Sam: I don't know, maybe company would be helpful. Singing probably wouldn't help.
Rachel: I find that difficult to believe, but if you say so. I'll be over soon.

Sam: I don't know what to do. I'm totally heartbroken here.
Rachel: I don't really know what to tell you. Nobody but angels can get into heaven, and there's no way of knowing when, or even if, she'll be back.
Rachel: I'm sorry. I can't really emphasize, but I can be here, I suppose. If you need someone to listen.

i need everything this life can give me || Samchelcedes
TAGGING → Rachel Berry, Mercedes Jones, & Sam Evans
LOCATION → Cafe across the street from Coppersmith
TIME FRAME → Saturday Night
Sam had been nervous all day about what was gonna happen. He kept his fingering the small rosary Mercedes had given him that he kept in his pocket in case a useful vision came to him. So far, nothing. When it was a quarter till 6, he walked outside of the boys dorm to wait for Mercedes. A big part of him hated lying to her, but something told him he needed to give Rachel a chance to turn herself around. Not only for her sake, but for the sake of those around her. He saw Mercedes walking toward him and smiled brightly. 'Hey beautiful." He called with a wave.
Mercedes Jones
Mercedes took the last two flights of stairs leading to the lobby, two steps at a time. Sam had been gone most of the week right after school and two weekends to help his family relocate into their new home. Shaking her head at the blond's penchant for coffee, she giggled. It didn't matter why he wanted to see her, Mercedes was just happy that he did. Turning the corner, she spotted the tow-headed blond and returned his wave with a smile. "I'm so glad you're back." she said in greeting as she approached and wrapped her arms around his waist for a hug. "Isn't all this coffee going to keep you up tonight or are you recharging?" she asked, slipping her arm through his.
Rachel Berry
Rachel sat in at a table in the corner of the cafe, nervously shaking her leg. It had been over a month since she had been in New York, or even in America, for that matter, and while she was eager to come home, the mere thought of being in the presence of an angel made her anxious. Sam had assured her that Mercedes wouldn't try anything with him around, but she still had a difficult time believing that, considering she was almost killed in the middle of this very cafe last time she'd been here. Rachel saw the pair approach and enter the shop, and she made to catch Sam's eye to get him to come over.
Sam Evans
Sam put his arm around Mercedes shoulder and desperately whispered in her ear. "Please don't do anything yet, okay? I invited her. Please please don't be mad at me. She wants to make up for what she did, and wants to change.. I promise." He studied Mercedes and Rachel for any sign of something going wrong. "Please trust me, and hear her out..." He pleaded.
Mercedes Jones
As they walked in to the cafe, the face of a familiar brunette caught Mercedes' eye. Making to excuse herself, the girl was shocked when Sam's around wound its way around her shoulders before she could get away and the boy began whispering in her ear. "You set me up!?" she asked between gritted teeth. Mercedes was stronger than Sam and knew she could break his hold and get to Rachel before he could stop her but part of her was curious as to why Sam would try to broker a deal between a demon and a angel. "Demons can't change and I don't make deals with demons, Sam!" she spat, shrugging his arm off her shoulder.
Sam Evans
Sam took Mercedes hand before she could pull away from him too far. "Look at me, please..Please?" Sam pleaded, trying to turn her to face him. "How do you know she can't change? How?" He asked. "Besides, she might be able to give us or um...you some intel into whats going on in the demon world, that would help you catch some of the really really bad demons out there, maybe the one who was doing all these killings..." He offered. "She took a huge risk coming here, she knows you can kill her on the spot...doesn't that deserve at least a shot at hearing her out?" he asked.
Mercedes Jones
The fact that Sam used the word "us" didn't escape Mercedes' attention as she jerked her hand away. "This is not your fight Sam and you are going to get yourself killed if you insist on interfering!" she snapped. A small part of her knew what he was asking was right. Mercedes didn't know if demons could change, Rachel was the first one she had encountered on Earth but from her teachings in Heaven, it didn't matter. The demons had to die. Looking around the crowded cafe, Mercedes knew she would have to make this quick. "Don't you dare follow me!' she retorted over her shoulder in Sam's direction. It would just take a touch, that's all. Determined, Mercedes approached Rachel's table and crossed her arms. "Tell me one good reason why I shouldn't just kill you now." she demanded.
Rachel Berry
Rachel scowled as she eavesdropped on the conversation a ways away from her--a perk of being non-human. From the beginning she was no fan of this plan, and she was liking it less and less as it progressed. She knew there was no way Mercedes would agree to just letting her return and walk free. It was in her nature as much as it was in Rachel's to kill--no matter how hard she repressed it, it was still there. Her eyes widened as Mercedes marched over to her table, ordering Sam to stay behind. She prepared herself to teleport out of there if necessary. She had been practicing while she had been gone because really, what else did she have to do? Rachel blinked in surprise at Mercedes' question before her features settled into a sneer. "As if you'd ever believe what I have to say," she bit out, before sighing and staring at the angel thoughtfully. "Because I can be a good person if someone gives me a chance," she said truthfully, sincerely. The chances of the angel believing anything she said was slim to none, and yet there was nothing to lose in admitting to it anyway. She was here, she might as well tell the truth. "I can't help what I am, that's true, but I don't want to be this way. And I've done bad things in the past, and I regret them, and maybe that doesn't make up for them, but all I've ever wanted was to leave that behind and try to live some semblance of a normal human life. All I need is for someone to give me the chance to prove that I can do that."
