Nie Huaisang is such a character. He can faint on command. The character guide in the novel describes him as a dandy and lists his weapons as saber (ostensibly) and crying (actually). He stalked a canary for several days and then sneaked it into class. He collects porn and shares it with his friends. He's in a sword wizard society and his clan in particular is known for their blades but he never once has a fight scene. His characteristic accessory is a paper fan. He failed summer camp twice. He formed a Golden Core nearly a decade later than everyone else his age. When his brother was killed he set in motion a several years long revenge scheme that involved both careful planning and insane improv. He built a reputation on not knowing anything. He threw himself on his brother's killer weeping and saying "if you don't help me I'm killing myself in front or you." Truly who is doing it like him

thats why yi city arc is so fucking good. xue yang may start hanging out with xxc just to fuck with him and make him do horrible things, but he does actually come to care about him. at the same time, he is himself - he could never be anything except who he is for the long term. and xxc would never willingly be around him, let alone be his friend. the tragic thing about xue yang is that he is himself, and only when he pretends to be someone else can he get something that makes him 'content' to a certain extent. and yet he is too far down the path to ever return, nor would he necessarily even if he could. and because he is himself, because he has gone too far to turn back, he ruins the only thing that made him content - his time ran out, his mask broke

whenever I see someone claim that Xue Yang never cared about Xiao Xingchen, I'm stuck wondering what they think the candy was about

like.

What do you think it's supposed to mean that Xue Yang's tragic backstory centers around chasing after the instant gratification and temporary enjoyment of sweets at the expense of his own safety. That he was denied the thing he wanted more than anything (sweets), and instead brutally injured for daring to demand what he'd been promised and had rightfully earned (sweets). That Xiao Xingchen's kindness towards Xue Yang is shown in the form of healing Xue Yang's injuries and giving him candy. That after Xiao Xingchen's death, Xue Yang holds that last piece of candy Xiao Xingchen gave him alongside Xiao Xingchen's sword and soul, and never eats it. Denies HIMSELF. For almost a DECADE. Lets it rot just to keep it, just to keep the last gift Xiao Xingchen gave to him. That holding that piece of candy, that evidence of what he'd lost, mattered more to him than eating sweets. That he died holding it.
