This is a good reminder that if you're in a "helping" position such as healthcare, no matter what you do there will be a power dynamic between you and the patients/clients. No matter how you are treated at your job, how much you get paid, etc, YOU are still the barrier to people receiving services and/or medical treatment.
I only speak as an outreach worker for my local nonprofit. I sit at a table in public and let people talk to me about our services/give them information. Sure I can still set small boundaries with people I talk to (being harassed about my gender identity, going on long religious rants nothing to do with the organization), but if someone is genuinely seeking my help, it doesn't matter what I'm feeling outside that moment. I am a barrier to their care and they deserve access to it regardless of any bias i may hold.
surely it's not just me who finds those fucking "be nice, I'm in charge of the pills" pins you sometimes see doctors and nurses wearing in pretty bad taste right? like the *point* is a stand against being mistreated by patients but like...yea you are in charge of the pills and can arbitrarily deny care to people, not really sure why that's something to gloat about? like the number of stories especially of black women being totally denied painkillers in hospital and stuff because the nurses were assholes it's like....maybe you can have your snarky pins when you're not in the position to medically torture someone? idk
like you get people rushing to defend it like "you don't know what it's like working in a hospital" but like...i do sure as hell know what it's like being mistreated by medical professionals. I'm not even getting paid to be here. it's kinda fucking evil when you think about it for more than a second.
#healthcare#and to clarify by 'setting small boundaries' i mean#saying things like 'are there any other questions about our services i can answer today?' if they get off topic#but tbh most of the time if people just want to rant about things i let them#some people have a lot of shit going on and just need someone to talk to#i really only try to stop it if they poke too much about my gender or try to get me to read the bible#and that means trying to get them back on topic not just like go away

And that was the problem right there. You see, I expected complexity. I expected intelligence. I expected a puzzle, a game. But that's not what any of this is. It hides not behind complexity, but behind mind-numbing, obvious clarity. Truth is, it doesn't hide at all. I was staring right at it.

Real flaw of the Barbie movie is that Ken gets bored of his job being beach. This is incorrect because beaches are incredibly versatile. You can do anything on the beach. You can eat on the beach, sleep on the beach, swim at the beach, read, write - anything you can imagine can be infinitely improved by going to the beach. Now if Ken's job was mountain, on the other hand, his boredom and existential malaise would be understandable, bc all you can do in the mountains is walk - and while walking is nice, it is only fun for a given amount of time. QED.