Sam Evans
Sam looked on from a few feet away ready to jump in if necessary. Although he knew that would be a stupid move. He wasn't sure why he he was sticking his neck out for Rachel, he just knew he needed too. As if he knew she had some important part to play in something down the line, that they would need her help. It wasn't a vision, but just a feeling. He sat down on a bar stool a few feet away from them, still watching intently.
Mercedes Jones
Mercedes felt more than sensed Sam had followed her. Unfolding her arms, she jerked the chair across from Rachel from underneath the table and sat down angrily, watching the girl intently as she spoke. Mercedes admitted to herself that in spite of Rachel being a demon, it was also said that if forgiveness was asked it was always granted. Unwilling to concede, she folded her arms once more across her chest and sat back in the seat. "Is that how you put Sam up to this?" she asked. Mercedes was unsure if Rachel meant what she said but she knew Sam wouldn't have done this on his own. Taking a cue from what she knew of demons, the girl leaned forward with an almost bitter smile. "IF, I do this for you, what exactly is it in for me? You walk free but what do I get?" Everything in her was screaming this was wrong and Mercedes knew if she didn't get a good answer, the time for talk was over.
Rachel Berry
Rachel raised an eyebrow as Mercedes sat down across from her, and looked over warily to wear Sam was sitting. The other girl may not have attempted to kill her yet, but she still didn't feel comfortable having her directly in front of her, cutting off a means of escape and the only person who maybe somehow stood an inkling of a chance of saving her life. "I didn't put Sam up to anything," she answered. "He was the one to contact about this meeting. Although he thought he could threaten me to do it," she added with a sarcastic smile. She still couldn't believe he thought he could threaten her, because he had nothing over her that could possibly frighten her anymore than the actual threats New York already posed. Rachel sighed, leaning back in her own chair. Of course there had to be something in it for her. "What could I possibly offer you that you can't already get for yourself?" she asked, actually curious to hear what Mercedes could possibly propose.
Sam Evans
Sam couldn't help listening and had an idea. "Information, that's what you can give her Rachel. She need information on what demons are around and what they are up too..." Sam offered. "Maybe you could help her out that way." Sam looked from Rachel searching for an indication that there might be some agreement.
Mercedes Jones
Mercedes quirked an eyebrow at Sam's interjection and turned to stare at him. The boy blushed furiously and managed to look guilty at the same time. "Not helping." she muttered before turning her attention back to Rachel. "He's right though. I want information, among other things." The angel's mouth lifted in a side smile, she wasn't about to make this easy on the petite girl sitting across from her. Lifting her hands, Mercedes thought a moment before she began ticking items off. "Information is just the start. You have to be good and I mean very good" she stressed holding up a forefinger. "If you harm a hair on anyone's head or even look at them sideways, I will know about it." There was no need to inform Rachel that the minute she used her powers, Mercedes would smell it. That particular nugget was special to Mercedes as an angel, not every angel was as sensitive to sulfur as she was. "Number two, I'm going to stick so close to you that you may as well name your shadow Mercedes" the angel smiled smugly. No way the tiny girl was going to go for that. "And three.. You tell no one about me." Mercedes sat back once more in her seat, sure that Rachel wouldn't agree and the moment she didn't she was dead. Glancing at Sam out of the corner of her eye, she muttered, "You may want to take a walk Sam" No matter what part the blond had played, even though Mercedes was angry, there was no way she could kill Rachel in front of him.
Rachel Berry
Rachel quirked an eyebrow. While she didn't particularly like any of the conditions, they weren't entirely impossible to agree to. She had no desire to have an angel watching her every move, but she wanted to live her life. Be a teenager, hang out with friends, apply to NYADA and perform. That's all she wanted, and this was her chance. There was just one problem... "There is no demonic community," she answered cautiously. "We don't keep in contact and most of us travel alone. The only thing we have in common is what we are and how much we despise where we come from. It would be next to impossible trying to keep up on everyone." Rachel decided not to mention that she wouldn't snitch on her own kind anyway. She wasn't lying, there was no community for demons, but if there were she wouldn't do it anyway. She scowled at the second condition. "What don't you understand about I don't want to hurt people?" she snarled under her breath. There was no comment in response to the third. There was nothing about this she liked, but the decision was in the other girl's hands now, and if she didn't like it, Rachel would be out of there in the blink of an eye.
