That line of thinking led local author Edith Hazard Birney to write her latest work of creative nonfiction.Birney’s recent publication, titled “An Anonymous Gift: Who was Rowland H?” is about her grandfather’s life, much of which was a closely held secret in her family’s household. She hopes readers walk away with a sense of hope for people who are struggling with addiction.Local author Edith Birney published her third book this year called “An Anonymous Gift: Who was Rowland H?” Courtesy of Robert Mitchel.“No one asked any questions about [Rowland], and we got along perfectly, but that led me to think this is ridiculous, and I would like to know more,” Birney said.Rowland Hazard came from significant wealth and was part of an old family line dating back to the early 1800s. The Hazards primarily made their money in Rhode Island and eventually expanded to have a lead mine in Missouri, along with Solvay Process Company, which became Allied Chemical. Most of the book’s action takes place between the 1920s and 1940s.One reason Rowland was a family secret was that he struggled with alcoholism. He became a patient of Dr. Carl Jung, who told Rowland he was hopeless and the only way to beat his alcoholism was to have a conversion experience, a methodology used by the Oxford Group in London, run by Frank Buchman.“When you face the horror of addiction, it seems pretty hopeless,” Birney said.Rowland returned to the United States and hosted different Oxford Group members in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Someone in the town of Shaftsbury, Ebby Thatcher, who Rowland knew, was about to go to jail for being publicly drunk and disorderly for the third time. Rowland stepped in to take the person into his care and was able to set Thatcher straight, who had connections with Bill Wilson, the head of Alcoholics Anonymous.Later, Thatcher connected with Wilson in New York and told him about the methods the Oxford Group used, which led to Wilson getting involved with the Oxford Group to learn about the conversion experience.Rowland brought the methodology from the Oxford Group to Wilson, who modified the methods and directed it toward addiction. Birney began writing “An Anonymous Gift” 25 years ago and felt it was an important story to share. Birney said it took a lot of work and research to write the book while raising four kids.She researched the book by reading Rowland’s letters kept at Yale in the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library and went to La Luz, New Mexico, to a ranch the Hazards used to own to interview around eight to 10 people who knew Rowland.“Most of them were hired hands that worked on the ranch and so they remember him in different ways,” Birney said.Birney began writing in 1990, and her first two books were “Rising to the Occasion,” published in 1993, and “Singing for Your Supper,” published two years later. Birney talked with her two brothers during the writing process, Charlie Bruce Hazard and Rowland Hazard, and after they read the book, they said to Birney they wished their father had been able to read it.Birney has other projects in the works but is focused on selling “Anonymous Gift” for now, which Birney says is the hardest part. The new historical creative nonfiction book was published in January and is available in the Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick and Sherman’s in Freeport. How do you do that?” asked Local 10′s Jeff Weinsier.“I’m a fool Jeff,” replied Sue. “It sounded so good. They made everything sound so nice.”After years of searching, Sue found his dream vehicle online, at Dream Auto Collection on Pembroke Road in Hollywood.It’s a 2023 Mercedes Benz G63 with the extremely rare Brabus package.Now Sue says it was the biggest mistake of his life.“Seriously Jeff, I thought about killing myself,” he said. “I’ll say that right out, I was stupid and foolish.”Sue lives 4770 miles away in Hawaii. When he saw the pictures online, at 78 years old, he decided this was it.“A G class is ultimate off-road Mercedes, and that is what I wanted,” said Sue. “So I called them up and they immediately answered the phone. I spoke to someone named Victor who told me he was the owner of the company.”This bill of sale is stamped and signed by someone at Dream Auto Collection with an agreed price of $275,000.In an e-mail, Victor gave Sue a routing number and bank information.According to bank records provided by Sue, $275,000 dollars was wired to Dream Auto back on April 12 out of two different banks.“He had acknowledged he had received both of the wires and he would be shipping the car to me,” said Sue.But the G Wagon never made it to the port in San Diego to be shipped to Hawaii.“At that point I’m getting worried because we missed two shipping deadlines,” he said. “I’ve tried to call them, I’ve tried to email them, I’ve tried to text them, and they are nonresponsive.”Weinsier went to Dream Auto to try and get some answers.He found Oleg Tyulenev. State records show he is the President of Dream Auto.