Is Bellator MMA becoming Pride FC?
http://ift.tt/1ZqDoGo
Is Bellator MMA becoming Pride FC? If so, that’s not a good thing because I’m not talking about Pride FC from it’s glory days. Back in September of last year I wrote an article about how Scott Coker would make Bellator great. Given his track record with Strikeforce I felt very strongly that he would […]

MMA (Almost) Legal in New York
http://ift.tt/1Rffege
Finally, after over seven years of effort, a bill to legalize MMA in New York has passed through the New York State Assembly. The bill still requires New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s signature before MMA is actually legal in the state. However, the governor inking the bill into law seems to be a simple […]

Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor 2 Nearing Finality, Contracts Reportedly Issued
http://ift.tt/1LJRGiV
It appears that momentum towards a rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor at UFC 200 is quickly building.
The latest report on the possibility of the fight is that it’s simply a matter of contracts being finalized.
“It’s not happening at a more natural 155 pounds. It’s happening at 170 pounds. The contracts are already out there and that’s what they want,” Ariel Helwani recently said on The MMA Hour, not revealing specific sources.
“(McGregor) is obsessed with the idea that he lost to Nate Diaz at 170 pounds, he feels like he should have won and he wants the same circumstances, the same rules, the same stipulations. He wants to do it again and prove that he is the better man.”
In addition to the report on The MMA Hour, while he fell short of confirming anything, Diaz himself sounded as if a rematch was coming together in some comments he made to Rolling Stone.
“I lost plenty of decisions and I’ve never got a rematch, to this day. So that’s crazy. Conor got worked over and now they’re saying, ‘rematch,’ which makes sense,” Diaz said. “I understand that. I just think it’s funny because, it’s like, Jose Aldo didn’t get a rematch.”
RELATED > Rafael dos Anjos and Frankie Edgar Are Not Enthralled by Possible McGregor vs. Diaz 2
While there are many people shaking their heads at the prospect of a rematch, when Diaz choked McGregor out in the second round of their first match-up at UFC 196, it appears that we’re heading closer and closer to the likelihood of a rematch.

New York Becomes Final State to Legalize MMA
http://ift.tt/1RybbgT
Hell might have just frozen over, as New York on Tuesday became the final state in the U.S. to legalize mixed martial arts.
While the bill to legalize MMA in New York (S05949A)has passed the State Senate for the past seven years, prior to 2016, it had never gotten to the Assembly floor for a vote. It finally found passage through the necessary committees – the Tourism, Arts, Parks and Sports Development Committee; the Codes Committee; the Ways and Means Committee; and the Rules Committee – before moving to the Assembly floor.
Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee spoke out against passage of the bill, encouraging her peers to join her in voting to continue the ban on MMA. Hon. Charles Barron joined her, vehemently arguing that “this sport should remain banned.” Assembly Majority Leader Joseph D. Morrelle argued in favor of the bill’s passage; as did Hon. Dean Murray, who vouched for the professionalism that he has witnessed in mixed martial arts, but also argued about the dangers of not having proper oversight at events.
HOT TOPIC > Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor 2 Nearing Finality, Contracts Reportedly Issued
The arguments by the few against the bill were wide-ranging, likening MMA to slavery, questioning how the bill to legalize MMA would stop child sex offenders from assaulting children, and calling it much more violent that boxing, football, or other professional sports.
Murray closed his argument for the bill with a passionate, “It is time to legalize mixed martial arts in the State of New York,” and that is what happened.
When the votes were tallied, the bill to legalize mixed martial arts in New York passed the State Assembly with 113 voting for the bill and 25 voting against it.
The bill still needs Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s signature to become law, but that is considered all but a formality, as Cuomo has shown strong support for legalizing MMA in his state.
According to Newsday’s Mark La Monica, Cuomo included funding for the New York State Athletic Commission to oversee mixed martial arts in his 2016 budget.
”New York is the only state in the nation that does not allow professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) contests,” read Gov. Cuomo’s proposal for legalizing MMA in his State of the State book, according to Newsday. “Thousands of New Yorkers attend dozens of unregulated amateur MMA events in New York each year and unlicensed promoters organize and promote amateur MMA contests in all corners of New York State.
“The Governor seeks to authorize both amateur and professional MMA and will ensure that contests happen under either the supervision of the New York State Athletic Commission or an alternative authorized sanctioning entity. It will place firm controls on MMA, its participants and promoters that ensure the protection of fighters and fans.”
Now that legislation has met with approval of both the Senate and the Assembly, Gov. Cuomo’s signature will open the door to MMA in New York.
“I do support MMA because it is an economic generator,” Gov. Cuomo told Newsday on Tuesday.
The UFC has been lobbying for this day for many years, and already has a date penciled in for an event at Madison Square Garden sometime this fall.

