Down For The Day
Today particularly was a difficult day. It was all rain, and all pain. This rainy Sunday marked the one year anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis passing. The rain seemed to drown you in your own feelings, even though you knew your best friend, Ponyboy, would not be able to keep it together today. As much as you wanted to be with him to help him through this hard time, you could not. Mainly because you could not help your own self. Mrs. Curtis was a mom to you also. Whenever things happened at home, she was the one always there to pick up the pieces. She was like a mom anyone could ever ask for. She took care of everyone in the gang, no matter what their reputation was. Bailing Dally out of jail? She did it.
Making Johnny lunch for school? She did it.
Anything you ever needed, she had it covered. Because she seemed to know everyone’s needs before they were spoken of, nobody knew what to do now when they needed something. It left an empty feeling in your heart. Even Mr. Curtis was the idol father to everyone. From playing sport games with Two-Bit and Steve to giving Johnny and Ponyboy the talk, he was always there too. A few tears slipped down your cheek as you reminisced. Despite how broken you felt, you had to come through for Ponyboy. You may not have been his mother, but just like her, you had to be there. You walked slowly down the street with your head hanging low. Today was a quiet, depressing day in the neighborhood. Even the Socs stayed on their side of town today, as a way to pay their respects. As you turned the corner, you caught eye of Ponyboy sitting on his porch. He held a small, friendly-looking cat with white fur in his arms, petting the animal softly. “Hey Pone…whatcha doin?” You smiled, joining him on the porch. He did not bother to look up at you, just continued to pet his little furry friend. “This cat is so gentle. So kind and friendly. Always happy and…” Ponyboy trailed off with his words as he slowly shook his head, disapproving himself. “I don’t want anything to happen to the cat, she means so much to me. I don’t want to lose the cat, I’m sure she has a family she has to stick around for or something!” Ponyboy broke out into a sob, clinching onto the cat he only known for a few minutes. You pulled your best friend (and the cat) closer to you as you wrapped your arms around him. You rubbed his back as he cried and cried. “P-Ponyboy…” You mumbled. You whispered consoling words into his ear, that worked to no avail. Your throat tightened as you choked back a sob. Emotional pain spread throughout your body as you felt yourself mentally breaking down. You clenched tighter on to Ponyboy as you heard him whisper something you did not catch. “What?” You softly asked. “I-I said I can’t do this anymore!” Ponyboy exclaimed, shoving you and the cat off of him. He ran his hands through his hair and cried so hard, the whole neighborhood could have heard. “Y/N, everyday I lose it at least once… I can’t live without them! They made this terrible life worth living, and now they’re gone! My momma understood me. She knew I was different, and instead of teasin’ me like I ain’t worth it, she made me love myself! I need my parents because nowadays I wish I was in that car with em!” You cried with pain and shock at his confession. Broken inside, it took everything in you to scoot over to Ponyboy and hold him in your arms again. With your right arm around his shoulders, you wiped away his tears with your left. “Ponyboy, I know it hurts like hell.” You ran your hands through his hair repeatedly as you spoke, “I know your parents loved you with everything in them, and I am more than sure they wanted you to love yourself. Nobody will ever be able to replace them Pone, but I will be here every step of the way to pick up your broken pieces. Ya know why? Because I love you more than I love myself. You’re special and kind just like your momma, and you gotta keep it that way, it’s a good way to be. So please don’t give up. Please fight each day for her. Once you get tired of fighting, lean on me because I sure as hell will fight for you!” You cradled Ponyboy in your arms as you spoke. He calmed down greatly as he slowly sat up. “Thank you Y/N, golly, I love you so much.” Ponyboy said as he hugged you tightly. Ponyboy looked you in the eyes as if you were gold. “What’s wrong?” You questioned shyly. “Nothin,” Ponyboy smiled as he continued, “You just remind me of her.” And with that, your best friend of many years leaned in, and planted a heart melting kiss on your lips.

Best Friends
“Have a good day Y/N!” You waved goodbye to your parents as they drove off in the brand new Mustang, leaving you behind to attend school for the day. You ran your hand through your beautiful hair, and started walking into the building.
