HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY
THE BASICS
Location: Scottish Highlands, United Kingdom Student Body: Between 1,500 and 2,000 students split between four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin Student Ages: 11 years through 18 years Magical Specialties: Defensive Magic, Potion-Making, Enchantment
A BRIEF HISTORY
Founded by Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, Salazar Slytherin, and Godric Gryffindor sometime after the mid-tenth century, Hogwarts has provided the United Kingdom’s magical students with a world-class education. The school is located in the isolated moors, providing ample space for students to develop their magical abilities in a secure environment. The school was closed between the years of 1998 and 2004, where the school repaired itself with the aid of former students and staff alike. Students at Hogwarts typically hail from the United Kingdom and surrounding European countries, familiarity with the English language being a pre-requisite. A train ride, a boat across a lake, and thestral-drawn carriages are all used to bring students safely to school at the beginning of each new year. The school’s four founders are most notably present in the school’s four houses where students are assigned in a ceremonial Sorting. The campus is notoriously anti-electronic, so students resort to more antiquated pastimes such as inter-house Quidditch and magical chess to pass the time. Their required uniform of traditional wizards robes are black with additional coloring based on the students’ assigned house. Prefects-- chosen from the fifth year onward by their heads of house-- have additional badges to signify their status. Students are permitted to be out of uniform after dinner and on weekends, and once monthly all students third year and above are permitted into the magical hamlet of Hogsmeade that exists just outside of school grounds.
CLASS STRUCTURE
Each of the Hogwarts houses provides a student with classmates and sometimes, lifelong friends, as they attend classes paired with varying houses within their year. Examinations at the end of each school term are used to gauge a students’ aptitude, and fith-year Ordinary Wizarding Levels lead to Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests, which are then used to determine a student’s proficiency in the magical career of their choosing.

               MAHOUTOKORO SCHOOL OF MAGIC
THE BASICS
Location: Minami Iwo Jima, Japan Student Body: Between 3,000 and 4,000 students Student Ages: 8 years through 18 years Magical Specialties: Magical Theory, Enchantment, Illusionary Magic
A BRIEF HISTORY
The reality of just how Mahoutokoro came to be is as shrouded in mystery and misdirection as the school itself. Legend states that a dragon from the moon was tamed by Seimei, the first wizard of Japan, and that the island upon which the castle itself sits rose up from the sea when summoned by the wizard and his companion. The school appears to be a well-kept if somber Shinto temple to the untrained eye, allowing those without magical abilities to wander the campus freely without realizing what, exactly, takes place right in front of them. Being so densely populated, Mahoutokoro has been a day school for the past half a century, offering magical trains that depart from the island and arrive wherever the students are due home rather than dormitories for their students. As a result, the students attending Mahoutokoro appear more restrained than others around the world. While their focus is excellence, and there is no shortage of fun-- Mahoutokoro is well-known for their Quidditch fanaticism, and the school boasts no fewer than a dozen teams for intramural play. Robes of Mahoutokoro students mimic the fashion of traditional Japanese kimono, and are enchanted to grow with each student, changing color whenever their experience with magic grows. Arriving pink, then blue, green, purple, and red, these robes turn gold if their wearer achieves top marks in their subjects. If a student performs Dark Magic, or violates the school Code of Conduct, however, their robes turn white. This is the height of dishonor for a Mahoutokoro student and is grounds for immediate expulsion, where the student’s wand is snapped.
CLASS STRUCTURE
The students of Mahoutokoro are no strangers to hard work. Their school’s grading system is collective, but competitive. Every student is ranked academically according to year. Diligence, successful spellwork, and test scores can boost or drop a student’s standing, and those who acheive highest rank are immortalized forever within the white walls of the castle. Behind the scenes, a similar ranking of students’ reputations has a lively following that calculates each student’s popularity. The comprehensive list offers an unofficial view into the social politics of the school.

       THE DURMSTRANG INSTITUTE
THE BASICS
Location: Scandinavia Student Body: Roughly 2,000 students Student Ages: 11 years through 18 years Magical Specialties: Martial Magic, Family Magic
A BRIEF HISTORY
Durmstrang, located in Scandinavia, was founded during the Middle Ages by Great Bulgarian witch, Nerida Vulchanova. For centuries, the school was known for its reputation for its advocation in blood supremacy and the Dark Arts. However, under new administration, the school’s policies have changed to a more inclusive education. Though the Dark Arts are no longer within the ciriculum, the school still is home to the most adept of martial magic.
