GROUNDING IN WATERLOW PARK ~ A note on catharsis 2020
Part of “Touching Nature” an Environmental Art Therapy group show, Lauderdale House, Waterlow Park North London.
“Grounding in Waterlow Park- A Note on Catharsis 2020” is a photographic series part of an ongoing body of barefoot works, conceptual practises and mindful “walkshops” that I’ve been producing over the last few years exploring the physical, mental, emotional and physiological effects of grounding.
For “Touching Nature” I have chosen to produce some site-specific photographic visuals from videos made during a 2020 September afternoon spent Grounding in Waterlow Park. My intention for this show was for viewers to not only connect to the work visually but physically also by having a small patch of grass to stand on barefoot within the gallery. A viewing platform, also known as a small “tuft of earth” as it were - ultimately bringing the outside in.
However, with current restrictions this is not possible and to use this to my advantage I have produced other visuals using the same tuft of earth from Waterlow Park in another gallery setting. To take the place of this ‘viewing platform’ within Lauderdale House, in front of the main artwork you will see a small taped area on the floor. You are invited to mindfully stand in place, to close your eyes, take some deep breaths and visualise yourself barefoot on the cool, soft, earth. Visualise yourself touching nature, put yourself in the centre of this piece, imagine this is you before slowly opening your eyes, softening your gaze to view the main artwork.