Rousimar Palhares, Still Under Suspension, Signs to Fight for Venator FC
http://ift.tt/1RybcRW
Venator Fighting Championship on Tuesday announced that it has signed welterweight Rousimar Palhares to fight at its May 21 even in Milan.
Palhares, a former World Series of Fighting champion, is the latest controversial signing by the Italian fight promotion, which also garnered a lot of attention for inking a deal with troubled UFC veteran Jason “Mayhem” Miller.
Miller has been in and out of legal trouble continuously for the past few years, most recently for suspicion of driving under the influence and a vandalism charge. While not in legal trouble, Palhares is currently in the midst of a two-year suspension handed down by the Nevada Athletic Commission for having held a shoulder-lock submission (Kimura) on WSOF 22 opponent Jake Shields well beyond Shields’ taps and the taps of referee Steve Mazzagatti, who had to forcibly pull Palhares off of Shields.
RELATED > Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller Arrested Again, Bail Set at $1 Million
The Palhares incident in the fight with Shields was the latest in a lengthy record for having held submissions beyond what was considered sportsmanlike. He has been suspended in the past for the same transgression and was also released from his UFC contract for doing the same thing in yet another fight.
In signing Palhares, Venator FC announced that he would immediately fight for its welterweight championship against Norwegian fighter Emil “Valhalla” Meeks.
“Rousimar is a great champion who has often found himself unfairly under fire for excessive holding (alleged or real) after opponents have tapped out,” said Venator FC President Frank Merenda. “But anyone who knows him knows that he is a good guy who never wants to hurt anyone. He’s a hard worker, a serious and respectful guy, who genuinely loves the world of combat sports. Above all, he has a real desire to redeem himself in front of everyone and show that he is not the ‘monster” that everyone talks about.”
His opponent, at the Venator FC 3 card in Milan, is well known in Europe. Meeks is known for his theatrical personality, his technique, and his tenacity, which comes from an endless desire to put on a show for his fans.
“(Meeks) couldn’t wait to for the chance to face a top fighter like Rousimar, and when we offered it to him, he didn’t hesitate for a second before accepting,” said Merenda. “He is convinced that he has the technical and tactical ability to make him ‘the anti- Toquinho,’ and he wants to deliver a big upset to the Brazilian champion.”
In addition to Palhares vs. Meeks, Venator FC 3 also features Miller facing UFC veteran Luke Barnatt for the middleweight championship. The promotion has also signed UFC veterans Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Che Mills.

Primus returns to the Bellator MMA cage fresh off a hard-fought victory over Derek Anderson at Bellator 141: Guillard vs. Girtz. Now, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt will look to apply his craft for the fifth time under the Bellator banner – making his first appearance during the SPIKE-televised main card.

