My hot take/hypothesis after learning about kpop for a month: bigger companies can afford to cherry pick their idols because they have infinite resources (choreographers, vocal/dance coaches, lyricists, producers) but smaller companies need their idols to double as producers/choreographers/lyricists, so they can’t be too picky. Therefore: you look at groups managed by bigger companies and you’re like wow they’re a little boring and all pretty similar and too well behaved for me to be interested, and you look at groups managed by smaller companies and you’re like wow each one is weirder and gayer than the last because they’re all insanely talented art/music/theater kids.
