIP I decided to go the traditional route. There’s just something about the feeling of graphite, markers or whatever medium it may be, being used on paper. The rhythmic hand movements and feeling of materials on the chosen canvas can be really relaxing. Decided to incorporate more of my style into this face study. Although my main goal with these is to improve on anatomy, I want to make sure I nurture what I’ve been learning about color palettes and lighting as well. For this face study I decided to work in @procreate. I’ve mostly been doing these traditionally, but I wanted to see if I can build on my relationship with understanding the human skull, digitally as well. Turns out that by using a mechanical pencil and marker brush, which resembles what I usually use traditionally, I can still work on getting better.🥰 I’m sticking to doing front profile at the moment, but once I feel confident that I’ve gotten the hang of it, I’ll try more challenging angles☺️ Check out my Patreon to see more face studies that I’ve done and to learn more about my process.