The 27-year-old Brazilian Top Team product has competed professionally since 2005 and has won nine out of his last ten matchups. Bas Rutten on Reuniting with Mauro Ranallo and Saying Goodbye to Kevin Randleman
http://ift.tt/1Riqw23
Thirteen years after they first shared a commentary table, former Pride FC announcers Bas Rutten and Mauro Ranallo will once again sit side by side to analyze and discuss combat sports when they reunite on the upcoming season of Inside MMA on AXS TV.
Speaking to MMAWeekly.com, Rutten discussed his camaraderie with Ranallo, the passing of his one-time UFC rival Kevin Randleman, and what’s going on in his ever-busy world.
MMAWeekly.com: Firstly, Bas, how did you feel to find out you’d be reunited with Mauro Ranallo on AXS TV’s Inside MMA?
Bas Rutten: I thought it was great. I already knew that with Kenny (Rice) that he was going to be so busy with NBC with boxing and Kentucky Derby and the Olympics coming up. Mauro and I just started a podcast and then suddenly I got a little rumor that Mauro was going to do Inside MMA with me, so I started making phone calls and then I realized what was going on.
First we do a podcast together, which we just started and really enjoy, and now we’re going to work together on Inside MMA, so we’re stoked to say the least.
MMAWeekly.com: How has the chemistry grown or changed since you first teamed up in Pride FC 13 years ago?
Bas Rutten: I certainly think things have gotten better. Back in 2003 is when Mauro came to Pride FC, that was the first big MMA show he had done, and now after all these years with the work he’s done with all the biggest companies on the planet, it only helps.
Mauro is always learning. He’ll sit in his car and read notes. That’s the way he’s always been. I haven’t seen anything different from him since 2003. So I think it’s going to be better and we’ll hit it off.
MMAWeekly.com: Do you ever get flashbacks or déjà vu to the old Pride days working together again?
Bas Rutten: We’ll always get flashbacks on the podcast. We were right there and were with these fighters. Some of the stories that Pride FC did, we always talk about that. They had such great video footage and storytelling. You see it a lot in pro wrestling, and you should see it more in MMA. People want to root for somebody or see them lose, one of the two, and both is good for the promoters and fighters.
MMAWeekly.com: Some of the people involved in Pride such as former president Nobuyuki Sakakibara and figurehead Nobuhiko Takada recently joined forces in the new promotion Rizin. What’s it like to see something of a revival of the Pride days?
Bas Rutten: We will talk about it for sure with the (Inside MMA) show because we talk about the entire world of MMA. It’s weird to see an organization like that popping up again. I don’t know if it’s going to succeed. I’ve always said that they’re going to need a new (Kazushi) Sakuraba type of guy because Sakuraba was the person who made Pride FC. To find a guy like that is going to be hard.
I think a few shows like this with Fedor (Emelianenko) and those (former Pride fighters) will get the people to tune in, but a few shows in people are going to need someone to root for, and (RIZIN) is going to need some Japanese superstars to make that work.
MMAWeekly.com: Working once again with Mauro at the commentary desk, how do you think it will translate to Inside MMA from the old days?
Bas Rutten: I think it’s going to be about the same, just with a different energy. We’ll see what happens this Friday when we start, and see what’s going to happen. The great thing about Mauro and myself, he’s not the type of guy to always agree when I say something. If he doesn’t like it, he says it. We have that on the podcast and we’ll have it on Inside MMA. The energy is going to be different and we’ll see where it takes us.
MMAWeekly.com: Recently, the man you beat for the UFC heavyweight title in 1999, Kevin Randleman, passed away. What are your thoughts on losing someone you had a special history with?
Bas Rutten: It was such weird news. We all knew Kevin and all the crazy accidents and illnesses and things he went through, and he beat it, so for him to get pneumonia and he passed away from it… Mauro and I had just shot some stuff and we heard a rumor online that he passed away, so I texted his wife and Phil Baroni and we (confirmed) the news.
I wish more people knew how Kevin was outside the cage. They knew who the fighter was, but he was a really nice guy and helped everybody. I did seminars (with Randleman in 2011) at the Tapout Gym for the family members of Shawn Tompkins, who had passed away at the time, and then I was back in Vegas for (Randleman’s) funeral, so that was a hard pill to swallow.
MMAWeekly.com: As always you have a myriad of things going on. What can you tell us about what’s going on with you in 2016?
Bas Rutten: We’ve still got the O2 Trainer we’re doing. It’s the training device, and we have a world-renowned scientist who loves the thing, and now we’re in medical journals with the science to back up all the claims we’ve made, so that’s going to be a big thing for me. We’re also working on getting a public company.
Everything else is just the quiet before the storm. I’m working on a TV show now, and we shot a teaser for that, and once we hear something back from a TV channel about that, I’ll talk more about that. We have the podcast, Inside MMA and my gym. That’s pretty much everything I have right now. Hopefully in May I’ll go to the UFC in Holland and work that show, so we’ll see what happens there as well.
MMAWeekly.com: Thanks for taking time out for us, Bas. People in the industry often referred to you as the hardest working man in MMA. With all he’s got going on now, is Mauro the new one?
Bas Rutten: Mauro is really pushing it to the next level now. This guy comes home, Wednesday morning, then we’re doing the podcast and then early Thursday morning we’re going to start shooting some things, then he’s off doing Boxing, (GLORY) kickboxing or WWE, so he’s home for a like a day and a half, two and a half days a week, so I think he’s got me beat. I’m still the pretty one, plus I can kick his butt, so if he says something wrong to me, I can always do that.

