Puck Luck Fest 2024 — a hrpf magical realism prompt meme
and with that, authors are now live!! i'd like to thank everyone who participated in the first year of the fest one last time. whether it was by writing fic or submitting prompts or beta'ing someone's fic or reading the fics once they went live — i'm so glad so many people came together and had fun with all the magic hrpf has to offer! and it's not too late to still get in on the fun by reading the now non-anonymous fics & dropping a kudos or a comment if you feel up to it 💖
i'd love to be back again next off-season but until then, happy reading everyone!!
#hockey rpf#hrpf#once again your mod would like to apologize for being sick & the way that's affected the schedule of this week a bit#thank y'all for bearing through that AND for participating <3

remember that authors are going to be revealed on friday july 26, so there's still a little more fun in store for everyone.
happy reading!!
#hockey rpf#hrpf#fic fest#i know i said yesterday they wouldn’t go live before 10am cdt but i need to pass out & can’t guarantee a quick nap#everyone go check out the wonderful fics people wrote for the fest!!

also, a reminder while i'm online — if your work is currently a draft please be sure to un-draft it!!!
i can not check it over to make sure it meets the fest rules & approve it to be included in the collection if it's a draft. you've still got some time left in this soft deadline period but don't forget your drafts!!

what time do fics go live tomorrow?
they're scheduled to go live at 10am cdt — but, full disclosure, i am sick right now so my internal schedule isn't as reliable as i'd like for it to be. we're still aiming for 10am (it definitely won't be before then!) but you might need to give me an hour or two of grace.
super sincere apologies in advance if things do end up pushed back a little!
#ask#i do at least get to look forward to reading everyone's fics tomorrow while i lay in bed & wish for death over this cold!!!

hi there - so excited for puckluck to go live soon!!! just to double and triple check, the due date this monday is at 11:59pm CDT, correct? (AKA if i'm in PDT, i have until 9:59pm on Monday evening to submit my finalized fic)? i just want to make 100% sure i don't miss the deadline!
you've got it!! i wouldn't stress the times of day, though, especially if you're not in the central timezone and you'd have to do time math for it; fics are due at the end of this coming monday but i will probably not be closing the collection for new fics until fics go live on wednesday. i can almost guarantee you won't miss the deadline.
the day between the official deadline and fics going live is great for double checking what your work looks like in ao3 & doing final edits, but if you find yourself panicking at midnight on monday — don't! if you submit a fic to the collection after 11:59 cdt, it will still be approved for the fest as long as it fulfills the rest of the fest's rules. i am super flexible here. if someone finishes their fic after fics go live but before author reveals & still wants to submit it to the fest, i'll probably re-open submissions for them as long as they reach out and ask so they can be included!!
#ask#hrpf#hockey rpf#time blindness is Real for your mod so idk if time math is even a hurdle for other people but the gist is still: please don't stress it!!

Hello, lovely mods - so I was scrolling through the ao3 page and I was reading some of the unclaimed prompts while I did and realized that one of them has the same sort of a baseline premise as what I've been writing for my own fic. The details, terminology and suggested ideas that they wrote for their prompt are different than what I've been doing, but now I'm a little torn.
So, my question is: is it okay for me to keep going as I am or should I claim that prompt for this? I don't want to seem like I'm co-opting someone else's prompt/idea, but I'm also unsure as to whether what I'm doing would really satisfy the prompters request despite the same basic premise being in both. Thanks for your help in advance!
if you're unsure if the fic you're working on would satisfy the prompter's request, then i would just continue on as you are without claiming the prompt!!
it sounds like there's just enough differences between your fic & their prompt that trying to meet in the middle would be an unnecessary compromise. you came up with your idea organically so just keep on!!
you can always reference the prompt you saw in the notes of your fic as a way of saying 'if you wanted a fic like that, you might like a fic like this' but that's absolutely not necessary. and in the end, it could be a happy surprise for the initial prompter if they end up seeing a fic in the collection that's slightly similar to their prompt by happenstance — which i think would be the best outcome for all involved 💖

just one more month!!
hey everyone!! i just wanted to drop a quick reminder that fics are due next month on monday, july 22nd. that means there's still plenty of time to keep working on your fics or to start something new — and remember, if you missed the prompting & sign-up period but want to participate in the fest, you can absolutely still claim a prompt and be part of the fun when fics go live on july 24th.
fics will stay unposted & unrevealed until they go live, so whenever you're done and satisfied with a fic you can go ahead and post it to the collection! even if you're still tweaking or working through minor updates and edits, you can post it to the collection so it'll be ready to go when fics go live next month. as always, more information can be found via the fest's rules & faq; and please feel free to reach out here if you have any further questions about the fest, or need help with something while we're in the home stretch. i hope everyone's having fun!!
remaining schedule:
Fics due: July 22, 2024
Fics go live: July 24, 2024
Authors revealed: July 26, 2024
#hockey rpf#hrpf#fic fest#hockey fest#technically tomorrow is the exact one month out date#but i’m posting this now because getting it out on a game day just feels Right#hope everyone’s writing is going well!!!!!

hello! are we allowed to claim a prompt now or in the coming days even though sign ups have closed if we feel like we can fulfill it in time?
yes, absolutely!!! this is my favorite loophole for prompt fests on AO3 ........ technically you need to have submitted a prompt to be officially signed-up, but if you go ahead & claim any prompt (even the first prompt of our fest, which is a total 'do whatever you want here' free space!), it'll show up as one of your claims when you go to post on AO3. as long as you select that prompt when posting your fic, it will be submitted to the collection; and as long as you follow the other rules of the fest, it'll be approved!