The school of Durmstrang looks to breed a certain type of student-- Strong, skilled, and cooperative. The students are propagated ideologies of unity and structure from the moment the enter through the doors. Each student shares a dorm with three others and they are expected to cultivate a strong relationship with one another. Even outside their dorm mates, Durmstrang fosters deep-rooted ties between their students, usually lasting well-beyond their school years.
For recreational purposes, students must join at least two clubs each year. With the school hosting six teams for students to join, Quidditch culture remains a strong identity of a Durmstrang student. Annually, at the end of the game season, students hold a large celebration at the school’s natural hot springs, which is also a popular spot given the icy terrain.
The dress code at Durmstrang is incredibly strict. Weekdays, students are expected to wear blood-red robes lined with woolly fur whether they are in classes or not. Weekends, they have their own choice of plain dark clothes. If a student does not follow policy, they are punished quite thoroughly.
CLASS STRUCTURE
In accordance with their beliefs of solidarity, Durmstrang sets near-identical schedules for their students. Each of them are accountable for the other and helping one another is necessary in moving forward with their lessons. Testing is done in a unique way-- There are two parts to it: The first includes a written test for individuals. The second is a field test, where students are split into groups of three or four and must pass an obstacle course designed by the administration, which will test both their magical abilities as well as their teamwork.

        UAGADOU SCHOOL OF MAGIC
THE BASICS
Location: Main Campus located at the base of the  Mountains of the Moon, Uganda Student Body: Around 5,000 Students and Acolytes annually Student Ages: 12 years through 25+ years Magical Specialties: Wandless Magic, Self-Transfiguration, Traditional Magic
A BRIEF HISTORY
Uagadou is timeless, at least as far as foundation stories go. Wizards in Africa have always offered council to the next generation of wizards to follow. The Dream Messengers who bear the coins that take Uagadou students back and forth from the school have tales dating back far further than the school itself has written record. Instead of dwelling on the ever-present past, Uagadou prefers to look on the future. The school itself is a hotbed of activity, with so many students that there is never a dull moment. Portkeys are located throughout the grounds to take students to what have been cheerfully dubbed ‘satellite campuses’. These are located in every African country, offering hands-on lessons in Astronomy in South Africa’s Vredefort crater, or magizoology lectures in the dense Madagascar forest. Students at Uagadou are from backgrounds as varied and diverse as the continent of Africa can provide and there is no inclination to stifle such individuality. Uagadou has no dress code, each student wearing whatever feels appropriate to their lessons. Since students also return home each weekend, there is not all that much reason to require anything from them beyond attendance, and that they keep the coin they use to travel between home and Uagadou carefully guarded, lest a Muggle end up stumbling onto the magical school.
CLASS STRUCTURE
The magical folk at Uagadou learn very early on that there is no specific age of a student-- learning is a lifelong endeavour. There are basic understandings that each Uagadou student must demonstrate before they are permitted to pursue their own specialty in magic, which normally include spellcasting, fortune-telling, and potion-brewing before taking the final steps towards discovering their Animagus form. Once a student decides to graduate beyond Uagadou’s curriculum, they can choose to relinquish their coin in favor of a tattoo of the school’s sun and circle crest.

        THE SALEM INSTITUTE OF WITCHCRAFT
THE BASICS
Location: Salem, Oregon Student Body: Roughly a population of 3,500 for the entire student body of the previous 2016 school year.  Student Ages: 12 years through 19 years Magical Specialties: Naturalism, Divination, Magical Creatures
A BRIEF HISTORY
Founded in the beginning of the 20th century, Salem is the most recent established wizarding school. An institution built during a time of modern expansion, the school was made to keep up with the times.  Even now, technology is no stranger to the walls within-- Students can be found with laptops on their desks and cell phones in their hands. Of course, to abide to the discrepancies of magic folk and No-Majs, the Salem IT team has placed the proper enchantments to make sure magic remains hidden.
