Heyyy
So
I watched the Live Action of Httyd.
I'm not sure what to think of it.
(this is my personal opinion. It's totally fine if you liked it or not, I would love to hear your reasons. Also, this contains spoilers of the movie, but the biggest plot points came years ago, so idk)
In one hand, it's probably the best Live Action we've got ever since Cruella, from Dreamworks no less. I think it says a lot about how low Disney has fallen on its production, writing skills and excecutive decisons.
The movie is overall decent; The costums are surprisingly faithfull to the original, I really liked the scenary, objects, and I think most of the cast did a great job. It felt nice, and the music from the og remained. I also appreciated most of the dragon's designs, but I'm not a big fan. Some of the added scenes were quite good, like Astrid's and Snotlout's, providing a bit more of depht on both. I also find the Great Hall's modified scene a nice touch: Not many remakes actually take the time to make a somewhat understandable explanation of why there is a more diversified cast, given the fact that it's supposed to be a version more adapted to modern times, "progessive".
Hence one of the problems of this movie: The original isn't old enough to need an adaptation. It's barely 14 years old. The animation it's still at its peak, and many who might watch it with nostalgia are barely young adults. No one really needs it for the most important factor of recent Live Actions: Nostalgia. And yet, people crave it as if it has been 50 years since the first movie.
I think that has more to do with the mentality of the referenced age group/ the daily consumption culture of nowadays, but I'm not diving into that pit.
Now, when I said "most of the cast", I must admit that there were huge exceptions whose way of interpreting the characters I didn't like, such as Gobber, Stoik and Astrid. I heard someone say that Hiccup's attitude was straight up mean instead of sarcastic, which I can't agree just yet since I watched the movie in my language's dub, and his voice was almost a carboard copy of the og- BUT that won't stop me from talking about the others, given that it was not only their voice what I felt didn't do the trick, but their whole interpretation.
First things first, Astrid. I liked her character, but she lacked what most woman in modern media do: Expression. On the good side, we have more information about her in the extra scenes we were given, and the actress did resonate with the character in my opinion. What I did not like is, unfortunately, the rest.
While the dialogs helped to tell more, it just did that. Tell. A big problem of this movie (and Astrid) is that they are always telling instead of showing, and you can even see it on a lot of the actors' faces. They say they are angry and their tone is that of a mad person, but their face does not meet their expression, their body is stiff and doesn't feel genuine, and sometimes their volume doesn't match the emotion. Their sadness, joy, the way they move- It's not organic and you can tell they were told to act like that. To not express too much. To just say, because that is enough. Her fury is controlled, compulsed, quiet. It is not that of a viking, of a teenager. Of Astrid. (Ruffnut also acts a bit like that to a much minor degree, but she is a lot quieter than her original.) And when they do express, it's cartoonish, and is comedic. Many times deflates, causing a serious scene to not have the wanted impact.
That is the case of Stoik the Vast.
His behaviour, while at times genuine and impactful, lacks force when it comes to his introduction (his figure and the way he fought were exaggerated to the point I couldn't take his fight against the monstruous nightmare seriously) and the one in the Great Hall. The thing is, those moments when he excelled were exact cardboard copies of the original in which he didn't make any phisical movement (like the moment he left Hiccup on the Great Hall, and we see him almost breaking down), which leads me to think he studied the animated Stoik's movements and mannerisms. This isn't a bad thing at all, but the problem is that it doesn't translate well into a realistic scenario. Unironically, the one scene that was entirely new (the fight in the first expedition) was the one moment where I took the character seriously. He behaved like Stoik, yes, but he didn't copy and paste every mannerism, but rather use it as a base. He still held throughout the entire movie the personality and true core of Stoik, something someone didn't do.