Hello! Thank you so much for organizing this fest, I'm super excited to see what everyone's working in a couple of months! I was just wondering if there were any guidelines about sharing snippets/excerpts of a fic we're making for the fest as we're working on it. I don't want to accidentally break a rule!
i'm glad you're excited! i definitely can't wait to see what people end up creating for the fest.
as of right now there's no rules against putting out snippets!! i know that posting excerpts or sharing them with friends in a chat is a big part of some people's writing process as a means of getting feedback & motivation. it will mean that your fic won't be 100% anonymous before author reveals (if the people who've seen your snippets also see the fic posted to the collection!) but as long as you're not posting a majority of your work before sharing it to the collection, feel free to carry on as normal.
in that same vein — sharing work with someone to beta read before author reveals is also 100% okay. again, people might be able to guess that your work is your work if you thank your usual beta in your notes, but doing what you need to feel comfortable and confident in posting to the fest takes priority here. just use your best judgement!

Can you “double” the magic (i.e., soul bond AU where it was brought on by one character wishing to be able to see their future?)
absolutely! i think doing something like that would be super fun. there's probably tons of ways you could double up on magic if you wanted — and why stop at doubling up! triple up!! keep stacking the magic as much as you can!!!
wishbaby 'verse where the parents are proximity cursed for the first six months of the baby's life, hanahaki fic but hanahaki only affects people with fae or elven ancestry and they thought they were one of the few non-supernatural players on the team, team bond AU but the bond exists because the mascots are all sentient magic users locked in a proxy war with each other via the players, some kind of combo dæmon/shifter/soulmate AU where every person can shift but only into the animal form of their soulmate's dæmon, time-loop but they're werewolves, time-loop but one's a werewolf and the other's a vampire, time-loop but one's a werewolf and the other's a vampire and the time-loop was caused by clashing magical courtship rituals, etc. the possibilities are truly endless!!

Question for the fest! Can multiple people claim the same prompt?
definitely! there's no guarantee that everyone who claims a prompt will fill it; and even if they do, everyone's fic will put their own unique spin on what was prompted. if you see a prompt that speaks to you, claim it!! write for it!! share the ensuing fic to the fest's collection!!

sign-ups close in one week!
with sign-ups closing at the end of the day on april 12th, we're nearing the end of the fest's prompting & sign-up period! we're also nearing the end of the regular season … there's no better time to add a little magic in your hrpf. that means there's no better time to check out all the amazing prompts people have already shared! and if you haven't signed up yet, now's also the perfect time to go ahead and submit some prompts of your own. the parameters for this fest are pretty broad — if you love reading or writing hockey fic with a little bit of magic sprinkled in, sign up! this is the fest for you!!
reminder — you don't need to claim a prompt to participate in the fest. and if you want to leave some prompts but aren't sure if you'll be able to write for a the fest, that's also perfectly fine! more information can be found via the fest's rules & faq. have fun!!

is it okay if instead of writing a fic i submit a short comic strip/photoset of my own drawings that fits a prompt?
absolutely, that sounds so cool!! the fest does have a minimum word count for fics (1,000 words) & no equivalent rule for comics/photosets or other forms of non-fic fanwork (podfics, fanart, etc.); to keep things fair, I just ask that you put, at minimum, an equivalent amount of effort into any non-fic fanworks as it would take to write 1,000 words. for example, I'd ask people not to submit a ten minute warmup sketch to the fest as no one is finishing a 1,000 fic in ten minutes.
other than that, as long as you post your fanwork to AO3 so it can be included in the fest collection & follow the other general rules, any fanwork would be more than welcome!!

