@davekatweek day 7: fluff! well, it was started out as fluff, at least. i wanted to draw @soggedupfrog's freak-stage karkat from this post, so i decided to draw dave(kat) meeting baby karkat! but then i had to draw them meeting baby dave too and well... it got sad really quick. i hope in a somewhat cathartic way, at least? otherwise hey, nothing wrong with double sadstuck

i have so many soft feelings about dave's compassion for himself, shown in his easy camaraderie with his alternate selves, and his affection for his younger self in the game over timeline.

when karkat and dirk encounter other versions of themselves, they see them as the embodiment of everything they both resent and envy about themselves. they assume them to be deserving of abuse, and take it upon themselves to inflict that abuse, because it is what they think they deserve, and maybe they think punishing other versions of themselves will fill that quota, somehow.

but not dave. despite his hellish childhood, i think he always subconsciously knew he deserved to be cared for, but he also knew no one was going to do that for him, so he took it upon himself to be his own keeper. when dave sees another dave, he doesn't think "it's fine if he suffers to further my aims, because he's me and i have the right to make that call". instead, he thinks "that's my brother, and i trust him and want to keep him safe".

so if dave ever met his younger self, of course he would be hit with the reminder of his own unpleasant memories. but more importantly, he would be hit with overwhelming feelings of love and protectiveness for this small child— his brother, who deserves to feel safe and be cared for.

tricky words I always see misspelled in fics: a guide

Viscous/vicious – Viscous is generally used to describe the consistency of blood or other thick liquids. Vicious is used to describe something or someone who is violent. 

Piqued/Peaked/Peeked – To pique someone’s interest is to catch or tease their attention. When something peaks, it reaches its total height or intensity. To peek (at) something is to look briefly, or glance. 

Discrete/Discreet – this is a tough one. Discrete means to be separate, or distinct, i.e., two discrete theories. Conversely, when someone is discreet, they are being secretive or cautious to avoid attention. 

Segue/Segway – one is a transition between things, the other is a thing you can ride at the park and definitely fall off of.

Conscious/Conscience/Conscientious – to be conscious is to be awake, i.e., not unconscious, or to be aware of something. Your conscience is the little voice in your head telling you not to eat the entire pint of ice cream. Finally, to be conscientious is to be good, to do things thoroughly, to be ruled by an inner moral code.
