Laughter part 8
Was he dead? He appeared to be. Was his friend dead? She was more likely to be.
An intense light came from far away, getting closer to them.
Krenan was no longer feeling pain in his hand and distant voices were eccoing. One of them started calling his name. Were they angels? Maybe they were. He couldn’t see their faces, only light and parts of their bodies. He saw Arlina being taken in someone’s arms and disappear.
Krenan turned his head around, only to see a hand touching his face. After that, he felt his body lifting away. That was it, he was being taken to the heavens. He could hear his mother’s cry when she discovered what happened. Arlina’s parents were crushed by seeing how degrading their daughter’s situation was, with her leg almost ripped off and with the bones exposed in the pool of blood.
He laid his hand where his face was touched. It was soft. He could see that hand returning and touching him again. But this time he felt a sharp pain on his cheek.
Did angels ever slapped? His mother slapped him when he did something wrong. Was this some kind of punishment or some sort of heavenly torture? If that was it, he was going to accept it, he deserved it.
It came harder as it hitted his face again and again and again… Now Krenan was getting annoyed, did he really deserved to be there in the first place? The boy put his hand on his face trying to relieve his pain, when he looked back at it, it was dirt dirty.
Wait a minute… Since when angels had dirty hands?
Again the voice called his name, louder, louder, louder… Louder! Louder! Krenan!
- Krenan! - it was his father, trying to wake him up.
When his eyes opened again, he was back in his room, laid down on his bed. Nothing in it have changed since he left. The boy rose his head up and looked around, just to make sure of it.
Nothing. There was nothing at all. So all of that was a bad dream? Only a dream and nothing more? Thank goodness!
He now lied safe on his bed. No worries, no regrets. His body was now light like a plume and Krenan enjoyed the warmth of the sheets under his blanket. When he breathed in, he scenced a delicious smell right at the side of his bed. A large bowl of soup calling for him. It was cold on the outside, so having some soup made perfect sense.
He streched his arms to reach it. It was still warm, but not too hot. Krenan took the spoon and started eating. The sweet flavor of chicken broth filled his soul with pure tenderness. He digged his face into the bowl as it got empty, with the spoon making the same route from his mouth and back into the bowl in each second that passed. During this sacred ritual of eating he got a large piece of chicken and some potato slices that melted in his watery mouth.
After finishing his meal he felt just into getting out of his room and see his parents who were supposely having dinner in the leaving room, but his attempts of getting out of bed proved he was wrong. A burning pain came from his back, concealed under many bands of white fabric. In pure instinct, he tried to put his hand over his wounds against the pain, only then he noticed that his hand was also covered in bands with stains of blood along with a green stain of herbs to prevent infections.
But if he was like this, then…
Despite being in pain, he jumped out of his bed and ran to find Arlina. However, the pain slowed him down terribly, like his legs were fastened in huge chains of iron. The best he could do was a clumsy walk, step by step, moving towards the door while groaning in a burning agony penetrating his leg bones. Krenan tried to support himself with his hand, but when it touched the leg of the bed it hurted as much as the rest of his body. He could still feel the bite of that creature, so he used his good hand to help his legs and reach the door handle.
By opening his room’s door, he saw his parents talking to each other about what happened to him and Arlina, but that was the least of his worries, he wanted to see Arlina.
Both of the grown ups jumped in worry and were shocked to see their son out of his bed just like that, with his bands exposed and heading out of the house.
- Son! - his father said with worry before his son could reach the door and ran to catch Krenan when this was just about to fall. - What are you doing?
The boy had lost a lot of blood. That was costing his consciousness as he could barely see his surroundings.
- Where is she? Where is she? - Krenan started asking in despair without stopping. At first, Kall couldn’t understand what his son was talking about, but soon he realized it was about Arlina.
- Arlina is at home with her parents. She is okay. - his father told him.
- It’s all my fault - the boy said in despair and regret.
- You don’t have to blame yourself, son. You saved her life, you did just fine.
- It’s my fault she got hurt, I need to see her.
- You can see her later, Krenan. You must rest now, you’ve lost too much blood.
His father took him back into his room and laid him on the bed, calmly. It didn’t take long for Krenan to fall asleep again and there he stayed for a long time.
Their village’s situation was getting worse as time passed and now with two injured children they would spend precious medicine because of a reckless attitude from Krenan’s part. Maybe he would survive, but the same couldn’t be said of Arlina.
In the next day, that wasn’t there due to the sun’s absence, his mother brought him another bowl of soup and his medicine. He begged again to visit his friend, but his mother denied. It was the first time she saw her son so worried, different from his previous troubles when he used to be more reckless and didn’t care about consequences, what made her surprise, but it was possible to understand.
It was time to give his medicine. As aways, he refused to take it. Krenan never liked tea, but his mother, with all her intelligence, knew exactly what to do. Expecting he wouldn’t take the tea she brought to him, she chopped the thyme and added it into the soup along with lemon juice to soft the meat. The warm broth went down his throat gently, heating his body up and the suculent meat and the broth’s thickness renewed his strength. The perfect mix of sauces, his mother’s expertise, made the kid eat the soup faster than any other food she would make. She knew he would love her soup.
Krenan finished the soup faster than she expected. After that he got sleepy and settled himself in his bed, but again he asked her about Arlina just before she left the room. Knowing that he wouldn’t give up on the girl, the housewife said she would talk with his father, it was just enough to calm him down, and she kindly asked Krenan to rest. It didn’t take long for the boy to sleep again as the door closed in front of him.