In this itineration, Gobber's character wasn't that nice to watch for me: He was more cruel and lacked the charm that made the public understand that his words com from a place of care. This leaves us with a mean spirited viking that says awful stuff to 15 year olds and with a very dull emotive scene, in which you don't root for him when he and Stoick face the Red Death. Said scene was also cut short, something that takes away the impact that was meant to be held during the seconds they remaind silent. Instead, they cut it (+ the best parts of the dialoge) and make everything seem way too rushed.
That is another great problem in the remake: The dialogs and their time. The movie doesn't make any pauses to let the enviorment (both physical and emotional) take place and sink in with the audience. Then there's an odd phenomena that I saw during some conversations (mostly between Hiccup, Gobber or Stoik, like the one in the Great Hall with the last two), in which the characters took a long time to speak, almost as if waiting for the beats in the background music to take place. Everything was too fast in the scenes that should be slow, and slow in the scenes where the conversation was supposed to be fluid.
There is also the issue with eliminating narratively speaking important dialog, such as the scene of "Dragons aren't fireproof".
Now, the director of the Live Action claimed this scene didn't provide anything of worth to the plot and ruined the pace (something I don't agree with), to which the confused words of the people watching the movie with me in the theaters say otherwise. Many didn't understand why did Hiccup do that or why did it kill the Red Death, which makes it very visible the huge plothole caused by ignoring the scene.
Finally, there's what I percieved to be the lowest point on the movie: The photography. While the scenary was breathtaking and very well excecuted, the job done to represent such space was rather disapointing. For example, we had the scenes in wgich Hiccup went in search of Toothless prior meeting him. In the original version, the imagery of the forest was key to both understanding the situation and setting an ambiance around our protagonist, with the forest covering the light, plus having faint noises of nature and background music, although the sight of the scene was what captivated the audience first, only then to for us to be genuinely afraid at the sight of the night fury. I personally felt this didn't happen in the remake.
First things first, the scenary was bright and sunny, with tons of nature sounds. Sure, it was beautiful, but it felt more like a walk through the forest for a picnic, instead of what was actually happening. Then we reach the shock of the scene, which gets really watered down with the strange angle they use, with the rock Hiccup is on top of being the center of the picture rather than Hiccup himself. So, when the nightfury is shown, you don't feel genuinely afraid. It doesn't help the fact that when the fallen tree is shown the camera makes it seem a lot smaller and less impactfull as it was supposed to be, regardless of the movies realism. Tbh, the whole scene made me feel claustrophobic with how close we were to the characters' faces when the scene wasn't narratively needed to.
In the end, the movie wasn't really that horrible as most people made it be, it can work pretty well as a reboot- but aside from being faithful to the og and the good cast, it's not very amusing narratively-wise, photography-wise nor did it add anything great to the franchise besides Snotlout's scenes. I also don't see it working well on its own as other tumblr user mentioned, but I don't think it has to, given its purpose. It lacked charm, humor and spice, like most live action movies do nowadays, so I can't help but say that it's average. Sure, it's beautiful, but it's handled poorly in comparison to the original movie, and it doesn't excell at much, nor does it have terrible lows.
But, that's just me.
What it's your opinion? I'd love to hear it!

