Typically a romantic partner can't and probably shouldn't dedicate as much energy to protecting their partner as Minazuki does to Sho. He will kill to protect him. He will drown the world in blood if Sho wants it. Don't forget Sho's initial goal in Ultimax was to exist in a world where no one else does bc he's been betrayed by every person he knew and cared about up until that point. And the Shadow Corps never checked to see if Ikutsuki's plots had ever involved anyone else, leading to him being abandoned in the darkness which he takes to be a sin on their part. (Mitsuru admits in her story mode that she should have done more research into that but it was also like 10 years after the fact.) Sho is damaged and can't trust anyone and Minazuki will never dissuade him from that thinking unless he can be convinced it will literally benefit Sho to think otherwise. If he encourages Sho to get along with people, it is so he can exist without more oversight rather than to make friends.

so no, Minazuki isn't his boyfriend.

He's...closer than a boyfriend, but he's also not a friend. It's a complicated situation. He's Sho's protector. 1000% dedicated only to his boy.

Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

In canon i would actually say Mitsuru should be a good friend to Sho. They've both been manipulated by Ikutsuki, saw him as a father figure, had their lives and abilities absolutely messed with for no reason other than his own purposes and when they no longer "worked right" he tried to throw them away. They have SO MUCH in common and could bond over it so much.

Always felt weird to me in Ultimax how Mitsuru never seemed to acknowledge how similar they were. She treats him like a child, or a threat....you could have been that child, Mitsuru. You could have been that threat without Akihiko and Shinji.

Like yes, I enjoy that canonically he has a friendship with Labrys and Narukami in the game. But they're the main characters.

I feel like Mitsuru would understand him on a deeper level like no one else can. I want them to hang out and just talk shit about their old father figure. They've even both taken on aspects of him into their own personalities. Mitsuru took his rather controlling sense of leadership to prepare for any angles (which in retrospect was not good), and Sho took his terrible sense of humor and lackadaisical approach to other's feelings.

Shuji Ikutsuki involved himself the most in their lives of any Persona user and they don't acknowledge it.

Minazuki had been nagging him for almost fifteen minutes when he decided to finally wander over to the food truck. It was supposed to be popular, wasn't it? He peers at Sho with a half amused smirk, "Hey, I've seen you around Vagastrom! This what you've been up to?" His stomach grumbles, he can't think of a pun for once. Minazuki makes a sound at the back of his head, somewhere between thanks and concern. "I was just reminded I haven't eaten in forever, whatcha got that's fast?"

Sho leans over the counter. "Here nearly every day. Special today's New Orleans gumbo. Got a bit less kick than the original recipe, but anything I've got is pre-prepped before open, so it'll all be quick."

In Persona canon, Sho's scar is caused by his forehead being the insertion site for the Plume of Dusk.

So what's up with the scar in the Tokyo Debunker AU, then?

Working story at current is that the first time Sho heard Minazuki in his head he was honestly scared. No one told him this might happen. None of the other ghouls have voices in their heads and act like he's crazy. None of the scientists believe him or think he must be suffering psychological side effects, but the voice is actively reacting to everything he does, like a person!

He attempted to claw the voice from his head for a good long while. When the marks he clawed healed, he did it again. He absolutely tore his own head open, by hand or by tool until Minazuki finally managed to calm him down enough to accept that the voice is here to help him.

He asked for a friend, someone to protect him, to keep him company, and the demon gave him that! He gave him Minazuki! He's never going to be alone again.

And also he has a kickass scar now.
