an: updating this fic at midnight:30 when i have to be up at 5am to drive to nyc! so please enjoy. wc: 1,241 (sorry)

Simon had grown to find comfort within the walls of Wille’s small apartment, though this was only the second time he’d stepped foot inside but he loved it. Everything about it screamed Wille. Plants lined most of the walls and the windowsills. Light spilled into the apartment and there were splashes of color everywhere.
Now, Wille sat across the table from Simon, their face buried in a copy of In The Dark. Simon sat there, simply watching them for a few seconds and admiring everything he found beautiful about them. The way their eyebrows furrowed as they read, the way their hands sat softly on the book as they held it. Everything about them was absolutely captivating and Simon just couldn’t look away.
“So,” they say, finally looking up from the book. “Lucas thinks he has to fix whatever the fuck is going on, no?”
“I think that would be a correct assumption.” Simon confirms with a small nod. “Nobody is taking him seriously still. Nathan says he is but his actions all say otherwise.”
“Right, so if Lucas wants to be taken seriously then he has to do this on his own.” They pause. “For himself.”
One of the best parts of Simon’s weeks had become getting to talk about this book with Wille. The book meant more to Simon than anyone knew and, a few years prior, had been his escape, helping him whenever the memories of past homes became too much. He had also always felt connected to Lucas, thinking that it was his responsibility to fix things. So, getting to actually talk about it with someone who seemed just as excited as he was, made Simon's day. Besides that, Wille always made great points and mentioned things that Simon glosses over the countless times he had read the book. The more they talked, the more Simon fell in love with the book.
“I don’t think he wants to do this but more so that he has to.” Simon says after a moment. “It’s almost like if he doesn’t figure out why this is going on and why he’s the only one who can remember it then it’ll be his fault if things don’t go back to normal.”
“That makes sense. Maybe this is about the burden that younger children carry when they feel like they need to hold their world together. Like when friends fight or parents separate.” Wille comments.
Simon looks up at Wille, wondering what led them to those conclusions. He realizes that he knows practically nothing about their life - outside of the little bit he knows about their parents and the fact that they have an older brother.
“Do you find yourself connecting to Lucas, or even just the burden that he might feel, at all as you read this?” Simon asks as he closes his copy of the book.
“In a way.” Simon misses the way that they hesitate before replying. “It wasn’t a friend or my parents. It was when my brother moved out. He’s always been my biggest support and it felt like my whole world was collapsing when he left. I didn’t know how to handle anything on my own but it still felt like it was my own responsibility to hold my life together. I really should’ve reached out to someone – anyone – for help, but I was convinced that I needed to do it alone. What about you?”
“Yeah,” Simon breathes out. “My dad. He really isn’t the best person, especially when my sister and I were growing up. But, um, he and my mama separated when I was younger, but we still moved between his house and my moms for a bit after that. Before they split, I felt like it was my job to keep everything together. I did everything I could but I was so young. Nothing felt like enough.”
“I’m sure it was more than enough because that was never something you would’ve been able to fix, no matter how hard you tried.” Simon normally hates the sympathy he gets after telling people about his childhood, but something is different with Wilhelm. He can tell that they genuinely mean every single word they say. There’s no pity, no obligation. Just the truth.
“I hope it was.” Simon finally answers. “Should we start getting ready for that party now?”
— — —
Within hours, Wille’s apartment is completely cleaned and ready for people to arrive. Food is spread all over the kitchen table that the pair had previously been sitting at, any traces of their little book club were gone.
As people arrive, Wille greets all of their friends with a hug and happily introduces themself to all of Simon’s friends. They make a mental note to tell Simon that they really like his friends. Their apartment is filled and it couldn’t feel more like home. The only people who were missing were Erik and the mystery person he told Wille he was bringing. Then, it would truly feel right.
They leave their previous post at the door and make their way into the kitchen. It’s fairly empty, Elise is the only one there when Wille walks in.
“Are you having fun?” Wille asks them.
“I am. Rosh is really cool. Did you lose your shit when you met them? I know how much of a fan you are.” Elise asks with a small laugh.
“Haha. You’re so fucking funny.” Their tone of voice remains purposefully monotone as they speak. “I actually was quite cool when I met them. They seem really great and I completely understand why Simon is friends with them. I am, however, excited to see Simon meet Erik. I am hoping he’ll be slightly less cool.”
Almost as if it were planned, Erik walks into the kitchen as soon as the words leave Wille’s lips. Elise greets their older cousin before making their way back into the more crowded area. Only once they’re gone does Wille notice the person lingering behind their brother.
“Hey Wille.” Erik says, stepping to the side so the person can step up next to them. “This is who I wanted you to meet.”
Wille looks them up and down. Their first assumption is that they look kind. Their face is soft with a small, almost shy, smile on display. Their hair is a dark blonde and thin rimmed glasses rest on their face.
“Wille,” Erik starts, taking a deep breath. “This is my boyfriend, Rune. He worked with me on one of my previous movies and we started talking through that.”
“Oh, so not a secret girlfriend but a secret boyfriend.” A smile grows on Wille’s face. “It’s nice to meet you, Rune.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Wille. Erik has told me so much about you.” Their voice is just as soft as the rest of him. Wille looks between their brother and Rune. They may not know Rune yet but if Erik likes him then there’s not a doubt in Wille’s mind that they’ll like him.
“Sorry to pull your boyfriend from you,” Wille says to Rune. “But there’s someone I want Erik to meet. I’ll bring him back to you when I’m done, I promise.”
With that, Wille physically drags their brother to go find Simon, knowing how excited he was when he found out that he’d be able to meet Erik. All Wille can think about is the smile on his face when it actually happens.

