I wanted to share a bed with you. Same. I'm sure we'll get to do it one day.

Reading/watching conversations with friends, you start believing this character is good and they are right only to see them doing something that isn’t exactly your idea of right and you find it hard to like this particular character. Its not one character but goes for all of them. And you are reminded of the truth that thats how humans are, all a mix of both good and bad, right and wrong and they often affect each other in a way that is beyond their control. We see how Frances places herself in relation to others and not really seeing the reality of others. We tend to view the world with us at center. We see relationships that we have with others and that others have with each other somehow connected to us as well. We often fail to see past ourselves. That others exist out of our immediate hold. Not just people but the situations too. Your words and actions can change their course but can never determine their directions because it also depends on how others perceive and react. We see the interconnectedness, how we are weaved together into a mess, one that isn’t always beautiful. We feel what we feel and make our decisions and hope that it will turn out right. Good and bad exist together in us, one outweighing the other in different situations. We choose to love another knowing the things we hate about them as well. But we will still choose to love them because in the end of the day they make us happy and also because we can’t really help it. Its not about changing another into something we like. Its about liking them for what they are. So we put ourselves out their and hope. We hope. But we can always try to be better, a little more bolder and love a little harder. We see the characters trying to break away from conventional ideas or forms of relationship, and being more open to experiences. Are we capable of having more than one romantic relationship? Establish the connection with more than one? Act on what Frances call as “spontaneous consent” ? We see how Frances reacting to Nick sleeping with Melissa. And how she feels about seeing Bobbi with another person. You often see the characters acting against their ideas or views. Our views often stand in the sidelines when we are in relationships. We see ourselves becoming people we thought we are not when we are high on emotions. And that is what the novel is trying to show us through its compound characters. Rooney captures the complexity of seemingly silly life. How we move through each day and how others also do the same. We see us in all our extremities and multitudinous but miss to see it in others. No other Rooney novel captured this feeling like conversations with friends.

Modern Love | “How Do You Remember Me?”
I don’t remember his last name. He was handsome, with a nice smile and startlingly blue eyes. The sex was good, I think. We didn’t know each other well. We never would.