Top 5 Takeaways from UFC Fight Night: Mark Hunt vs. Frank Mir
http://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Welcome to the Mark Hunt show. It’s where the UFC books the hard-hitting puncher typically on some overseas show and hopes for the best: A walk-off knockout.
Playing the punching bag on this night, at UFC Fight Night 85, is Frank Mir, reprising his role from 2009 against Brock Lesnar. In that fight, at least, Lesnar had enough energy and drive to jump to the ground and go for the ground and pound.
Let’s dive into the pool and if you are in the splash zone, cover up.
5. Stop The Fight!!!
When a fighter looks up at the referee to stop the fight, you usually suck as a referee.
Neil Magny absolutely killed Hector Lombard in the second and third rounds. The number of unanswered punches is up for dispute — anywhere from 40 to 100 — but it may as well have been 1,000. Referee Steve Perceval either had money on Lombard or his little sister has a crush on the Cubano and he couldn’t pull the trigger.
Somebody needs a refresher course in Refereeing 101. Hell, just tell him to watch this video. Now here’s a referee who KNOWS how to stop a fight. Maybe we should get Don King breathing down the neck of some of these refs to get them to do their jobs:
Editor’s note: Nostalgia
4. Neil Magny vs. Conor McGregor
Based on the way Magny was laid out in the first round by Lombard, it’s probably not best for him to step into the cage against Robbie Lawler. The welterweight champion has better cardio than Lombard and probably wouldn’t have let Magny back in the fight like Lombard did. But Magny is a hot property, so if Conor McGregor wants to fight at welterweight, book him in a match with Magny, instead of a set-up fight with Nate Diaz, whom the UFC hopes will trade with him and give McGregor the advantage. Let McGregor fight with the real welterweights, not just the ones that the UFC hopes he can beat.
3. Retirement Line Gets Bigger
If anyone should be talking about retirement, or should be Bellator-bound, it’s James Te Huna. He’s been KO’d or submitted in his last four fights — all in the first round. Yes, Bosse looked great in delivering his straight right hand on Te Huna, but Te Huna is done. He is moving backwards in his career and even if he is from New Zealand and can drawl a live crowd and ratings, the UFC might cut this guy. He’s not going to turn it around.
2. Mark Hunt Does Not Deserve A Title Shot
Mark Hunt beat Frank Mir. So what? Like we didn’t see that coming. Mir needed to have survived the first round in order to make it competitive and that clearly didn’t happen. Hunt is always going to look good when he lands a big punch. That’s what he does. Jon Jones throws elbows. Hulk Hogan wins money. Mark Hunt knocks you out. But but the elites of the division tend to expose Hunt. He also didn’t look great physically. While he’s never going to win the Jesse “The Body” Award for best abs, he didn’t look his normal Somoan-big self. Time isn’t on his side either. Keep him as a special attraction — fighting on overseas cards. Book him against Andrei Arlovski if you want to see a head fly across the Octagon. But don’t give him a title shot.
1. Frank Mir SHOULD NOT RETIRE
Yeah, he got knocked out by Mark Hunt. So what? Hunt knocks out a lot of guys. Mir is never going to be heavyweight champion of the world again, but if there’s a place in this sport for Hunt, CM Punk and Vitor Belfort in 2016, there’s a place for Frank Mir. Yes, he’s slower, fatter and less energetic, but he can still beat some guys. Whoever booked Hunt vs. Mir clearly wanted to see Mir get knocked out. That’s a bad fight for him. But with a good camp, and if he trains 100 percent, Mir can still be competitive against some guys. The UFC should book Mir against Arlovksi. Yes, the first fight was terrible, but both guys know that so they will probably come out differently. Give Mir a competitive fight (James Te Huna, anybody?) and then send him off to the UFC Hall of Fame and an inevitable career in the broadcast booth. Don’t call for his retirement just because he got knocked out by Mark Hunt. Hunt hits so hard he would knock out Jon Jones, you know, if Jones was 36 years old, overweight, and slow.