Prospecting magical children in America were monitored and, once a promising witch or wizard, were welcomed to either Salem or Ilvermorny. Reasons vary for choosing whichever school, however, the average Salem student comes from Western America due to its closer proximity. The school offers boarding, which a majority take up (although, there are a few Oregon natives who simply commute to school). Dorm rooms house two or three students per room and each semester new roommates are assigned (Requested roommates are taken into consideration). It is optional to house during Winter Break, though many students choose to return home for the holidays.
Being a large school, the social scene is high at Salem. Students have a plethora of activities to do at the school. Movies nights are held in the auditorium on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Clubs are always hosting different events for students to partake in. The forests are free to roam and hike before curfew. With a beach not far from the school, students sometimes trek there when the sun comes out. There are even bonfires on rare nights monitored by volunteering faculty. On weekends, many students often take the trip to the nearby town for whatever needs they have, whether it be for entertainment, or just to shop. The school offers a lot of freedom in terms of leisure hours.
For a school with a reputation for modernism and self-expression, it would seem redundant to require students to wear the traditional robes, or even uniforms at all. It is for that reason that there is absolutely no dress code at Salem. So long as students are not nude, they are free to dress in however manner they choose. It would not be odd to see a student in sweats, pajamas, or even barefoot.
CLASS STRUCTURE
A fairly large school, Salem most resembles something of a state college.  The first three years of schooling is meant to get an all encompassing education of magic, and once students reach their fourth year, students test into their major, which can be one of the following: Abbot (History), Altheda (Potions), Circe (Wandwork), Flamel (Elementals), Scamander (Naturalism), Sybil (Divination). Transferring a major is permissible so long as a certain proficiency in the subject is demonstrated. Classes are typically thirty to forty students, but once they reach their forth year and a major is decided, classes can include lecture halls of up to 200 students. Testing if left to the discretion of the teachers, however, school wide exams takes place during the end of both semesters, which is during December and June.

                    CASTELOBRUXO
THE BASICS
Location: The Amazon Rainforest, Brazil Student Body: Between 1800 and 2000 students a year, starting with classes of around 30 students for the first three years, diverging into magical specialties where class sizes range from 5-10 to over 100 students Student Ages: 11 years through 22 years Magical Specialties: Natural Magic, Herbology and Magizoology, Martial Magic
A BRIEF HISTORY
For nearly eight centuries, Castelobruxo’s campus has existed. Long before it had a name, it was a city, a home to those who had come to understand the rainforest in a way that could not be put in words. Magic in the Amazon was as commonplace as the brightly-colored birds that lived among its treetops, as abundant as the ants marching steadily through their colonies.  Caipora lived in abundance throughout the city. Native to the Amazon, these small sprites came out at night to cause mischief as well as protect the city itself and the plants and animals that call it home. The caipora, for reasons unknown, draw people to the magical city whether they themselves were magical or not. More and more commonfolk found themselves in the city thanks to the Caipora as the Portuguese landed in Brazil and began to colonize. The citizens in the rainforest had taken precautions to protect themselves– non-magical people saw only ruins of a city that might have been. But those who were able to see the city for what it was were taken in by those with magical abilities and taught them all they knew. The campus that sprawls from the forest floor high into the treetops earned the apt, if not original name ‘Castelobruxo’- Wizard Castle in Portuguese. The willingness to share knowledge led to the eventual assimilation of nearly all Latin and South American wix and the institution of Castelobruxo as a school eventually came to be widely known.  Castelobruxo as an institution has always boasted students with widely varying backgrounds. The school’s sprawling grounds have always been more than accommodating for as many students as it must, and any outbuildings that are added will always be used for one purpose or another, even if it is just to store spare uniforms until they are needed. Campus has become so large over the centuries that the waterfalls that dot the campus have been bewitched to act as portals between certain spots– there is nothing is quite so convenient or refreshing as taking a step into the cool mist and emerging much closer to where you needed to be, almost five kilometers away. This uniform consists of bright green robes in addition to uniforms heavily influenced by the ‘gaucho’ culture of southern Brazil and the ‘vaquiero’ culture of northern Brazil. Students wear wide-brimmed hats and loose, neutral-colored clothing beneath their robes, diverging only from this pattern on Carnival, when vivid colors, sequins, and feathers become all the rage. Students do not often use wands, though personal preference and popularity means that there are more than a handful of wand-carriers on campus. Many students, especially those who seek continued education in General Spellwork or Naturalism typically have an Animagus form.
