This photography piece conveys the empowerment of Arab women today. In order to portray this, I created a parody of the Rosie the Reviter poster which is a significant symbol of the empowerment of women in time. The colours black and red emphasise empowerment through the characteristics of strength and power. The woman in the image is wearing a flannel (checkered top). This is a very fashionable thing to wear today which shows that the image refers to the present. However, it also looks like a lumberjack shirt which represents masculinity. Although the purpose of this piece is not to show that women have let go their femininity and replacing it masculinity, masculinity is a stereotypical symbol of strength and power. Where in this case, it emphasises the Arab women today’s strength and power as they have overcome the stereotype of femininity being seen as a weakness. All of which shows the equality between male and female today. This does not only refer to Arab women however, although equality between men and women started to be visible around the world, Arab women still had to face the issues of this being “man’s world”. Some still live through the female stereotypes today .However, many have started to play an important role of empowering women by being representatives of their countries.

Name of Piece: عندما يلتقي الماضي بالحاضر (translates to: when the past meets the present)

This piece was created to show the idea of modernized culture in the Arabian society. The piece shows how although we are incluenced by other cultures, we still hold on to our own and don’t completely let it go. The coloured writing are words associated with modernization and how my culture has been influenced by it, especially thought fashion. The idea of the actual image being in grey scale is to emphasise the sense of history symbolizing tradition.

Paint on wood - The different letters form the word identity in Arabic.
This piece was structured in a random order, giving the viewers the opportunity to try and figure out which word this letter forms. This is symbolic of trying to understand my culture which strongly influences my identity. The Arabian culture in general is quite complicated. In order to properly understand the culture and traditions you must really get into it and be involved hence why I wanted to involve the viewers this way. Because culture plays an important role in forming a person’s identity, I chose to express that culture has a value within out identities through the colours gold and blue which are symbols of value.

Experimenting with water colour in this pop art themed piece. The completed image at the top is a painting of my grandmothers. In the second piece at the bottom, The two women at the top are my grandmothers whereas the woman in the middle is myself. My aim is to use warm colours on one of my grandmothers and cool colours on the other, whereas with myself, i will use both. The purpose of this is to emphasise how my grandmothers came from two completely different cultures however, both their cultures makeup what i consider as my culture.

I started practicing arabic calligraphy art to use it as a way to embrace my culture. I also chose to experiment with different mediums and colours. The colourful image in the middle is Arabic letters forming the word “(identity)” using acrylic and cardboard.
