Hi Tumblr friends. It’s been a while. I know we don’t talk much!

A lot has happened. I went to London and started my PhD and wasn’t having a lot of fun, despite accomplishing something I’d dreamed about for years. It was a weird feeling. I still feel weird about it.

Then I got really sick and was rushed back to Canada and hospitalized. Most of October was spent dealing with that. I had a couple of procedures including getting my gallbladder out. I’m still recovering and under doctor’s orders to rest. I won’t be going back to London anytime soon.

Or at all, at least for my PhD. I missed a big funding deadline while in hospital that means I can’t really afford to continue - it was already a gamble. Coupled with my feelings of uncertainty and homesickness, it’s time for a change of plan. I love Classics and Academia but I’m also completely burnt out on them. 

I don’t know what’s next, aside from follow-up appointments and maybe some long-needed therapy for my anxiety and depression. It’s nice being home with my dog and my family and my things again, but I’m also battling the irrational feeling of being a failure that comes with changing your life path. It’s an uphill battle right now, but I know good things are on the other side.

I’m finally heading to London in a couple of weeks for my PhD! I know I’ve been MIA on Tumblr for a long time (blame that horrible Cleopatra post that went viral and ruined my feeds) but I still miss all my lovely Classics friends on here. So, Londoners (or those near enough!) hit me up! I wanna make friends for my new big city adventure!

like...I’m definitely not too good for any certain job, and I don’t believe I’m entitled to a certain kind of work based on my education. but there comes a point when I’m sitting here for weeks applying to jobs that say “high school diploma preferred but not required” when I have 2 masters degrees that I have to wonder what it was all for

Yup my supervisor wrote some pretty choice mean comments on my drafts. But we’re friends so it’s cool. He knows I can take criticism at least! All the English profs who read my writing said pretty much the same thing, which is a fun (not) neat (not) thing you learn when you become interdisciplinary, I guess!

He literally cut out “on the one hand...on the other hand” about fifteen times. :P

problems with being a classicist but also doing a lot of writing in english

english sentences that last six lines because phrases that are one word in latin are ten in english

constant “it is necessary that”, “it is possible that”, “it is permitted that”

using “in order that” ten times in one paragraph 

“on the one hand…on the other hand…”

with the ______ having been _______ed
