Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.

How could it affect the calamities?

Social media is important in communicating with other people around the globe. It helped families, social workers, and the government in discerning information during calamities. Through social media, every family can easily communicate with their relatives from other places especially those outside the country. While social workers it can be a tool to educate them about pieces of information during calamities. Our government most especially can spread or disseminate information through the use of social media.

Social media is a big help. Do you remember the super typhoon Yolanda that hit the Tacloban, Samar, and Leyte? With the help of social media, we are able to inform other countries that we are suffering hunger and the destruction of facilities brought by Yolanda. Social media is a gift of modern time that is a big help if it is properly used.

Due to natural disasters, there is increased communication since people seek to contact family and friends in the disasters zone and seek information regarding food, shelter, and transportation. Social media has played a significant role in disseminating information about these disasters by allowing people to share information and ask for help. Social media are also becoming vital to recovery efforts after crises when infrastructure must be rebuilt and stress management is critical.

Social media cannot and should not supersede current approaches to disaster management communication or replace existing infrastructure, but if managed strategically, they can be used to bolster current systems.

Here are some examples of common used words in technology.

Internet

Definition: The internet is a worldwide computer network that transmits a variety of data and media across interconnected devices. It works by using a packet routing network that follows Internet Protocol (IP) and Transport Control Protocol (TCP).

In its earliest days, the internet was only used by computer experts, scientists, engineers, and librarians who had to learn a complicated system in order to use it, but as the technology improved and consumers adapted, it became an essential tool for people around the globe.

 Software

Definition: Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate computers and execute specific tasks.

The two main categories of software are application software and system software. An application is software that fulfills a specific need or performs tasks. System software is designed to run a computer's hardware and provides a platform for applications to run on top of.

Definition: A browser is software that allows a computer user to find and view information on the Internet. Web browsers interpret the HTML tags in downloaded documents and format the displayed data according to a set of standard style rules.

Definition: Assistive technology refers to any software or hardware that acts to assist and improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. Examples include wheelchairs, prosthetics, voice-to-text technology, and text-to-speech technology.

Sentence: A lot of people could not use assistive technologies to help them due to poverty.

 Computer Virus

Definition: A computer virus is a type of malicious code or program written to alter the way a computer operates and is designed to spread from one computer to another.