Mercedes Jones
Mercedes was careful to keep her emotions in check. Outwardly, her face was the perfect vision of serenity in spite of the shock she felt at Rachel's answer. The angel would have sworn the girl would say no to any and all conditions while trying to squirm out of harm's way. Mercedes' demeanor fell slightly as her brow wrinkled in thought, wondering if it was possible that Rachel did want to be good. Keeping an eye on the tiny brunette, Mercedes tuned everything else out and sat quietly in judgement. The words felt sincere, so at the very least the angel knew the girl at least believed some of the words that were coming out of her mouth, but in Mercedes' world, words were just that. Words. "I don't believe there aren't any more of your kind around and you would be smart not to fall in with them." she said softly, returning Rachel's scowl with one of her own. The angel felt backed into a corner and didn't like it one bit. "Fine, we have an arrangement. For now. The moment you slip up, you're dead." Mercedes rose to her feet and glanced around the room, silently snatching her presence from the minds of the cafe's patrons until her eyes came to rest on Sam and she raised an eyebrow in his direction. "I'll deal with you later." she said firmly before disappearing.
Rachel Berry
Biting her lip, Rachel nodded sharply at Mercedes' words. She knew, of course, that there were other demons around. But Santana, Sebastian, and Noah were as committed to keep the secret as she was. As for anyone else, she had no clue. But there was no reason to put the other's in harms way when they wouldn't do anything. "You won't have to worry about that," she agreed, speaking both about seeking out other demons and slipping up. Rachel hardly flinched as Mercedes disappeared right in front of them. Turing to Sam, Rachel gouged his reaction before letting out the breath she was holding. "Thank you," she said, quite sincerely.
Sam Evans
Sam looked guiltily at the spot Mercedes disappeared from. He really felt bad about the situation he put Mercedes in. But he wanted to give Rachel a chance. “You're welcome,” he said quietly, as he met Rachel's eyes. He moved to the table she was sitting at. “I hope you know how much I'm putting on the line here, how much Mercedes is putting on the line for you.” He said raising an eyebrow. “You owe us, I'm not sure how or when, but if we need to call on you…” his voice trailed off.
Rachel Berry
Rachel rolled her eyes at the statement. Neither of them could be risking more than she was at the moment. "And I have my life on the line," she snapped back. "I hope you can understand that. And I already agreed to your outrageous demands, I don't owe you much else, nor can I deliver if your girlfriend is threatening to kill me." Her eyes softened for a moment. "I appreciate you helping me come home, but don't try to capitalize on this agreement."
Sam Evans
Sam stared at her. "Your life is on the line because you screwed up, had that never happened, I wouldn't know anything about you being...who you are..." He said delicately. "Look, I'm not trying to capitalize on anything. I just have a feeling that someday something is gonna come up and we're gonna need your help. But I helped you because I think everyone deserves a chance, not because you'd owe me."
Rachel Berry
She had to exhale heavily to keep from screaming. She was so tired of her mistakes being thrown in her face and held over her head to justify their actions. "Yes I made a mistake. I acknowledge that. I know that it's the worst mistake that I could possibly make, but you'd be doing the same thing that I did if you killed me. How does that possibly make you better than me?" she threw at him. She hated what she was as much as they did, but that didn't mean she thought she should die because of it. Rachel looked up curiously at his words. "Need me? What for?" she scoffed. And then, quietly, "You think I deserve a chance? Knowing what I am?"
Sam Evans
Sam ran his hands through his hair. "I don't know what for, it's just a feeling I have," he explained. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "Some times I have direct visions, sometimes it's more of a gut feeling…” he explained. “I'm gonna trust you to keep this between us..” he added. “I don't need anyone knowing about my being a psychic.” Sam took a swig of the soda he'd bought at the counter while she was talking to Mercedes. “Yeah I do believe that, even knowing what you are…it's another gut feeling I have…”
Rachel Berry
At his words, Rachel merely stared, looking and searching for any hidden motives. He couldn't really mean what he was saying. It had been so long since anyone had believed in her that she was too jaded and wary to believe what Sam was currently saying. Sure, enough people believed in her voice, but that she was a good person, that deserved a second chance? No way. Finally, Rachel spoke. "You should probably find her and grovel. She seemed like she was pretty mad at you. I don't want to be the cause of any problems in your relationship," she added bitterly.
Sam Evans
Sam sighed. "Look I made the choice on my own, so whatever happens it's my own fault. But I probably should go try to talk to her." He admitted. "Just, I believe you can change if you want to. Just please, don't make me look like a fool for believing in you..." He asked. He took a last swig of his drink. "If it's all the same to you, I'm gonna head back to campus ok?"
Rachel Berry
Scowling, Rachel nodded. Even the people who supposedly believed in her didn't think she could be good long enough not to make them regret it. "Like I said, you need to grovel. Go find her, I'm fine on my own."

