btvs group rewatch episode 9: the puppet show (aka my thoughts during the episode, this will contain spoilers for the series)

we start with a shot of the ballerina, who is the first one to die. paired with the narration, not the most subtle, but still some fun foreshadowing

half finished talent show sign in the back says sunny d instead of sunnydale

the fabled duck shirt. allyson hannigan loved it so much that one of the producers (i think) gifted it to her!

oh snyder. i mentioned this back in my response to the pack and still stand by it: he makes way more sense for the show tonally than flutie, but my lord does he suck. instantly hateable

the pre-credits/post-credits match cut of the demon to the magician is GREAT foreshadowing

OBSESSED with buffy’s dress (and the layer outfit with her in the dress, jacket, and boots)

buffy and xander’s faces after willow says “it could be me!”

if you look closely at the magicians deck, the card at the bottom is the two or three of hearts. GREAT foreshadowing

once again taking a moment to appreciate the buffy outfit. the day i wear this as a halloween costume will be one of my happiest

“there are things i will not tolerate: students loitering out of school, horrible murders with hearts being removed, and also smoking” SUCH A GOOD LINE

the sid out the window jump scare is genuinely terrifying

giles taking dealing-with-cordelia advice from giles is such a great moment

the way the show really holds out on confirming whether or not buffy is right about sid being real is reminiscent of the reveal in witch

and the reveal of sid’s true nature coming after giles and willow find out some demons steal organs to become real is some great dramatic writing

THE SINGLE TEAR FALLING DOWN GILES CHEEK AS SID TELLS HIS STORY

the double red herring of morgan and snyder is a super fun dynamic for the show !

AMAZING dramatic tension in the climax! the cuts between the scoobies and giles with the magician really amp up the tension, and you absolutely love to see willow with an axe

also i wouldn’t be surprised if the design of the demons final form inspired the design of the kanima from teen wolf

this being the only episode with a post credits scene is hysterical

this episode is deeply of its time in many ways, and treads a bit into after school psa territory at certain moments. it leans very heavily into combining early fears relating to the internet, both in general and with fears of the younger generation (especially girls) being preyed on by unknown people on the internet

BUFFY BIRTHDAY PLOT HOLE (it says may 1979 when her birthday is in january 1981)

“to read makes our speaking english good” top tier xander line

willow talking to the computer is unrealistic not because people don’t do it but because she’s not half mumbling and saying things as she’s typing them

did anyone’s school have functional showers? my high school had them and they were clearly functional at some point, but i don’t think they were connected to the water. i feel like every tv show set at a high school has some kind of locker room shower scene but i have no idea if anyone has ever used them in real life.

what the hell did fritz drug willow with? if it’s chloroform, where the hell did he source it? truly wild

miss calendar knowing about the supernatural was such a great reveal on first watch

i also do love the idea of a technopagan. it combines the sci-fi stereotype of the computer whiz with the fantasy stereotype of the mystically inclined sage. it also does a great job at setting up willows future role in the group

also like the forming of the circle virtually. shows the flip side of the ‘internet is home to scary strangers’ argument laid out by the show before

the last twist of moloch being bound into his body is not only a fun expectation subversion, but a good way to let the audience know he is permanently gone (unlike some of the other threats from earlier this season)

the end of this episode is a 10/10 buffy episode ending. the laughter petering off into thousand yard stares from all of them? amazing
