What Is Photo Masking In Photoshop? Learn Photoshop Masking
What is Photo Masking in Photoshop? This is a Photoshop Masking tool that can be found in the Photo Masking tool option in the Command Central (Window) option in Photoshop. You can use this to create a mask for your image so that you can create an image of your subject such as a portrait or an image of your face. You can also use a simple mask on a solid color background to create a basic "mask".
What is image masking in Photoshop? This is basically what is happening when you use this tool: you are creating a copy of your image. You create the copy by selecting New from the Edit menu and then choosing Image Mask from the drop down menu. You will then see two layers with the copies of your image in the layers palette. Choose Top and then choose Bottom to cancel the bottom layer.

What is photo masking in Photoshop? The way this is useful is if you are working on a complex photo such as a photograph of a moving subject, retouching photos that have been taken using a flash gun or even retouching old photographs that may have been damaged. One example of using the masking technique with images is to create a mask of the subject before you have finished adjusting the background or the colours of the photograph so that you are left with a nice neutral colour on which to make the changes you are making.
How do I use the tool in Photoshop? To use the layer mask tool in Photoshop, you need to be using the Background tab. Click on the Adjustments tab if you haven't already done so. Click on the first layer and then click the Brush tool to select a soft brush.
After you have chosen the brush type you wish to use click on the size bar so that Photoshop will give you options for the size of the image you want to place inside the mask. Click on the colour tool to add a colour to the image that is exactly the colour of the background. If you want to change the background of the image just click on it and pick another colour. You can also make changes to the values of the colours and how bright or dark they are. Click OK when you are finished to undo what you have done.
You will now have a copy of your original image that you can use in creating a new image. However, there is one problem. That problem is the layer you used is not the same as the layer you wanted to use. In Photoshop this is called a duplicate layer.
How do I fix it? You need to go to the layer palette. Once there you will see an icon with a question mark next to it. Click on the arrow so that Photoshop can show you what layer you have used. In the palette you will see the red arrow indicating the layer you used.
The final result should be a match between what you originally had in your image and the mask you created. To see what else you can do to alter the result, experiment with adjusting the brightness and contrast levels of your image. This way you will get a photo that you can be happy with. If you are not happy with what you have done, save your work and try again. Hopefully what is photo masking in Photoshop will help you enhance your images!