Randy Couture Helps Rescue Family from Car Crash in Mexico
http://ift.tt/1XJcMid
While former UFC champion Randy Couture has become more known for the action in the movies he’s made over the past several years, he took part in some real-life excitement en route to working on a new movie project.
Couture landed in Mexico on Sunday and was on his way to his hotel in preparation for his role in the movie “Bruja,” when he and his driver saw a minivan crash, according to TMZ Sports.
“I looked up and this minivan went off the road,” Couture told TMZ. “It rolled over twice into the jungle. My driver pulled over and called the police. We busted into the woods and helped the two women and the kid.
“The vehicle was on its side, so everyone was climbing out the side door. One of the women seemed like she was in shock. She was really weak. So I carried her out of the van and to the road. I wanted to get everyone away from the car because I was concerned it was going to catch fire. There were all these fluids leaking from the van.”
All in all, it sounds as if the results of the accident weren’t too severe. Couture said that all six people involved emerged with no serious injuries.
While Couture held both the UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight championships during his career, he hasn’t fought since 2011. He finished his career with a 19-11 record. Couture has remained busy with his acting career, appearing in movies such as The Expendables series, The Scorpion King: Rise of the Warriors, the Hawaii Five-O television series, and more.

Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice Tested Positive for Steroids Following Bellator 149
http://ift.tt/1QSXi7l
Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice each tested positive for banned substances following their respective bouts at Bellator 149. And on Monday, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, as first reported by MMAFighting.com, confirmed that both men had anabolic steroids in their systems.
Shamrock and Slice helped Bellator shatter viewership records, drawing an average of 2 million viewers to the Feb. 19 broadcast on Spike TV, but now face the specter of testing positive to steroids.
RELATED > Bellator 149 Fight Highlights Video: Royce Gracie vs. Ken Shamrock
Shamrock, who lost to Royce Gracie in the controversial main event, tested positive for nandrolone, a steroid, and methadone, an opioid, and also showed an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio. Shamrock’s T/E ratio was 12.4:1, which is well above the World Anti-Doping Agency limit of 4:1.
Slice also tested positive for nandrolone and showed an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio. His T/E ration was 6.4:1. Slice won a lackluster bout with fellow former backyard brawler Dada 5000 (real name Dhafir Harris).
While the TDLR has yet to confirm any sanctions for the positive drug test results, MixedMartialArts.com, the official record keeper for the Association of Boxing Commissions, has already changed the result of Kimbo’s fight with Dada 5000 from a victory for Kimbo to a no contest.

Kowalkiewicz made her promotional debut in December, defeating Randa Markos by unanimous decision. The 30-year-old Polish fighter hopes to extend her unbeaten streak when she faces Clark at Ahoy Rotterdam in May.
UFC Fight Night 87: Overeem vs. Arlovski will be the first time the Las Vegas-based fight promotion has held an event in the Netherlands. The fight card is headlined by a heavyweight clash between Alistair Overeem and former champion Andrei Arlovski.