Hi, Jonas Johansson isn't an available tag, can you please add him so I can tag him in my prompt? Please and thanks! :)
Hi! The fest is currently set up to allow for canonical character & relationship tags for whatever the prompt's given fandom is, which in our case has been either men's hockey rpf or women's hockey rpf. The way that AO3 canonizes tags means that while fics & prompts centering on Jonas Johansson would be MORE than welcome, he's not considered canonical because there aren't enough fics with him tagged as a character yet!
In this case, and in any other cases where you would like to put out a prompt for a character or relationship that isn't yet canonized on AO3, I'd suggest putting your character or ship of choice (in this case, Jonas Johansson) in the body of the prompt! You can either do this by opening the prompt with his name (+ any other names relevant to your prompt) on its own separate line, as it would appear if it were able to be a character tag, or by making it clear in your prompt that you want him involved by writing something like 'Jonas Johansson finds out he's a witch.'
#ask#iirc you can also get around the canonical fandom tag requirement by not picking a fandom! but you're then still bound by canonical ao3 tag

Puck Luck Fest 2024 — a hrpf magical realism prompt meme!
let your characters live in a world where wishes made on the stanley cup come true! stick 'em in a time loop! make the hockey gods real, and have them curse some guys for real! we are using the hrpf fandom's interpretation of magical realism for this fest, where most things about characters' lives are the same. except ... there's a truth curse, or soulbonds, or a wishbaby, or someone transforms into an animal, etc. fic with a more urban fantasy flavor (everything's the same except that werewolves or vampires or witches, etc. are real) is also totally welcome in this fest. basically — any prompt or fic where the premise is 'hockey + some brand of magic' is welcome here! you can get as high concept as you want and develop lore and rules for magic to tell your story. or you can also keep things lowkey, and let your characters be completely shocked to find out they live in a world where their captain gets de-aged after a bad game.

Fics must be complete and at least 1,000 words, with no maximum word count. If you choose to write something as part of an existing series, it must be able to work as a standalone while authors are unrevealed.
Some element of the fic must differ from 'canon' in a magical way. This can be accomplished through magical realism or urban fantasy or any other method you have in mind, so long as the end product is hockey rpf with magic in it.
You don’t have to claim a prompt in order to participate if you don’t need the inspiration to get started.
Prompts or fills that feature players who have been credibly accused or convicted of sexual assault or domestic abuse will not be allowed. Your mod doesn't know every player in the league who this may apply to, so there isn't a definitive list — just be reasonable.
Do not submit any AI-generated writing as either a prompt or a fill for the fest. If your fill includes artwork or another visual component like cover art or image-based scene break banners, those also cannot be AI-generated.
Please make appropriate use of the archive warnings (or make use of the “Choose Not To Warn” option) & be sure to adhere to standard tagging conventions. If certain tags will spoil the contents of your fic and might trigger someone, put clear additional content warnings in the notes of your fic.
Have fun! And please feel free to contact us on tumblr with any additional questions.

Puck Luck Fest 2024: FAQ
What is the schedule?
Prompts & Sign-Ups Open: March 22, 2024
Prompts & Sign-Ups Close: April 12, 2024
Fics due: July 22, 2024
Fics go live: July 24, 2024

How are we defining magical realism?
The bare bones answer, as laid out in our intro post, is that any fic with a premise that is 'hockey RPF + some brand of magic' is welcome here! We're not holding anybody to a hyper strict literary definition of magical realism. Bring on your niche & almost HRPF-specific brands of magic, like wishbabies, all variety of hockey curses (truth curses! proximity curses! bodyswaps! animal transformation! etc.), the hockey gods, and Stanley Cup wishes. Fic that leans more supernatural or urban fantasy is also welcome, so if you've been dying to write a fic where a team's entire roster is made up of different kinds of magical creatures, now's your chance. We're also here for other kinds of magical twists — like soulmate AUs, hanahki fic, dæmon AUs, and whatever else you can dream of.
Is this an exchange fest?
This is a prompt challenge! You do not have to write based on anyone else's request & will not be receiving a fic based directly on your own request, unless someone claims and fills a prompt you leave. AO3 has a useful tutorial for participating in prompt challenges that you can take a look at for further information.
How do I participate?
This fest is run through AO3, so you will need an AO3 account to participate and sign up to the Puck Luck Fest collection by leaving a prompt!
Do I have to claim a prompt?
Nope! It can be helpful to see the sorts of fic others would be interested in reading, but ultimately they’re just meant for inspiration. If you already have a fic you want to write that fits the parameters of the fest, go ahead and write it! The first prompt in the collection is a kind of free space that anyone can claim if they would like to add a fic to the fest that doesn't explicitly relate to any other prompts.
Why do I have to leave at least one prompt to sign up?
Prompts are fun! No one's obliged to fill a prompt to participate in the fest, but prompts are a great way of offering up inspiration to people — especially when the topic of the fest is as broad as 'magical realism.' If you have a pairing you’d love to read or a trope you think would be fun to see, now’s your chance to suggest it!
Can I submit a prompt without filling one myself?
Yes! Absolutely! You can submit prompts without even the intention of writing something for the fest — if you want to suggest the sort of fic you’d like to read, go for it!
Can I claim multiple prompts? Can I claim a prompt for Pairing X to write Pairing Y?
You are more than welcome to claim multiple prompts! If you have a fic in mind that could reasonably be seen as a fill for two prompts, only claim one one them. And be sure to only claim pairing-specific prompts if you intend to fill them with that pairing.
I have more questions!
Please send them to us here on tumblr!