CLASS STRUCTURE
When students begin their education at Castelobruxo, their classes are nearly overflowing with students. The first three years of a Castelobruxo education consist of a basic overview of the six subjects taught: Naturalism, Potions, History, Mysticism, Defensive Spellwork, and General Spellwork. The next several years are spent perfecting their craft, in that whatever magical talents a student discovers are improved upon. The focus of Castelobruxo’s education system is to help mold each student into their own best image. At the end of every school year, Castelobruxo holds open examinations where students demonstrate their skills and, if they are deemed proficient, move on to more difficult courses in the subject. Students are invited to learn at their own pace, and choosing to refrain from examinations is a choice that is never met with a negative connotation.

                             BEAUXBATONS ACADEMY OF MAGIC
THE BASICS
Location: The Pyrenees Mountains, France Student Body: Between 1200 and 1500 students with approximately 70 to 100 students in standard grades, though there are multiple classes in each grade which number around 25 students Student Ages: 7 years through 19 years Magical Specialties: Charms, Magical Control, Precise Wandwork
A BRIEF HISTORY
Originally a seasonal estate of Marchioness Louise-Augustine de Montmorency- a veela who had married into muggle nobility, the Marchioness opened Beauxbatons to those fleeing the guillotine following the French revolution. She and her family hid muggle and pureblood alike until the end of the Revolution and the Terror. When there was no more use for the building as a sanctuary, it was converted to a school. The Marchioness spent a veritable fortune recruiting expert professors from all over France to teach, and appointed herself as Headmistress. The French school is unique in that it is the only institution that begins to teach its students before they are able to perform magic. Students are recruited when they begin to display signs of magic, as young as seven years old. Students are taught French History, Etiquette, Wand Safety, and how to control their magical abilities long before they ever learn a spell or hold a wand in their hand. Standard classes normally begin around age eleven. Student relationships are normally quite close, as classmates are practically raised together nine months out of the year. Beauxbatons prides itself not only on it's extensive schooling, but on it's welcoming attitude towards those with mixed heritage. The school is made up of almost 50% muggleborns, and those with veela and giant heritage are commonplace. Though several traditional pureblood families and even the French Ministry of Magic have tried to change this over the years, the descendants of the the Marchioness (many of whom still work at the school or number among the Board of Governors) have always raised fierce protests, backed by an extensive fortune and most of the school's staff and students. "My grandmother started this school as a refuge for those the country had shunned," Former Headmistress Charlotte de Montmorency is noted to have said during one such upheaval. "I would rather close the school forever than see one magical child turned away because of something as immaterial as blood status." The school holds several seemingly frivolous traditions near to their heart, many of which were started in the time of the Marchioness. Most are known only to Beauxbaton students themselves, though some are more widely known. While Beauxbaton has no official uniform, students are expected to be well dressed, and it is traditional to dress in the colors of the school, pale blue, white, and gold.
CLASS STRUCTURE
The large amount of students at the school demands an equally large staff. The sprawling estate requires dozens of housekeepers, cooks, and gardeners, and there are over one hundred professeurs and sous-professeur employed at Beaubaxton, all exemplary in their fields. Classes from ages six to eleven tend to be smaller, taught by the same handful of teachers every year until they receive their wands and move on. Those classes that follow tend to be resemble college lectures, and may contain as many as 100 students, depending on the subject. Should students find themselves struggling, sous-professeurs have extensive office hour for individual education and advice, and may be assigned a tutor from a higher grade. (Several hours of tutoring are required from each student in order to graduate, as it is considered a service to the school.) Each grade is also assigned a Sponsor de Classe, who acts as something of a confidant and advisor for that group of students from the time they come to Beauxbaton until they graduate. Students are required to demonstrate practical applications of what they have learned weekly to their professeurs, and testing is done three times a year- a month into classes to see what the students have retained over the summer, before Winter Break, and at the end of the year. OWLs are done during a student's sixth year. Students are expected to be able to perform a noverbal, wandless Avis charm by the time they graduate.