What are your favorite Rottmnt headcanons?
Okay these are some headcanons I could remember off the top of my head-
Let's get some popular fanons out of the way - insomniac Leo and medic Leo are two that I like a lot. Medic Leo is interesting to me because I don't think it really works in canon, Leo's entire thing is that he doesn't feel like he has a good "role" to fill in the team, if he actually had the role of medic it would kinda undermine that. But that's what fanmade stories are for, you can explore fun ideas without it affecting canon, so I like it as a headcanon.
Obviously good ol' disaster twins, certified classic. I've talked about this before but I personally view Leo as the older twin, but I also don't think Leo or Donnie would know that so because of that they're constantly fighting over who the oldest one is out of the two of them. But I also like the idea that Leo doesn't really care that much, he mostly keeps calling himself the oldest one because to piss off Donnie because Donnie REFUSES to believe he'd be younger than an immature idiot like Leo. But because of that Leo will call himself the younger twin on occasion if it would benefit him in a certain situation, like if Donnie is mad at him for something and Leo just goes "🥺👉👈please forgive me?🥺👉👈 your baby brother?🥺👉👈" which would also infuriate Donnie LMAO.
I have some headcanons about the brothers' music taste. We already know their canon favorite music genres but I have some extra ideas. For example Raph's favorite genre soul, but I also like the idea of him enjoying blues and lo-fi hip hop and such. Leo's into glamrock specifically, but I also view him as liking a lot of rock music, but mostly 70s-90s rock. Also as an MCR fan I am going to project my love for MCR onto him and you cannot stop me, but also in my defense The Black Parade album is very inspired by for example Pink Floyd and Queen and such which I already imagine Leo would be into so I'm justified in thinking he'd AT LEAST like that specific album. (But he'd also like Danger Days simply because I say so)
When it comes to Casey Jr's origins, I've seen a lot of different ideas in the fandom, either that Casey Sr is his bio mom or that she adopted him. And when CJ is depicted as Casey's bio-kid, I've seen headcanons where either Casey just gave birth to him normally or that CJ is some sorta test-tube-baby-clone or whatever made with the help of either Donnie or Draxum. For a long time I couldn't decide which headcanon I prefered, so because of that I like the idea of it just being a mystery that none but Casey knows the answer to. Like, Casey just had a baby one day that she informed everyone was her kid and no one had any idea where said kid came from. And no one in the resistance really had much time to dwell on it cause they were all too busy fighting the krang. "Casey has a kid now? Okay whatever good for her we don't have time to think about that we're all dying"
Another thing discussed in the fandom, what the heck Baron Draxum's first name? Some people see Baron as his name and some see it as just a title. I already brought this up in another post but I view it as both! His fist name is Baron, and he also has the title of Baron, so he's Baron Baron Draxum. But calling him that is a bit reduntant and silly so he just shortens it down to one singular Baron.
Mikey has the highest spice-tolerance in the family while Donnie has the lowest. Actually I just have a tendency to project my sensory issues with food onto Donnie in general, poor guy lmao sucks to be him.
Mikey is the second physically strongest out of the turtles (after Raph of course)
Donnie is the second most naturally talanted mystic user (after Mikey of course) but because he's trained the least with mystic powers Raph and Leo are both more skilled than him.
Donnie was the first to meet April and kinda tried to gate-keep her by hiding her from his brothers LMAO but they found out about her after like a week
I like to think Donnie is someone that likes to act all villainous for ✨The Aesthetic✨ but really can't handle being intentionally cruel and sadistic. Like he'd act all tough and be like "heh I know seventeen different ways to torture someone for information.... 😈my dark and twisted mind....😈 " but then he gets nauseous from seeing a bit of blood. Like he's all bark no bite.
Another headcanon I've brought up before is the idea that Donnie got REALLY into researching conspiracy theories about Lou Jitsu's mysterious disappearance when he was a kid. And he'd infodump about these theories TO SPLINTER who just had to do his best to keep his poker face through that.
Dunno if ya'll remember that post circling around a little while ago theorising that CJ has a prosthetic hand, but regardless, I've adopted that as a headcanon.
I love love LOVE the idea of Raph and Leo being co-leaders, mostly because I think specifically rottmnt's versions of the A-Team would be the only ones who could actually pull it off LMAO. I think neither of them deal well with having too much responsibility put on them and they overall are able to make up for each other's weaknesses. After the movie I think if they sat down to discuss they'd decide to just split up the leadership role between the two of them and it would actually work.
My headcanon for the turtles' eyecolour is yet another thing I've talked about, but I really like the idea of them having dark brown eyes :]
#I love Draxum's headcannon#ofc his name is Baron Baron Draxum#tbh I think he'd be Baron Baron Draxum the THIRD#just for the funnsies#rottmnt

