I would like to come out and say that I think the cast says the ending of the show is bittersweet because a huge chapter of their life is over. And not like, cause the ending is super sad. I think every finale is bittersweet.

What if instead of Will being targeted by the angry church people they think he's the second coming of Christ? Because he died then came back to life.

Fanfic and more generally fandom and media has meant everything to me and has brought on HUGE positive change in my life.
For me the main takeaway is that ANYONE can write fan fiction and publish it to be read for free. Its accessible for readers and writers in two ways:
1) a writer can get into writing, expressing themselves, getting their message out into the world, and honing their craft with the bolster of having characters and/or worlds that they are already familiar with rather than starting from scratch. A reader can also focus on reading something they already know they'll like (like the characters or the world) and easily and accessibly discover not only new genres and stories - but also new ideas, perspectives, and lifestyles they may not get to experiences or learn about as much in traditional media because -
2) writing and publishing is a very gate kept career/passion. With traditional publishing, you run the risk of publishers not finding your work good enough to publish, or too scandalizing or not wanting to tell those kinds of stories. With self-publishing its a big personal investment of money and time personally trying to promote your book and possibly never getting a return on that investment - making it harder or impossible to sustainably keep trying to publish your own works. With fanfiction you can tell these stories very accessibly and with no one telling you what you can or cannot write about. And all of it is accessible to readers who can learn about radically different perspectives and stories that publishers aren't willing to print.
I've learned so much just by reading fanfiction - about judaism, black culture, queer culture, chronic illness, alternative lifestyles, what it's like to be homeless, what it's like to face abuse, and so much more. Now mind you I didn't get ALL my info from fanfiction, but fanfiction opened the door for me to go and gather information on my own.
Specifically for me, Wolfstar (Remus Lupin/Sirius Black) fanfics have made a HUGE impact on my life.
I would have never been interested in hockey if it weren't for Sweater Weather by @lumosinlove . But because I loved Wolfstar I read it and now I'm a hockey fan in real life.
I didn't know anything about cystic fibrosis until I read Text Talk by merlywhirls.
I have considered such interesting and complex perspectives on corrupt systems/governments and rebellion as well as a myriad of different sub-cultures by reading Marginalia by @spindrifters
But perhaps the best thing fanfiction has ever done was teach me about me.
When I was in the early years of high school - I was homophobic. I had a jamboree of events that led me to that point, but thats a story for a different time.
I was the type of person who would see people shipping a same-sex pairing in fandom and be like "ugh, why do people always have to make things gay?"
But then came Wolfstar.
The fanart I saw stopped me in my tracks - because I had never considered that before and it actually... made sense. Looking back at the books and their interactions... I was compelled.
And so I read my first fan fiction of them. And before I knew it, I was a full blown shipper.
Through those stories I learned about queer culture and different identities. I identified with it in ways I didn't quite understand. I grew much more accepting of gay ships and queer people and cultures all together.
One day I thought to myself "if I'm gonna be a good ally, maybe I should question my own identity - do I like women...? Mmmm, no. Do I like men...?"
....
"No."
I learned what asexuality was through fanfiction, and eventually I learned that the way I thought about women wasn't particularly not-lesbian.
So yeah, fanfiction has completely changed my life for the better. It's a huge part of me. And this is just what I can coherently put together right now.
⤷what has fanfiction given you?
hi alllll!! i'm writing this in the byler tag bc i know i lot of people here read and/or write fanfiction:
my peers and i are about to hold argumentative speeches for our national tests, and i have chosen to speak about the positives of fanfic. it often has such a bad rep of being cringe, dumb, unnecessary etc. amongst people not in fandom communities, and i'd like to argue for its good aspects - aspects which i think many of my classmates might not have reflected upon or experienced.
so, i thought, why not turn straight to the source? to those of you who read/write fanfic: do you feel there is anything in particular that fanfiction has contributed to your life?
i'd love to hear what people think about this - fandom spaces are just so special to me ♡

Some thoughts. I dunno why I’m writing this days later. And so early in the morning. BUT SOME THOUGHTS
The shaking in the ground in the Upside Down was from the big monster.
The reason why Vecna needed a portal so big was so he could pull through a huge monster, the monster Nancy said she saw with a huge gaping mouth
The monster will mirror the dragon Will drew in his painting
They say season 5 starts right after season 4 right into the action and then there will be a time skip. I’m assuming something will start going through and they’re able to push it back for now

People will say Byler is forced and then in season 5 there will be a memory montage of all the things we noticed and they missed.

If the Duffers wanted Mike to reject Will, they would've done it in Season 4
The hold out on having Will coming out/revealing his feelings for Mike only to have it end in rejection doesn't work narratively.
If they wanted to go about this route, they would've done it in Season 4. Mike could've realized Will's feelings, let him down easily, been supportive, and it would've left room for Will to find someone new in Season 5. But that's not the directions the Duffers went. Instead they deliberately chose to leave Mike oblivious to Will's feelings, and leave the painting lie open for a reveal in the final season.
Finn says Mike is "clueless" during the van scene and that the Duffers told him it would "pay off" in the end. Of course this means Mike will find out about the painting lie in Season 5 and realize Will's true feelings for him.
But how is a "rejection" a good "pay off"? To "pay off" insinuates something positive or successful. There would be no narrative reason to hold off on this reveal unless it was in favor of a Byler endgame. They deliberately have kept Mike in the dark about Will's feelings the same way the audience is kept in the dark about Mike's feelings toward Will. We are let into Will's head more in Season 4, and are allowed to see his feelings in a way we're not allowed to see Mike's.
Also what would the purpose be of having a multi-season long rejection arc? We know Will had a crush on Mike from at least Season 2 (based on the line from the Snow Ball scene of Will watching Mike as he danced with El). So that means Will has at least liked Mike for 3 seasons now.
A 3-season-long pining arc wouldn't end in any other show in a rejection, so why would it here?