“No I’m sorry, I’m not going to talk to you,” Tyulenev said.“Why not?” asked Weinsier, showing photos of the G Wagon. “Where is this car?”“That’s it, end of story,” Tyulenev replied.“It’s not the end of the story, it’s the beginning of the story,” Weinsier said. “The guy is suicidal. This happened back in April. He hasn’t heard from you guys.”Last year, Weinsier was at Dream Auto after a Georgia couple sent them over $15,000 for a used Lexus that they never received.That car was sold to someone else, and the couple’s refund requests were ignored until Local 10 News got involved.“We have been here before,” Weinsier said to Tyulenev. “You all did this to the people in Georgia? In the missive, they asked Merchan to postpone the former president’s sentencing on July 11 while he considers whether the recent high court ruling impacts Trump’s conviction.The former president was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up allegations of a sexual encounter with the porn star Stormy Daniels in May. The Supreme Court ruled Monday, however, that as president, Trump enjoyed wide immunity for any presidential act that was “official” in nature.The gambit by Trump’s attorneys may be far-fetched as the ruling only protects a president’s actions while in office, not while they are a candidate, like when those acts central to the hush money trial took place. The Times notes it may also be too late for Merchan to revisit the conviction as a deadline to file post-trial motions has already passed. The judge could inform Trump’s lawyers to air their concerns when they file an eventual appeal. Still, the former president will likely argue that prosecutors relied on some evidence from Trump’s time in the White House, which would be barred under the Supreme Court decision.The letter will not be made public until Tuesday at the earliest. During that same time, there has also been a dramatic increase in use of downloadable content, namely e-books, e-audio, and e-video.Demand for library content has not declined so much as has been thwarted. Library users want more online content, but libraries are unable to meet demand.Unlike physical books, libraries cannot purchase a digital title, they can only lease it. Leasing is expensive and e-books have to be leased again if they are borrowed over 26 times. With our membership in the Connecticut Library Consortium (CLC), we receive a 46% discount on print copies (costing the library roughly $14). But purchasing the same title in an e-book format costs us somewhere from $65 to $109.A good example is Michael Connelly’s latest book, Resurrection Walk. Right now, at the Ferguson Library, there is one hold on our 14 print copies, but the online version has 22 holds.Since libraries began circulating e-books in the early 2000s, they have faced a variety of barriers. At first some publishers refused to offer e-titles to libraries or if they did sell them, the prices varied, as did the terms of use. Over the years, a model developed where bestsellers were available at a much higher price than the print version and with a limited use (26 borrows). Librarians have protested this inequity, but publishers ignored us. With the cost so prohibitively expensive, many libraries are not able to meet community demand.Like many publicly funded entities, we try to purchase wisely and make tough decisions. Whenever possible, we purchase on state contract. And as a member of the Connecticut Library Consortium, the Ferguson enjoys substantial discounts on databases, books, furniture, etc.While book vendors do submit to a bid process, e-book vendors do not. The publishers have set the rules of engagement.Sticking with Resurrection Walk, if you want to buy the e-book, it is only $13.80 on Amazon — much less than what a library pays. This cost differential has a major impact on not only the digital divide but the knowledge divide. Libraries in wealthy communities are able to purchase more digital copies than libraries in less affluent communities. Those with wealth can bypass the library system altogether and purchase a print or digital copy.In a progressive state that understands the power of knowledge, this status quo is a call for action.For the past two years, State Sen. Tony Hwang has proposed legislation that would require publishers to adhere to certain contract terms. Last year, Rep. Eleni Kavros DeGraw and Rep. Matt Blumenthal also championed an e-book bill. The resulting bill is a good one that is grounded in Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices law (Chapter735a, Section 42-110b) and would ensure that contractual agreements between libraries and publishers contain equitable licensing terms for the acquisition of e-books, among other protections.We hope to see eBook legislation introduced in the next session.Alice S.
