Illustrations for Aquila Magazine, for their October issue, Bones. The article focused on osteoarchaeology, so the main image shows some different archaeological tools, findings, and shows the differences between a typical male skull versus a typical female skull. The second image is of an auroch, an extinct cow-like animal. The third is of a sheep’s jaw, along with some different teeth, to show that archeologists can tell an animal’s life and diet from it’s teeth.

The (almost) completed illustration from a juvenile burial I worked on over the Thanksgiving break. Based on osteological analysis, this individual was likely about 6yo at time of death. Cause of death is undetermined, but he (or she) showed signs of malnutrition (stunted growth, enamel hypoplasia). Interestingly, this child was coated head to toe in red ocher before being carefully interred on his side.
So why disturb a 3,000yo burial? In this case, the threat of erosion and potential interference from looters necessitated the enactment of an archaeological salvage project. By studying the remains of the people who lived at this site, we can develop a sense of how they might have lived. In particular, I’m interested in the disease and nutritional status of this population, who were in the process of transitioning from a hunter-gatherer to an agricultural lifestyle. Determining how this population obtained and processed their food, and how their diet impacted their health, might provide useful information to descendant populations living in the area who are now impacted by rising rates of diabetes and obesity.

Back in the Bronze Age. Archaeologists mostly just have faint shifts in the color of dirt to indicate where the most prominent parts of a wooden house’s construction stood. Remnants of a hearth, traces of flooring and maybe some left behind artifacts can be found to. That leaves a lot for me as an illustrator to fill in, the small detail of the roof for example. Here is a little herd of house sketches based on the same 6+2 long gone wooden poles.
