Disney's Belle, Jane & Milo are all related!!!

I just came up with this: I love the idea of an AU where Belle, Jane Porter & Milo Thatch are all related, bc so many people support the popular theory that Belle is Jane's grandmother, and Milo is so much like them that he could be, perhaps, a common descendant that they share. Like: Belle grandmother, Jane granddaughter, and Milo is Jane's son with Tarzan? (Milo is too modern to be Belle's son). Therefore, that would make Milo Belle's great-grandson. The Middle’s Sue Heck and Brad appreciation post

Sue Sue Heck is literally the best thing that happened to my life. She’s the most relatable character I’ve ever seen on a tv show, and believe me, I watch A LOT of tv shows. Like, A WHOLE LOT. Still, since ALF days with Andrea Olson portraying Lynn Tanner on the eponymous show, I haven’t seen a relatable teen character with such a realistic portrayal of what is actually like to be a teenager. Especially these days. Congratulations to the creators of The Middle DeAnn Heline and Eileen Heisler for giving us the opportunity of growing up alongside our wonderful girl Sue. And the talented Miss Eden Sher for bringing to life this amazing and very needed character in 21st century television. With the schedule full of mass media of reality shows, and teens on Disney with glamorous or supernatural lives, we don’t see a teen character despicted in a realistic manner since Lizzie Mcguire days. Girl Meets World with the marvelous Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter were amazing, and so is Andi Mack’s Peyton Elizabeth Lee. But there’s something special with Sue Heck, because she doesn’t have amazing best friends with her to guide her until she’s in her last years of high school and college, where she has Brad and Lexie, at last. But she had to navigate the whole popularity, peer pressure, middle and high school years on her own. And with such an optimistic nature!!! Sue is my idol. She really is. I’m so much like her, it’s like my life on tv. Except I have no siblings. But middle class life is the same whether you live in USA’s Midwest or the south of Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina in South America. That’s where I live. And life is exactly the same. Wonderful and hardworking parents, tough days, hope, some success we celebrate like there’s no tomorrow, and a lot of failures that make us stronger. But, like Sue tells us, we’re not alone. Thank you Sue, and Eden. You’re one of a kind. And as for Brad -Brock Ciarlelli-: He’s the only Pre-Simon era of gay characters with happy backgrounds. He’s a theater geek who adores Sue. And that makes him awesome. He’s so fun and positive, like our Sue. And then Lexie -Daniela Bobadilla, a Latina!!- arrives and not only wins Axl’s heart, but ours too. So, thank you Brad and Lexie. For being the best friends Sue always needed, and being the best friends we all wished we could have in our lives and hope to meet one day. You go, The Middle!

I love that movie!!! She's SO much like me, it made me uncomfortable the first time I watched it bc she's SO MUCH like me in that movie. Back then I had no idea what Asperger's Syndrome was, or that I had it, but prior to that moment I watched it, I never felt THAT identified with a character. I thought we were both eccentric with overprotective parents bc we both were only children, not that she was aspie & so I was!! I got my diagnosis three years ago, & this movie is particularly comforting bc it's super endearing & sweet & she meets quirky people like her so it gives me hope. I love Sandra. My thing is Astronomy & sudokus. I love the movie Adam. We are who we are & we gotta be proud of it!

All about Steve

Hey, i don’t know if you have already seen the movie “All about Steve”, but… its main character is obviously autistic. And awesome. And stylish. And she’s determined and like, oh my god, it’s one of the characters with whom i could actually relate the most (with Jane from “Jane wants a boyfriend” and Adam from “Adam”, two canonically autistic characters). So, here’s the story : Mary Horowitz works for a newspaper and she’s making crosswords. Crosswords and words in general are her main special interest and she gives a lot of her time to her passion. Her parents organize for her a date and she falls in love pretty hard with this guy, who’s not interested in her, but who’s also too coward to tell her clearly. He’s a cameraman for a news program and tells her that she could go with her on his next report, but unfortunately, she “has a job” and “she can’t obviously go with him, too bad !”. Mary doesn’t get the clue, loses her job the following days and goes on a road trip to be with him. Sandra Bullock “won” a Razzie Award for her performance, but i don’t get it. She’s super cute, she can pull off dramatic expressions and stuff when she has to and Mary is super likable.  I kinda regret that the word “autism” hasn’t been used once in the movie. Because Mary is the eccentric and extrovert autistic type and it’s not a common trope. It would have been so good to have a clear canon autistic woman character.  This is how she reacts when she’s happy :