         KOLDOVSTORETZ
THE BASICS
Location: The Dancing Forest, Russia Student Body: Between 100 and 200 students Student Ages: 11 years through 20 years Magical Specialties: Archaic Magic, Wandless Magic, Divination
A BRIEF HISTORY
To this day, the history of Koldovstoretz largely remains a mystery. Its Germanic fairy tale impression often confuses wizard folk, even more so, when the large interior deeply ingrains the architecture of Imperial Russia. Only a select elite are allowed into the castle through a process in which each individual student is divined by a group of Seers.
The mystery, however, does not end with the school. The students of Koldovstoretz are generally just as perplexing-- Most notably, because student relationship is practically non-existent. Each student is given their own room and are taught to value increasing their own independent education rather than make friends. Free time is rare to catch with such a rigid schedule and not much can be awarded to Koldovstoretz’s extracurricular, which only hold two Quidditch teams for just a few students to join.
In tradition with their origins, the uniforms of Koldovstoretz has similar qualities to earlier Russian royalty with their olden style of shirts and dresses, both embellished with gold embroidery. Along with this, each student is given a large, ostentatious ring, during the welcoming ceremony with each stone representing what class they are-- Onyx (first year), Garnet (second), Topaz (third), Emerald (forth), Ruby (fifth), Lapis Lazuli (sixth), Alexandrite (seventh), Amethyst (eight), and Moonstone (alumni). The rings fall in the same style, a clear indication of a Koldovstoretz student. The obvious royal quality given to the students was decided to display the prominent status of the special Koldovstoretz pupils, however, the Durmstrang students often find amusement with their seemingly pretentious neighbor school.
CLASS STRUCTURE
With such a small population, the students of Koldovstoretz receive a very personalized education. While they do learn in classes with the students of their grade, grades can be as small as ten students. Outside of normal classes, every student has individual time with a professor to hone their own special abilities. Testing is done twice a year-- Once before the Winter Break and another at the end of the year. It consists of each student performing age-level magic along with some in their own expertise in front of a panel of Koldovstoretz faculty.

ILVERMORNY SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT & WIZARDRY
THE BASICS
Location: Mt Greylock, Massachusetts , USA Student Body: Between 800 and 1,000 students a year divided into four houses: Puckwudgie, Thunderbird, Wampus Cat, & Horned Serpent Student Ages: 11 years through 17 years Magical Specialties: Historic Preservation, Spell Development
A BRIEF HISTORY
The origin story of Ilvermorny is a murky one. The ever-expanding castle in the mountains bears an Irish founder with distant relation to one of the founders of Hogwarts. This blood tie is the explanation for the school's obvious parallels to Hogwarts, though it does owe its flourishing in the seventeenth century to an influx of Native American wizards.  Even today, the alumni of the Massachusetts magical school are just as likely to hold a sense of pride for traditions pulled from across the pond as they are to be derisive of the blatant repetition of the four houses amid one castle. Puckwudgies live in and about the castle, serving and protecting its occupants tirelessly. They have done so for centuries, lending credibility to the lore of Ilvermorny’s creation. The Puckwudgies maintain the campus with ship shape mentality that seems popular amongst their kind. As a modern pinnacle of American Magical education, students are allowed to use their wands while on campus, although they do leave these wands in the school’s care every holiday or day off.  With a No-Maj as one of the founding members of this school, Ilvermorny fearlessly championed students without magical inheritance long before even schools like Hogwarts warmed to the idea. Students are allowed off campus one weekend a month, pouring into the nearby No-Maj towns and appearing to those who don’t know better as snobbish rich kids from the local exclusive boarding school. As robes fall out of style with American wizards, the school has adopted a more mundane uniform that mirrors the clothes worn in north-eastern No-Maj schools.
CLASS STRUCTURE
True to its location, Ilvermorny’s teaching methods are very much at home on the East Coast. Students are divided into seven years, and each year is required to attend several classes throughout each week. These classes consist of a variety of lectures and hands-on practice that enable each student to pass a standardized test at the end of each year. One unusual attribute of Ilvermorny’s class roster, however, is the inclusion of a ‘Classics’ curriculum, a class that is designed to familiarize students with Greek and Roman antiquity. This can be traced back to No-Maj founder James Steward, and the emphasis Ilvermorny places on magical and non-magical integration.
