There is something so adorable about that happening so late in the series. Because it's true... Merlin's previous battlewounds have been burns, poison, etc. But never blood. And most of these things Arthur doesn't even know about.

And Arthur's mind instinctually goes: I've been watching you, always. This is your first wound and maybe you're freaking out about it, so don't worry it's cool actually. I don't care that I've had worse wounds. We're not moving until we took care of it! I won't move until I took care of you.

Merlin: seriously? The good shirt!!!!

Arthur:(internally: why is he so calm? He should be freaking out! That's a serious wound! Have embarrassed myself? I imagined this moment differently) don't worry, you can mend it.

Arthur's definitely spend sleepless hours at night imagining how to react if Merlin ever got hurt. And now he's confused af because it didn't go as planned.

people who are right now helping each other survive via connections they initially forged by liking the same sailor moon girl or something

“Merlin,” Arthur asks, tilting his head curiously as he soaks in the tub, finger absently caressing the mark painted onto his skin where his shoulder and neck meet. “Why do you never show your soulmark?”

Merlin doesn’t look at him when he answers, just focuses on plucking dirty tunics from the floor. “You don’t show your soulmark either, sire.”

Arthur huffs. “That’s not the same. I can’t. But if I weren’t the prince of Camelot, I would be showing it off everywhere. Most people do. Aren’t you worried you won’t find your soulmate?”

Arthur has always been proud of his soulmark, has always known that when his forever came along they would be remarkable. Merlin has kept himself so modestly covered since arriving in Camelot that Arthur can’t help but be curious about the mark he must be hiding… until Merlin tells him that he’s Unmarked.

But then Merlin becomes injured and unconscious, torn cloth at his neck, and Arthur pulls it aside to view the wound–and finds his matching soulmark instead.

So Merlin does the only thing he can – he stays. Stays, and loves his golden prince from afar with a ferocity that scares him more than the flames ever could. Protects his soulmate with his magic, his body, his life – giving, giving, giving to the man who could never give Merlin his heart in return – to the man that was never Merlin’s to keep.

He tells himself that being his servant is enough. That loving Arthur from afar is enough. Will be enough.

After all, Merlin is nothing but a fantastic liar.

arthur will act as dumb as rocks and pull the stupidest most sacrificial shit in the world that will make you want to bang your head against something but he does it because he has so much love and goodness and his blind recklessness has always been borne from bravery and good faith. he always puts himself on the frontlines even though it could mean certain death because he embraces the weight of his crown and believes in justice and courage and. arthur is just so so good we love you arthur pendragon

so many ways u can take this . well meaning mentor just tryin to push their student. snippy rivalry to sudden concern when they fall over. frustrated teammate at the end of their rope snapping and feeling horribly guilty afterwards. UGH I LOVE IT theres so much u can do with it