No, of course I haven't told anyone. What good would that do me? Obviously it will never happen, but that doesn't mean I can't try. Which means resisting every instinct I have no matter how difficult it is.

You’re welcome. Can I ask you a question? What is tech week and why are rehearsals gonna be till like 9 every night that week?

Around other people. No, because you somehow happened to figure out what I am. Actually I did say that, because I told you I wanted a chance to be a good person, which means living my life the way I want. What don't you get about I want to be human?

Well then you're doing a poor job of it. I suggest taking some acting classes to help you improve. I thought angels were supposed to have faith? Because if that's the case, you also need to work on that, seeing how little you have in me and that I'm not like others of my kind. No way. The deal was that I get to live my life how I want to live it, and you got to tag along and be my shadow. That second part was your stipulation, not mine, and if you don't like it, drop it or learn to deal with it because I certainly didn't sign up for a guard dog to not be able to live my life how I wish.

You know, you could at least pretend like you don't want to kill me. Just a few weeks ago we were friends and now you're acting like I'm scum on the bottom of your shoe. And no one is making you follow me anywhere, that's your own problem. I'll find out by letter, just like everyone else applying to college. Did you really just ask me if I pray?

They most certainly are! And next to Barbra, she's one of the best. Not only that, I think the song describes the situation and my life quite perfectly. Thank you, I appreciate the compliment!

Oh cool, I don’t know too many of her songs, but sounds like they’d be a good match for your voice. From what I can tell from play rehearsals anyway…

No, I don't, and that would entirely defeat the purpose of coming to my audition. And why would play rehearsals be going on? I'll be in the middle of my audition. You can't have an audition and a rehearsal going on at the same time.
