“It’s an anti, let me repeat that, anti-rape song,” - that presents rape as a crime of violence and power, not one of sexual desire - “It’s like she’s saying ‘Rape me, go ahead, rape me, beat me. You’ll never kill me. I’ll survive this.“ “Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there.” Kurt Cobain.

Once my mom came to me about a text convo going on between me and my best friend. We were talking about the boys we liked. It was nothing bad, I mean, yeah we said the "f" word a few times, but what freshman at the time hadn't.
I was on FaceTime w my crush as this was happening and he was talking to me about another girl he liked. It broke my heart. I told my friend, she comforted me and tried to cheer me up by, jokingly, saying "you should hook up w him at his party!" (He was hosting a graduation party the following week.) My mom read the messages and was not happy. She always says I can come to her about things, but she has lost my trust 100%.
I told my friends not to text anything weird anymore, because I found out my mom was going through my phone. They all stared at me until finally one of my friends said "why the hell do your parents do that?" I had to explain to them that I'm not giving them permission, and that my parents think it's helping me to do that. They do not understand what an invasion of privacy is.
I suffer from depression and anxiety. I have been for almost 3 years. But I haven't come forward yet. Because I can't talk to my parents. I can't do that when I know they don't trust me enough. I need to be able to talk to them, but how can I do that when they've violated my privacy.
"Should parents read their daughter's texts or monitor her online activity for bad language and inappropriate content?"
Earlier today, I served as the “young woman’s voice” in a panel of local experts at a Girl Scouts speaking event. One question for the panel was something to the effect of, “Should parents read their daughter’s texts or monitor her online activity for bad language and inappropriate content?”
I was surprised when the first panelist answered the question as if it were about cyberbullying. The adult audience nodded sagely as she spoke about the importance of protecting children online.
I reached for the microphone next. I said, “As far as reading your child’s texts or logging into their social media profiles, I would say 99.9% of the time, do not do that.”
Looks of total shock answered me. I actually saw heads jerk back in surprise. Even some of my fellow panelists blinked.
Everyone stared as I explained that going behind a child’s back in such a way severs the bond of trust with the parent. When I said, “This is the most effective way to ensure that your child never tells you anything,” it was like I’d delivered a revelation.
It’s easy to talk about the disconnect between the old and the young, but I don’t think I’d ever been so slapped in the face by the reality of it. It was clear that for most of the parents I spoke to, the idea of such actions as a violation had never occurred to them at all.
It alarms me how quickly adults forget that children are people.
