Violence is never the answer. Unless of course, the question is “Who soaked Davey Jacobs?” And, unless of course, Jack Kelly is the one doing the asking. Or Jack walks in on Davey getting the crap beat out of him. He responds accordingly.

A/N: So my bestie introduced me to newsies and i truly have been a changed person and not known sanity since. As requested by the loml @jlmjlmjlm in which we were facetiming and talking about newsies fic and the conversation turned into: Jess: … why haven’t you written Javey fic for me yet? (Important context: I have never written newsies fic) Me: uh what do you want? Jess: *giggling* I want someone to beat the SHIT out of Davey Me: understood. In this conversation, she also asked for: *Hurt/Comfort (but like, not cheesy) (props to her for thinking i can pull that off though) *Found family *Getting together This is the result [LAW AND ORDER SOUND EFFECT] DUN DUN (ily and know an attempt was made)

Ironically, it had been Race who first used it to refer to Davey, after he’d pointed out Race’s extra hand of Aces in a round of cards. It took some getting used to, but now Davey quite enjoys the nickname given to him by the newsies. It’s supposed to be an acknowledgment, of sorts, of his alleged way with words. 

Granted, he’s had the privilege to be schooled, and granted, he is known for frequenting the library on summers off, but he doesn’t know if he’d consider himself the voice of the strike, as Katherine so eloquently put it in her newspaper article.

She’d called Jack the face to Davey’s voice in that same article, and while them being seen as a unit twists Davey’s stomach all up into knots, it’s not a sentiment he can bring himself to agree with. It’s not a title he really feels comfortable giving to himself.

Jack, really, is the one who takes center stage in a crowd. Despite his nickname, most of the time Davey is rather content to just sit on the sidelines and spectate as the chaos of thirty unsupervised kids unfolds.

Today, chaos has taken the name of Racetrack Higgins.

What if I said Jegulus and Wolfstar, but it’s Sirius and James trying to deny/get away from the fact that they’re in love and way too codependent with their best friend, that they try to distract themselves with others.

It could be a fake-dating situation where prongsfoot trying to make eachother jealous, or it could be genuine “I can’t handle the fact that I like him, so I’ll date (insert respective name).”

In the fake dating situation, Regulus + Remus would tolerate it, and eventually realize they’re falling for eachother- in which it’s already sort of set up as a reverse fake-dating… bc ofc they don’t know eachother are fake dating, like Remus starts falling for Regulus while he thinks Regulus is dating James, while Regulus is fake dating James so James can make Sirius, who’s fake-dating Remus, jealous (dang that was a lot.)

That’s the most “happy” ending

In the more angsty one, where they’re not “fake dating”, Remus + Regulus probably genuinely like Prongsfoot, and when they finally break (because they’re too codependent to stay mad/apart/pretend to like someone else from eachother for too long), Moonwater has to deal with the fallout, and eventually find solace in eachother., which ofc leads to actual Moonwater. Maybe in the nice world they help out Prongsfoot figure out their somewhat-toxic situationship, maybe they let them sort themselves out, who knows

thinking about how in czech the nicknames 'padfoot' and 'prongs' were translated as 'tichošlápek' and 'dvanácterák' so if i were to translate the shipname prongsfoot into czech it'd probably be something like 'dvanáctšlápek'.

which,,, well,,, sounds dangerously close to 'dvanáct šlapek' literally meaning 'twelve whores' 😭

sirius who can only watch longingly as he wraps him arms around himself tightly as he sleeps to simulate what he believes james would feel like

james who grew up associating love and belonging with physical affection

james who, when nonverbal/upset, can only be soothed through touch (e.g. hugs, hand holding etc.)

james who starts to cry when people hug him when upset, yes because he’s sad, but also because the one person he wishes he could hold/would hold him, can’t.

sirius who one day, after a howler from walburga, climbs hesitantly into james bed and pokes him softly with the tip of his finger.

sirius who whispers softly to james as he turns over if he can try and sleep next to him

james who tries to play it cool but nods his head so viciously that he starts to see stars.

sirius who only smiles shyly as he opens the other end of the duvet, to climb under and lay on the pillow next to james

james who pushes himself as far into the wall as possible, trying for it to not be noticeable so none of his body parts are at risk of touching sirius

sirius who notices but says nothing, he doesn’t want to ruin whatever this is

prongsfoot who fall asleep together, on the farthest sides of the bed from each other

prongsfoot who wake up, limbs completely engulfed in each others, legs on hips, arms around shoulders

sirius drooling onto james collar bone and james snoring into sirius hair.

sirius who wakes up with an unfamiliar weight on his chest but a familiar smell of vanilla body wash wafting through his nose

sirius who tenses in anticipation of the pain who has become his loyal companion.

sirius who tears up when he realizes it’s not there, all he can feel is the sturdy arms of james wrapped around his waist and the warmth of his neck as sirius cuddles closer

james who can only smile softly as he pretends to be asleep as sirius sniffles softly and snuggles into him, james who squeezes him just that bit tighter as they both drift back to sleep

Fun Story to Share.

I got my (now 18-year-old) daughter into Ao3 back in 2021. I taught her she should always comment - even if the fic looks old or abandoned or whatever. She did.

Well - she got this email this morning:

The fic was written in 2014 and essentially abandoned.

Bethy read and reviewed in 2021 (and was actually the only person who had commented at all).

Today in 2025 - the final chapter was posted by the author and this was her reply to Bethy’s comment.
