For some reason in every fic I’ve read he has a single mother? In mine his parents are happily married and his dad is an absolute cringe lord. He works from home on YouTube where he reviews toys, games, movies, and… actually I’m going to give you an excerpt from a story I’m never publishing. This was Chris coming out about his relationship with Josh for Christmas.

“You guys know, Josh, umm…”

“Joshua Washington? The boy taking our boy globetrotting since the fourth grade? The one who had you watching torture porn in our living room? Never heard of him.” Chris rolled his eyes while his mom snickered to herself, under-seasoning a few chops of pork she had in a pan at the stove while his dad and he unloaded the dishwasher.

“I’ve been hoping for more updates, you know. You two have been attached at the hip all this time, Malinda is damn near impossible to get on the phone these days, and don't get me started on Robert.” Aubrey shook her head. “How is he? You mentioned he had this big terrible meltdown last year then just… nothing.”

“I… I didn’t want to just put him on blast, mom. He’s been getting a lot better since we all started hanging out again, but I don’t want to just gossip about him.” Chris stacked a few plates to shelve in the cabinet while three were left aside for dinner. He’d left his appetite at the door.

His mother snorts, trying not to laugh. “Oh, and as we all know you just hate gossip, don’t you, Christopher?”

“Exactly!”

“Chris, every time you have you friends over you’re either trying to get a peek at their phones or getting right into their ear about the latest breakup news—“

“You’ve been eavesdropping?!”

“Oh, please! Who do you think you get it from?”

Chris scoffs, a hand clutching his chest to emphasize his very dramatic very justified indignation. “Un. Believable.”

“Believe it.” His father Nathan flashes him a devious grin before jaunting towards the table… head first, arms at his side.

Chris cringes. Here he is trying to prepare himself for the most nerve wracking and potentially life changing conversation he may ever have with his parents and he has to do so while his father Naruto runs to the dinner table. No one has it worse than Chris Hartley. No one.

Chris’ father is the estranged little brother of Charles Lonnit.

Chris routinely 3D prints his own stim toys, his favorite being a segmented snake that rattles when wiggled.

He’s an ambivert. He enjoys his time alone at home with his computer but doesn’t lose energy from being around people. When the right folks are around he absolutely thrives. He’s always at least like to have Josh or Ashley around to parallel play.

Has a brother-sister type antagonistic relationship with Jess. He teases her for her romantic exploits and the drama she gets mixed up in but he’ll always make time to fix her phone or laptop or help her customize her socials. He’s let her paint his nails without much fuss even though he personally doesn’t see the appeal. He always gets his nails painted the same exact green.

He’s fairly confident now but it took a lot of trial and error to bolster himself to where he is now. He used to be a squeaky little optimistic kid who everyone took advantage of until he met Josh in the third grade. He’d bring in treats and games to share but still get bullied and used pretty regularly. Then a problem child showed him how to make it all stop.

Chris used to cute nicknames as the mark of true best friendship. He used to dream up scenarios where his favorite characters would give him nicknames. When Josh first called him Cochise it was on a family trip that he’d been invited to and (inspired by a fic I’ll link someday in a referral post) after beating Beth in a snowball fight. Ngl folks, I’ve been trying to be subtle about it here, but this is definitely where Chris’ crush started. He just didn’t know it yet.

Josh and Chris bonded over horror in addition to John Wayne movies. Their combined favorite is Scream. On various Halloweens they went as Billy (Josh) and Stu (Chris) together. Sometimes they’d have a Sydney (normally Ashley when they were younger and on one or two occasions Sam later on), but usually it was just these two doing this…

Scream’s only competition is Heart Eyes which is the perfect culmination of Chris’ interests and Josh’s. It’s a horror romcom. And it’s so fucking good and in this essay I—

Chris has made Josh watch so many romcoms. He also likes romantic dramas like Cruel Intentions. His favorite romcon is The Girl Next Door.

As mentioned in my pet post he has a Russian shorthair named Cujo — a feisty lil lady cat.

Chris our HC programs video games instead of apps. He’s been making games since he was a tween and submitting them to game jams and other competitions. He’s even had a few early titles played by maybe YouTubers… he’s embarrassed by this. He doesn’t want to talk about how bad they were. He lightens up when they’re used as memes among the friend group.

Sam makes him go hiking with her to get him out of the house. He turns red immediately and whines the entire time. She’s very much apart of how he’s managed to stay fit despite a steady diet of monster energy drinks and pizza. He’s so dramatic about being made to walk in the woods with her, she makes him give her his phone and everything so he has incentive to keep up with her.

Chris finds a lot of comfort and beauty at the beach. I will not be elaborating.

Here’s the slightly controversial take: His and Ashley’s crushes were manufactured by the rest of the group but especially Josh and Sam. They’d never thought of each other like that until the others out the idea in their head first and prior they’d just been especially good friends. Josh was so insistent though and… he started to see the appeal. They spent more time together and lo and behold he did end up crushing on her. But never enough to want to rock the boat. We all know Chris is against pissing and getting off the pot.

I can’t stress enough though how much he cares about her. It’s just not built to last in my lore.

Chris is constantly watching his clothes go missing due to Josh stealing his flannels and tees. He doesn’t mind though he half heartedly pretends to.

Chris is farsighted.

He’s bonded a bit with Matt over romcoms and Matt may or may not have converted Chris into an appreciator of musical theater… but he ain’t never admitting it. Their combined favorite is Moulin Rouge.

Chris, like Josh, mimics Mike in social situations. Little things in his case like how he stands, moves, and occasionally tries to laugh more like him. It’s because so far aside from maybe Emily Mike is the only neurotypical person in the friend group. Mostly because writing neurotypicals is hard.

I think that’s enough because I literally can’t remember anything else right now.

I realized this doodle in Hannah’s diary was not in the original game, and now I’m curious about it.

I thought it was Sam, Josh, and Beth initially since those are the people close to Hannah (and the little guy in the middle has Josh’s energy lol). But now I’m thinking it’s Sam, Matt, and Ashley since those are the people mentioned in the entry. Wish Hannah was a better artist. 😂
