I just finished watching the Arena Tour of Jesus Christ Superstar and. I am. floored??? This is not a simple JCS production, this is a whole-ass reinterpretation. They didn't just say "what if we set it in Occupy Wall Street", they rethought it to work in that context. And it works (almost all the time). Without changing almost any of the lyrics, and no important ones. Just with staging and character interpretations, they change the meaning of so many lyrics to fit into their new setting.

Maybe I'm just biased because I was personally involved in (my country's version of) this set of protests, but this felt like rediscovering JCS. This show is almost not gay (which is impressive considering!!!), but it could be called "leftist infighting: the musical". And it fucking works.

(Also, I've seen quite a few people mock this Judas for the white dreads. I don't know if these are people who are too young to remember, or if maybe things were different in the US, but for me, setting something in the 2011 protests and not having anyone with white person dreads and a kefiyyeh? That would have just felt weird. xD)