Which is pretty much how i can react myself if i’m not with my parents or surrounded by ableist folks. Not very often, but yeah. Since she has to come up with a lot of definitions and different words for her crosswords, she’s a true encyclopedia and tends to infodump quite a bit during the movie :

And she also has sensory issues, which is explained by this actual quote :

“Mary, why do you wear those stupid red boots all the time? You wanna know why? Because it makes my toes feel like 10 friends on a camping trip, that’s why.”

And like… Wow. I mean… That’s exactly why i love to wear my old baskets, even though they’re ready to be dumped. Because my toes are just so comfy in them. Even though people give me bad looks for this, i still keep wearing them because they make me feel good. And Mary perfectly explained this in a few meaningful words.

Also, she displays a bit of executive dysfunction, like in this scene where she wants to kiss the other main character, but totally forget that she’s wearing her seatbelt :

In fact, i think i can say why this movie has such bad reviews. After the movie was over, i was so in love with Mary’s character that i was ready to overlook every little flaw of this movie (because it’s not perfect, far from it, but it’s still a nice movie). At this moment, my mother said :

“Sandra Bullock was really funny. Her character is so retarded !” … Mom. Don’t use that word. And just freakin’ look at her and look at me. We’re a lot alike. Do you mean that i’m “retarded” too ? That’s really what you think ? So, yeah, for me, it’s ableism that panned this movie. Because it’s not that bad, it’s actually funny and well-thought.

Mary Horowitz, you’re a fine and awesome autistic woman. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

I hope you’re prepared for a little rant, cause I will need a minute.

To answer your first question, I don’t neccessarily like her. She’s not one of my favourite characters, and I don’t get overly excited when she gets a scene. However, I believe she deserves better. Better friends, an own well-written arc and better treatment in general.

As for the second part, I don’t think she is as dumb as everyone thinks. She figured out who felicityfornow is right from the start, but got dismissed by her friends immediately. And I know there are a lot of things she misses out on, or that she often enough doesn’t notice when to better shut her mouth. But there are so many forms of intelligence, psychologists are still fighting about how to define (and therefore measure) it. So, just because we as viewers roll our eyes at her along with other characters around her, it doesn’t mean she’s dumb. As the squad (@strawberriesindenial) mentioned rightfully, Jazmín has special interests while everything else has the tendency to go over her head. But that’s okay. Everyone has different hobbies, preferences and qualities and these naturally affect our perception and behaviour. For Jazmín, her expertise is evidently in the field of fashion and social media. So instead of calling her dumb, I think it’s more accurate to say she directs all of her attention to the things she deeply cares about. But her habit to speak her mind without a filter is probably what makes her appear less intelligent.

To me, the show doesn’t handle her in the right way. (Another example in television would be Sheldon Cooper, he has problems with human interactions and sarcasm along other things, but we don’t call him dumb, don’t we? And emotional intelligence is definitely a thing) It’s okay to not be the world’s next Einstein. I wish the show would take the opportunity to highlight that and teach kids and teens that there is a way to deal with people like Jazmín (and it’s not belittlening). Jazmín deserves friends who gently point things out to her if it’s neccessary. Friends who support and appreciate her and her talents. She has potential. And I hope for the sake of her character that we will see her getting actual development and not only the “threat to a popular ship” treatment.
