INKTOBER DAY 19: ANTIQUE, Sherlock Holmes in 'The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez'

Tried something a bit different, using text from the story in the background. This version of Holmes is based on the illustration by Frederic Dorr Steele.

I said I'd start posting my sholmes sketches here. Figured I'd start with the one and only Jeremy Brett! :D Mini study I did for his birthday last November!

Sherlock, by nature, requires far more human contact than Mycroft does. But Sherlock has idolized his brother to such a degree that he didn't simply try to keep up with him on an intellectual level; he also tried to emulate the personal distance that Mycroft has from others.

And Mycroft encouraged that. He genuinely thought that it would protect his little brother from being hurt.

In ASIB, when he apologizes to Sherlock for driving him into Irene's path, I think what he means is that he should have known. He is sharply reminded that his brother is vulnerable to getting involved with people.

And then Irene informs them of how Moriarty calls them "the Ice Man and the Virgin", which suggests that unlike Mycroft, who truly manages to distance himself from humanity, Sherlock is simply inexperienced. And Sherlock actually looks mortified when she says that; he is usually quite indifferent to people's comments about his sexuality, but here Irene is essentially saying that Sherlock wants people right in front of Mycroft. And even though he would never admit it, Sherlock very obviously cares about his brother's opinion of him. And that's when Sherlock makes his grand "sentiment?" "love is a chemical defect found on the losing side" speech; the speech is of course meant to tear down Irene, but it's also meant for the ears of Mycroft. And Mycroft is alarmed (the shooting script mentions that he is concerned about the way Sherlock got the victory). Did schooling Sherlock about the disadvantage of caring truly do him good?

Well, in any case, despite Sherlock loudly announcing that he now got the final proof that love is a disadvantage, Mycroft knows better than to think that Irene just stopped mattering to him. That's not how his brother's heart works. As shown when he meets John in the cafe, he sees that Sherlock has chosen a profession that would get him involved with people far more personally than his own occupation does, and that says everything (although Sherlock is not conscious of this).

One detail that I love in this flashback is that Mycroft, impeccably dressed, sits against Sherlock's side on the mattress.

Mycroft is a very fastidious character. Sherlock is willing to wade through skips or dead blokes' dirty underwear if a case requires it, but the elder Holmes doesn't have his brother's bravery in this area. Yet here he is, sitting on an appallingly dirty, disgusting mattress that must smell horrible. And there's zero need for him to do that; he could have just reached down for the list. But he chose to sit with Sherlock.

wanted to challenge myself with this one a bit so this is the result lol I‘m not the biggest fan of how it turned out but I wouldn’t say it‘s bad either🦧

I find the fact that Sherlock keeps a picture (possibly many!) of Rosie on his phone, and shows it to Mycroft of all people, endearing and inexplicably touching. I never once believed their claim of having "a difficult relationship", or the more widespread theory of them being "estranged" siblings anyway, but this melted away what little doubts I could've had.

Sherlock wouldn't share such a private, precious, proud part of his life - in such unguarded, childlike eagerness - with anyone he wasn't incredibly close to. He wouldn't look forward to (and be offended by) the response of anyone he didn't have extremely high regard for.

This one little scene screams family in a way few other things do. :)

This is Sherlock complaining about his bossy, controlling sibling. But this is also Sherlock knowing damn well who took care of him.

I just realized the pillow that Sherlock is laying on has the same design as the wallpaper that we all know, which is on the wall behind the couch.
