How do we feel about Patroclus being associated with cows? Specifically a calf? I get this from the description of Menelaus, poised over his body and protecting it from book 17

wanted to try a new way of thumbnailing with updating achilles and pat designs (mostly their clothes). Yes, the legs are the only thing rendered bc I wanted to practice that too.
#hey achilles is less asinine to look at compared to his first character sheet#achilles#patroclus#patrochilles#tagamemnon

Patroclus’ Murmurings
First: “Is clinging to a memory what keeps the soul from fading? Why then, would that I could simply leave that glimmer of my past behind, for there is nothing for me here…”
“It makes no difference to me either way. I spent so much of my short life alone, but now, what is this lingering and meaningless experience, where for eternity all I’ve to think on is a few bright glimpses that I spent with him, not by myself?”
“Why does the soul remain, after the body bleeds, and dies, and turns to ash? Is this the final cruelty of the gods? Or evidence, perhaps, that we have some immortal stuff in us ourselves.”
“…Why was I brought here, to be left alone? Where did you go…what did you do?”
“…You’re wallowing away somewhere, the same as I, but where…? And why not here?”
“…But you must hate me so, to have abandoned me among these noble champions and kings…”
“Is clinging to a memory what keeps the soul from fading? Why then, would that I could simply leave that glimmer of my past behind, for there is nothing for me here…”
“…Truly the must the gods despise us, each in turn, to have divided us like this…”
“Is this how you decided to repay me? Why, you must think that I abandoned you, in life, when I went off to war without you, is that it? You think I had a choice?”
“…Where are you now, I wonder, and what thoughts are running through your mind…?”
“…So then, I’ll just keep waiting here, I guess. No time to lose, hahaha.”
“…What more could I have even done? Could I have swayed you, any other way? I tried, with all my might, with all my heart, you must know that, and still, it was never enough…”
“…To think, he could have…none of this, it didn’t have to be…”
“What qualifies a man to this eternity in so-called paradise? Even in death, there is no justice. I knew so many peaceful, decent men, but none of course are here. Instead, it is the warriors. The kings. The slayers. Great men? The standard for greatness is low, indeed.”
“…It’s all forgettable, with just a single drink, and yet, I always hesitate…”
“…You chose to die in glory, not to live in peace…and all for what? Such a waste, all for your foolish pride, that you should care more to be remembered by those you shall never know than to be loved…”
“…What we were once, I wonder if it’s but a falsely ringing memory of mine…”
“…The Fates decided this for us, I guess, and so…who are we to complain…?”
“When we were both alive, I…thought you were invincible. I knew of no one, nothing stronger, other than the love we shared. Was I deceived, in thinking this of you, of us?”
“…He was always, you were always such a stubborn fool…”
“…Truly must the gods despise us, each in turn, to have divided us like this…”
“…I ought to have been cast into the meadows of sprawling Asphodel, not here, not with these kings and braggarts. What am I doing here? Waiting, lingering, transfixed on something that was never mine, something I never had…then, what am I to do?”
“You made the choice, not me, and you prolonged that war, when you knew just as well as anyone you could have ended it! But you refused. And now I’m here. And you? You’re somewhere else…” “…So damned obstinate, about every detail…always so unyielding, to your doom…”
“…I thought hat I was lost, just…wandering, but, not even moving, just…being here…”

Pitiless man, you are no son it seems of Thetis or the horseman Peleus, rather the grey sea and the stony cliffs bore you, with heart of granite.

Everyone redraws the arm injury kylix scene, but what about the Pompeii fresco scene where Patroclus’ clothing is wrapped around Achilles’ arm making them literally and metaphorically connected? Observe:

The genuinely interesting part about it to me is not just that Patroclus is nearly ass out (because that IS interesting and I’ll explain why in a sec), but also the way that it’s draped and pinned in place—if they become disconnected, and/or if Patroclus were to let go, the fabric would fall off and Patroclus would be fully nude (something something about being exposed for wearing your boyfriend’s clothes.) On that note, I’ve read art analyses which point out Patroclus being exclusively or exceptionally nude in art as a metaphorical representation of his exposure & vulnerability, which symbolizes his death in the Iliad:

This was written in the context of the aforementioned kylix art, but I think whoever said this was onto something because of compositions like this:

Note that Patroclus is the only character whose clothes are see-through, exposing his legs and buttocks; and the drape has also fallen from his shoulders, exposing his back.

But looking at the kylix art itself for a moment… apparently the original cultural context of kylikes like this one was they were used for drinking parties where draining the wine often revealed humorous or sexual scenes to titillate the drinker.
So as much as everyone likes to talk about heroic nudity in Ancient Greek art and the metaphorical nature of exposure & vulnerability & mortality… I think these things can be true, AND it can also be true that the kylix is literally erotic fanart???? Erotic hurt/comfort ship fanart! lol. Like the way Patroclus’ legs surround Achilles, and the fact that both of them have see-through clothes (yes Patroclus’ genitals are exposed but lest we overlook this detail: so are Achilles’!)

And it’s also often pointed out how the two of them are drawn with unusually big eyes compared to similar art, in order to enhance the pathos of this scene (so you’re telling me this is erotic MOE fanart?!)
So yeah… I think we need to bring this back, where we draw horny fanart of our ships at the bottom of drinking cups. It’s kind of genius in that you’re practically guaranteed to get sloshed because you want to free those lewds (I want to make these for real WHO’S WITH ME WHO THE FUCK IS W—)
Anyways, in conclusion:

It may be argued that artwork depicting Patroclus as nude is a metaphorical representation of his fate in the Iliad, but it also has the secondary effect of making him a certified tHiRsT tRaP, in this essay I will— *GUNSHOT*
#patroclus being depicted as nude to show his vulnerability while achilles being depicted as nude to show his partial divinity#someone please come hurt me#achillies#patroclus#patrochilles#tagamemnon