Welp, I promised I would talk about my Shayla in this post, so... TADA!
I had this in my drafts for a while, but...I forgot.
She's bitchy, she's angry, she's ginger. What else is there to ask?
Unlike Whistle, Mildread is quite talkative and shares a story with the Riders, if by that one could mean constant shouting and unnerving apathy towards them during httyd 2, given her fierce loyalty for Drago Bludfist and the Dragon Army- After all, she was the head of the Polar Brigade (made up name for the guys dressed in polar bear coats).

these guys
One could hope that she would get a chill pill during httyd 3 after being on the viking equivalent of rehab and teraphy.
Yet again, this is Mildread, so there is no way that can actually happen. To make matters worse for the Riders, turns out that her new dragon buddy matches perfectly (if not more) her freak. In one hand, Yay! She's not evil anyore and will finally stop trying to murder Eret! Dragons for the win!
On the other... Odin have mercy on Berk.

#She's awesome!!#I always gotta love a bonded typhoomerang#I hope for Berk's sake they both learn to play nicer with everyone XD#httyd ocs#<- previous tags#Trust me#playing nicer is the LEAST of their worries#You see#the thing with Typhomerangs is that while you CAN be on top of one#riding it is both impossible and a direct path towards throwing up#given that they are the literal equivalent to a rollercoaster impulsed by a rocket.#the fact that she's trying to fly one (and fail miserably) is basically an incoming disaster

a guide to writing touch-averse characters, by someone who can’t even pat the shoulder of their crying grandma*:
initial questions:
consider: why is your character touch-averse? is it because of sensory issues? (if so, is the character autistic? adhd? do they have fibro? standalone spd? a combination thereof? something else?) trauma? (if so, what’re the specifics?) orientation? (if so, are they aromantic? asexual? dysphoric? a combination thereof? something else?) are they just kinda Like That?
consider: how does your character experience touch-aversion? that is, what’s it feel like to them? (is it overwhelming? does it physically hurt? does it make them physically uncomfortable? emotionally uncomfortable? anxious? panicked? angry? nauseous? a combination of these? does it vary?) and to what extent? (a little? a moderate amount? a lot? does the severity remain the same all through, or does it increase if the touch lingers, or decrease, or fluctuate? is the effect immediate, or delayed? does it vary?)
consider: what are the nuances of their experience? for example, are some moments better or worse than others? (high-energy ones? low-energy ones? emotionally-charged ones? others?) are some kinds of touch better or worse than others? (light? firm? unexpected? forewarned? brief? prolonged? on their back? hands? chest? arms? shoulders? knees? neck? other?) is touch more or less bearable from certain people? (children? men? women? strangers? friends? very close friends? family? very close family? pets? partners? doctors? other?)
consider: how do they approach their touch-aversion? for example, how do they usually feel about it? (neutral? negative? positive? other?) are they able to set boundaries? (if so, do they? if so, do they enforce them?) how do they respond, in any case, if those boundaries are violated? (do they freeze? do they flinch? do they jerk away? do they shrug off the touch carefully? do they keep still and bear it? do they snap at the person? do they speak calmly? do they panic? dissociate? other?) how do they talk about it, if it all? (neutrally? negatively? positively? other?)
consider: how do others approach their touch-aversion? for example, how do different people feel about it, if they’re aware of it? what assumptions do they make? how do they act on those assumptions, if at all? do they respect your character’s boundaries? do they try to desensitize your character? do they want to?
common pitfalls:

What’s a phrase they say a lot?
Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?

What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate?
If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?

On the fields with the gang
I just now realized I never drew the whole group together, so...
sometimes family is a violent hairball, a blondie w daddy issues, a malpracticing surgeon, a bitchy monkey girl, a very depressed mother, her mute ginger bestie with a complicated past and a cult composed of an hiper agressive frog, a bibrant toad that could lift a tree, and a crocodile, all following a bald cat that is somehow scarrier.
Yeah. Family