“Hey Y/N!”
“Y/N, how’s it goin?”
“Hey, you look good today Y/N.”
Compliments and greetings surrounded you as you walked down the hallway with a celebrity smile. You waved and greeted your many friends and secret admirers. As a soc, popularity came easily for you, especially because you were a pretty and fun girl. You felt the stares and glares burning into your skin from all of your peers. Even though you had many people trying to gain your attention, you only had your focus on a particular greaser boy. You turned down the narrow hallway, smiling to yourself as you saw him at his locker. “Hey Johnny,” you greeted with a hug and a smile. The shy boy hugged you back for a second, then blushed away rather quickly. “You seem embarrassed of me,” you whined. Johnny faced the ground with his hands in the pockets of his jean jacket. “No, it ain’t that, I just don’t wanna hurt your reputation or nothin,’” Johnny said, avoiding eye contact. It hurt you that he thought so badly of himself. You ruffled your hand through Johnny’s hair with a giggle, “Come on Johnnycakes, even if you did hurt my reputation, if wouldn’t change our friendship!” Finally, Johnny smiled and looked up at you happily. “Thank you Y/N.” You hugged Johnny goodbye as you made your way to your first class of the day.
Sitting at a table in your school lunchroom, you pulled out a lunchbox to retrieve your neatly packed and expensive lunch. Soon after, you pulled out a second meal exactly the same.
“Who’s the second one for?” Your friend Cherry asked from across the lunch table. You opened your mouth to respond, but got cut off by someone sitting next to you. “H-hi,” Johnny greeted softly. “Hey buddy,” you responded.
“Johnny, you never bring a lunch! You must be starving,” Marcia laughed insensitively. Johnny looked down at the tabled with sadness and a broken heart, which you simply could not allow. “Bite your tongue, Marcia,” you placed the second packed lunch in front of Johnny, who beamed with joy. “I hope you like it.” You smiled at him. Johnny smiled back while motioning for you to come closer. You leaned in closer to Johnny, who leaned in close to your ear. “I love you,” Johnny whispered. Heat rose to your cheeks, which Johnny found absolutely adorable. “I love you too,” you whispered back joyfully.

Library
At your age, you could no longer rely on your parents for money. If you wanted something done, you had to do it yourself. Taking matters into your own hands, you found a part-time job at your local library. You loved the library. It was a good escape from the rough Greasers and stuck-up Socs.
After school, you made your way to the library like you did every single day. “Good Afternoon Y/N. Please go to the book return outside and bring them in.” Ms. Scott, the librarian, ordered you. You nodded and made your way out the front door. Outside by the book return, you saw a group of greasers hanging around. You recognized one of them as Sodapop Curtis, the dropout. You sighed to yourself as you made your way to the book return. You knew these greasers only wanted trouble. They probably never picked up a book in their entire life. “Excuse me,” you said politely. A boy with rusty-colored hair stepped out of your way, giving you access to the book return. Sodapop saw you handling your business, and was admiring it. He did not realize he was smiling until Dally pat him on the shoulder. “Whatcha smiling at man?” Dally laughed. Sodapop blushed and hung his head low. Usually whenever he saw a pretty girl, he would walk right up to her and flirt like a king, but not this time. He could tell just by watching the way you walk, you probably wanted a guy with a high IQ and nice car. Ponyboy finally came out the library and thanked his friends for waiting. The greasers all left, finally. Once you finished stacking books, you went home.
The next day, Sodapop went to the library once he got off work. He picked up a book and pretended to read when in reality, he was watching how beautiful you looked. He thought the concentration in your eyes was absolutely adorable, but what really hooked him was the smile you gave when you saw a book that looked interesting to you while stacking. He could not help himself, he was already falling. You looked up from the pile of books to catch Sodapop staring at you with a cute little smirk. Being polite, you smiled back. His heart skipped a few beats once he saw your gorgeous smile.
