Maybe John Finnemore will give it a try and finish the script? Afterall, his minisode "A Companion To Owls" was pure genius.

Today's Vanity Fair interview with Anna Sawai: 'Q: We are led to believe that Mariko’s husband is dead earlier in the season. It’s revealed he survived, unbeknownst to the other characters, and that moment where we the audience see him again is a bit devastating—because we’ve just spent all this time with Mariko and Blackthorne enjoying this idyllic, romantic time together. A: I wish we got to see a little bit more of the happy times of them together, yeah. But we are covering the whole book in 10 episodes, and there’s only so much that we can cover. Episode four is very special in that way.' Free me of this cursed life 😭
Me: 🤡
When reviewers said that the show minimized the romance, I didn't think they meant obliterated it completely. So Mariko legit broke things off with her whole "I'm not talking to you anymore" speech.

I knew things weren't going to get better with John and Mariko. They never should have bothered with their relationship if they were barely going to address it and then let it flop for four straight episodes. I guess John will just sail back to England.
Now I understand why the dude has been asking for his ship back every five minutes. He's just getting used by everyone, and his only confidant and friend has been nothing but cold to him since she hit it and quit it, what, months ago at this point? Poor lad.
I tend to agree. I think if this was meant to be a political show they should've never pursued this romantic angle. The only contributing storyline is the Buntaro drama and that still could've happened with their relationship being platonic. Now it just feels like an abandoned plot line and in my opinion is the most glaring mistake the show has, especially from the writing aspect. Most people won't care about the romance and I totally get that, but personally it always irks me and makes me feel disrespected when I give my time to a show and there's no payoff.
At best, there will be some kind of ham-fisted resolution into this next episode and it'll just feel weird.

"She (Kiku) had not been prepared for what soon became obvious: clearly the Anjin-san desired the Lady Toda, though he hid it well as any civilized person could hide it. This in itself was not surprising, for the Lady Toda was most beautiful and accomplished and, most important, she alone could talk with him. What astounded her was that she was certain the Lady Toda desired him equally, if not more." - Shōgun by James Clavell

will we even get those 9 days on a boat...
I will settle for one night at this point. Freaking teasing and stringing us along like this for 3 episodes straight with only 3 left. RUDE.

I’ve been loving the show so far. It’s been a breath of fresh air in recent television. I haven’t read the books (but plan to!!!) but yah episode 7 felt so stagnant. I don’t need constant action but it feels like nothing really happened. And I’m mourning the passion Mariko and John had, even in just glances. It’s like they were never even interested in each other :/
While the show is still brilliant in many respects, I'm really missing the pacing of the first 4-5 episodes. Ever since episode 5, we've just been stuck in Ajiro and all the characters either want to die or are miserable. A few, specifically Blackthorne, have been stagnant in their development. He's stalled out completely. There's so much that happens to him there and he's still just standing around yelling about his ship.
John and Mariko. It's clear to me now that the showrunners really wanted to subdue the romance between them to focus on other things. It's a creative choice for sure, but I personally think it takes a lot of the heart out of the story Clavell wrote and cheapens its ending if it does indeed end the way the book ends. It's unfortunate that they are portraying them this way now after we had such wonderful development in the first four episodes. And to do it to give more time to a non-existent love triangle in the eyes of Mariko is really annoying. They're are spending WAY too much time on Buntaro's constant whining, which makes zero sense since they haven't done this for any other subplot in the book.

Shut up. 🙄

im not a book reader of shogun, but your comments/issues abt the episode are definitely piquing my interest. im now reading some reviews/recaps of the episode that could explain why i felt kinda empty after this episode???? i know some are saying character work remains excellent but this is the first time i’m feeling we’re kinda stagnant. and so far it’s a tad less positively reviewed compared to previous episodes
Yeah, this was the weakest one, in my opinion, and the one that most deviated from the book. I think the character work for some has been excellent and meh to unrecognizable for others. Mariko and Blackthorne being two big ones. This heavy focus on Buntaro's temper tantrums is ridiculous when there are so many other important things to focus on. Mariko is full emo 24/7, ugh. But really the most obvious hole in the show right now for us book readers from episode 6,7, and probably the rest of the season is how subdued the core romantic relationship is. In addition, they've now started killing characters off that don't die in the book which is always going to piss me off.
I know, I know, alot of people didn't tune into this show to watch a romance and while I understand that and have no problem with it, it doesn't change the fact that it's a crucial and driving element of the story and one that really ties things together in the end. So we book readers are just sitting here perplexed and frustrated. I'll see the show through and enjoy it for what we've been given, which is still some amazing filmmaking, but I think they're failing their source material in this latter half of the series. If they're going for historical accuracy, then maybe don't adapt a work of fiction that you then have to rework to make it so.

Shogun is failing its OTP
Like - there’s a 1200 page book that has everything in it to set this up right. And they are not doing it. I’m so fucking disappointed because every fucking show I get invested in finds a way to fuck up the main couple. Looks like Shogun is gonna do the same goddam thing. I’ll stick out the last three episodes, but it kind of ruins the whole thing for me as their story and the development of their relationship was the core of the book.
Whatever - one more disappointment to add to the list.
