Happiness is simple.
Well, at least it should be.
We all have the essentials to be happy. If we compare ourselves to people with lesser abilities and opportunities, we should be damn happy. If we compare ourselves to 3rd world countries, then we are all selfish, selfish beings… but we can’t compare.
Everyone goes through their own trials and tribulations. It doesn’t matter how significant it is compared to another- you realize that every individual has been hurt, broken, angry, sad— has climbed some sort of mountain. So when you/I/him/her/they/we are asked if we are happy.. well, I think it really depends.
It is extremely hard to answer but extremely easy. It’s the areas that are gray that makes us uneasy and cautious. It’s reality and coming of age that makes us skeptical of happiness. Because happiness can be so easily stripped away.
It’s stripped away because we rely on other people for our happiness (which isn’t wrong or a bad thing) and many in our day and age rely on materialistic matters, too. Many get lost in wealth and money becomes a source of happiness. But as these things are allowed to make us happy.. I think what really really defines happiness is ourselves.
You have to be happy with yourself.
From personal experience, I was and sometimes still am very unhappy with myself. I dwell in the past and I think of the person I used to be and I cringe and shudder at the thought of all my mistakes and imperfections. And I was unhappy with a lot of things regarding myself, too: like my appearance, my finances, my life..
It takes time. It takes time to really identify what makes you happy. I found it in the unconditional love shown by my parents, my husband, my friends, and then myself. I started to be myself and I realized things were so much more happier this way.
It’s still hard though.. sometimes happiness goes away for long periods of time. Sometimes it slaps you across the face and you laugh out loud on your own for no reason and everyone around you thinks you’re crazy. Sometimes it hides and you have to find it again. Be patient..
You know.. they say happiness is three steps forward and two steps back. You have to keeping looking ahead, with intentions of being happy.