When Ponyboy wanted to return his book to the library, Sodapop made it too obvious that he would gladly go with him. Once arrived, Sodapop sat at the table that gave him the best view of you. With a few books, Ponyboy sat across from him. It did not take him long for him to notice his brother’s gaze. He followed his eyes, and saw they were on you. Ponyboy smiled and nudged his brother. “Talk to her,” Ponyboy grinned. Sodapop snapped back to reality at his words. “What? No way. She would want a smart rich guy, not a dropout greaser.” Sodapop said sadly. “How’d you know if you never talked to her?” Ponyboy said. Sodapop shrugged his shoulders and Ponyboy rolled his eyes. “Come on,” Ponyboy said. He pulled Sodapop up from his chair and in your direction. A few feet back, Ponyboy whispered to Sodapop, “Go ask her where books fantasy books are.” Before Sodapop could back out, Ponyboy shoved him forward. Sodapop nervously took a few steps closer to you. “Uh, hi, you work here right?” Sodapop questioned. Without looking up, you responded, “You should know, you watch me stack books all the time.” You really did not want any greasers messing with you today. Sodapop looked back at Ponyboy with a plea for help, but Ponyboy only motioned for him to continue. “Can you show me where the fantasy books are?” He asked softly. You looked up at him to see if he was joking or not. He smiled at you, and you could not help but smile back. “The dropout wants to read a book?” You joked. Sodapop’s smile faded as he spoke, “I’m trying something new today.” He grinned again. “Well, follow me!” You said excitedly. You grabbed Sodapop’s hand and led him to the fantasy section of the library. Still holding hands, you turned to face him. “Why do you stare at me when you come here?” You asked. “Because you’re beautiful,” Sodapop admitted. You blushed at his compliment, making him giggle. “You should come by the library more often,” you charmed. “How about instead, you come by the drive-in with me tonight?” Sodapop rubbed his thumb on the back of your hand. “Pick me up at 7,” you smiled. Butterflies fluttered in your stomach with every passing moment. “See you then, bye Y/N,” Sodapop squeezed your hands before walking away with the biggest grin on his face. Sodapop was so excited, he completely forgot about the fantasy books.

“Tell me!” You begged your best friend for the past five minutes. “No,” Johnny answered softly with a shy smile. “Well at least tell me about her,” you pleaded. “Okay,” He laughed, “She’s uh….really gorgeous. She’s smart and sweet, talented, adorable,” Johnny rambled while blushing at the thought of her. “Johnnycakes,” you interrupted, “I have a feelin’ you could go on for hours and hours, just tell me. You tell me everything else!” You said, feeling some betrayal. Johnny faced the ground, his face crimson red with embarrassment. “I didn’t want to tell you because…it’s you.”

Quote
Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.

I love you
You woke up this morning to your parents fighting. They always fought, mostly about you. It was always the same thing. You heard the same words each and every time. Useless, worthless, stupid, every word in the dictionary. The only person that kept you going, was johnny cade. Your boyfriend of three years and soulmate. He was your best friend, everything you could ask for in a person. he hasnt talked to you at all today. No messages, no voicemails, nothing. It was unlike johnny. He always called or checked up on you. So you had started to get worried. You had a feeling he wouldn’t be at his house, so you checked the curtis house. There was no answer. It was very unlike for someone to not be home. “Hey Darry, where are you? I stopped by the house and no one was home” you said while you legs were shaking. “ Y/N, you haven’t heard? Johnnys in the hospital, he has a concussion.” Once you heard those words, you hung up and rushed to the hospital. A million thoughts were rushing through your head on the drive there. Is he alright? Will he be okay? once you got there, you saw the whole gang in the waiting room. You had immediately ran up to dally thinking he possibly knew something. “Dal, what the hell happened?” you had questioned him. “It was his dad y/n. His dad pushed him and he hit his head” dal tried to calm you down. “ where is he? Can I see him?”. He then pointed to his room. you could tell he had just woken up. He looked bad. Bandages and bruises. “Hey Johnny” you whispered while grabbing his hand. “Hey y/n” he mumbled. “Um y/n, there’s something I want to tell ya, I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while now actually” “ of course, what is it?” Was he going to break up with me? You asked yourself. “ I love you y/n, alot. You make me the happiest person in the world. Your the only reason why I’m still here. You make everyday worth living. You mean so much to me. You’ve shown me what love can feel like. You make me feel alive. Your worth it, more than that and you deserve the world. I want to give you everything. You’ve always felt like home and I can’t imagine this world without you. So, will you do me the honor of being my wife?”. Johnny then pulled out a beautiful . “Oh my goodness, yes!” you had felt estatic. You were so happy. The gang then came in the room smiling and clapping. “ way to go johnny” You could hear Steve say. “ theres one more thing I want to ask you y/n. ” what is it babe?“ You asked him. ” I know both of our home loves aren’t very good, and that our parents treat us like we are nothing. So, do you want to run away together? Never look back? We could buy an apartment. Start a family" he looked so happy saying that. “ of course johnny, I would love too” He made you so happy. You haven’t been genuinely happy in such a long time. And you were so grateful for Johnny cade. The love of your life.

