So I just picked up another Vorkosigan book (having inhaled the first 8 or 9 books several months ago), and I dont know if it's that I've been away or that this series just keeps gaining momentum, but I am here to tell you the PLOTTING on these bad boys is THE TIGHTEST SHIT. Listen. Every time I pick up one of these books I underestimate it. somehow!!!! I say to myself "ah yes, this will be merely good." AND THEN IT KNOCKS MY SOCKS OFF. it's not just the plotting. It's the fact that this woman UNDERSTANDS PEOPLE SO GODDAMN GOOD. And she's like. Genuinely progressive about it. do NOT be fooled by the archaic language. she's got THE SPIRIT in a MAJOR way. And in my (huge metropolitan) library's app, where you borrow nothing without waiting 4-50 weeks, her stuff is TRAGICALLY always available. Please help me create hold times for these books! You'll thank me!!!
#lois mcmaster bujold#I have not read her scifi#but can confirm for the Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls#I have read them so many times#wonderful books#brilliantly crafted

Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Round 2
Book summaries and submitted endorsements below:
The Murderbot Diaries series (All Systems Red, Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy, Network Effect, Fugitive Telemetry, System Collapse, and other stories) by Martha Wells
Endorsement from submitter: "Asexual and agender main character. In later books side characters are revealed to be in poly relationship."
"As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure."
In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid--a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.

The Masquerade Series (The Traitor Baru Cormorant, The Monster Baru Cormorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant) by Seth Dickinson
Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon.
The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They’ll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She’ll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she’ll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free.
In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu.
But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full.

I do mean imposing the pages! That site looks fantastic, thank you very much, I'll have to give it a go.
I'm not doing anything fancy - just projects for me. So I've just been using ms word. It works well enough... until I needed signatures for miniatures.
I really like the creativity in your book covers btw, you make some really excellent books.
Hi, I saw your miniature fic-binding (very nice) and I was wondering how you went about formatting the text? This is something I've struggled with for miniatures and so far I've ended up doing it manually - took forever the first time.
Thank you! If you mean imposing the pages, I use https://momijizukamori.github.io/bookbinder-js/ -- for this one I used the "petite" option under "wacky small layouts" and printed on A5 paper, but there are options that will work for A4/letter paper too.
For the typesetting and book layout itself I use Affinity Publisher and set the page size to the actual page size of the finished book, and then just work as I normally do, although there's a lot more manual adjustment of hyphenation etc.
#this will make any future miniature projects so much easier#I wish I'd known about this sooner#I don't even want to try and estimate how many hours it took to fully format my first miniature#bookbinding#I'm afraid I don't have all the right terms for setting it up for printing so I've just been using formatting as a catch all term

I did this to help illustrate a point I'm making in a different post, but I feel it's relevant above and beyond that specific context.