Thank You
The only thing you knew how to do was panic. Freak out from the monsters that you saw everywhere, no matter where you were. Your doctor gave you a prescription that was suppose to help you. Two pills a day keeps the visions away. But not everything could be fixed with medicine, not your ill mind. Your hallucinations on the daily resulted in you developing anxiety. Seeing bad things all the time made you afraid of ordinary people, so you kept quiet. The town talked about you, “the crazy girl” every time you walked by. Socs would come up behind you and scream, scaring you into panic attacks every single time. Today, it was different.
“Y/N, do you want some candy?” Your mom asked you, standing outside of the DX. She lifted your chin up, making you look her in the eyes. You nodded hurriedly with fearful eyes, returning your glare to the cement ground below your shaky legs. “Go get it yourself,” your mom said harshly. Your heart dropped to your stomach once the command slipped her lips. You looked at your mom, hoping and praying she was kidding. In return, you only saw seriousness. You shook your head aggressively, negative thoughts clouding every inch of your corrupted mind. “Y/N,” your mom roughly gripped your shoulders. “The only way you can get better is by interaction. How can you make it in the world if you cannot buy a candy bar?” Your mom whined at you. She gave you no option, no chance to back out as she shoved you through the doors of the DX.
You scurried to the back of the somewhat empty gas station. The thought of approaching the cashier and buying something made your heartbeat speed up, taking your breath with it. You would mess up. You’re a failure, failures always mess up. Desperately, your lungs tried to fight for air as you sank to the floor, blurry vision slowly creeping in your eyes. “Ma'am, you alright?” A voice ringed in your ears from across the store, pushing you deeper into a panic amongst the gas station floor. A young face appeared in front of yours, two hands gripping your shoulders. “Hey, look at me,” a soft voice said to you. You looked up at the blurry boy fearfully with tears as you tried to shove him away, screaming loudly in the process. “I’m not going to hurt you doll,” he whispered. You felt a hand rubbing up and down your back relaxingly, which did calm you down to an extent. The boy continued to whisper and gently rub your back for a countless amount of time. Your vision became more clear with each breath you learned to take again. “What’s your name?” The boy asked. You stared up at the kind stranger, meeting his worrying eyes for the first time. His handsome face held a look you never seen before, a look of concern instead of disappointment. “Well, I’m Sodapop, and I need you to stand for me,” He said nicely. Sodapop held your hand with his other arm around your waist, lifting you slowly off the floor. He led you to the front of the store, never letting go of your hand and waist. You arrived at a seat next to the exist doors, and he sat you down. “What were you going to buy?” He questioned with a smile. You raised your shaking arm, and pointed to the cokes across the store. He walked off briefly, and when he returned, he had a coke and some candy. He held up the candy bars as he ringed them up himself on the cashier, lifting his eyebrows for your awaiting approval. You gave him a small nod which he returned with another famous smile. Sodapop walked out from behind the counter. “I paid for you, so don’t worry about it,” He said as he handed you a bag filled with goodies. It took every bit of you to build up the courage, but you did it: “T-Thank you,” you whispered. He gave a silent gasp that transformed into a shocked smile, that never left his face as you walked cautiously out the DX.