synopsis: anonymity was something that had always been a top priority for wilhelm. keeping their personal life and their author life entirely separate. that was, until they met simon. anonymity slowly began feeling like lies and it was only a matter of time until it all came tumbling down.

thoughts and feelings ✐ᝰ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

an: editing this in real time bc i hate the way all of the written parts are written bc my writing style has changed so much since this was written wc: 1,084

After saying their goodbyes to Simon, Wille sets down the phone with a smile. There’s something about talking to Simon that makes them feel understood in a way they’ve never felt before. They had talked to many people about their book over the years, but, out of everyone they’ve talked to about their book, nobody has gotten it in the way Simon does. That is all Wille has ever wanted. To be understood.
Between all of the talks they’ve had with Simon, it has made them think back to when they were first writing In The Dark. The book had always been an escape for them. Truly, they had written it just for themself, no intention of ever really sharing it with anyone else. They wrote the story to create a world where they fit. Lucas became their outlet. They found themself writing whenever they got stuck in their head, Lucas was their way out – in more ways than one. Sure Lucas had his quirks and flaws but he was never unsure of himself and all of his actions stayed true to who he was. It was all Wille ever wanted to be.
Then they decided to publish the book. It was out in the world for about a year before it started gaining traction. When In The Dark first started growing in popularity, Wille would spend hours of their time reading stories from readers about how they found part of themselves in either Lucas or Nathan. They read stories from loads of younger siblings who struggled with feeling heard or feeling like they were being left behind by their older siblings who were simply growing up and living their lives. They also got to read the other side of that, older siblings who carried feelings of guilt as they moved out, leaving their younger siblings behind. They would be lying if they said that these stories weren’t part of the reason they had forgiven Erik as quickly as they did. Each story touched a place in Wille’s heart. A lot of the times while they would read the stories, they found themself in tears by the end of it. Something that was so personal to them had truly impacted others lives.
No story or comment they had ever read impacted them as much as getting to talk to Simon about this. When they were reading things online, there was a disconnect between the person and their story. Wille appreciated hearing each one but with Simon, everything was so much more real. They were a real person and on top of that, they were someone who Wille found themself caring deeply about.
Simon would never know it but Wille would be forever grateful that they had found their way to him.

The walk from their own apartment to Stella’s was rather quick. Nerves were bubbling up inside Wille the entire time. They expected to have to go up into Stella’s apartment but instead they found her sitting on the steps in front of the building. Stella waves when they see Wille, who immediately takes a seat next to her.
“Hi.” Is all that they say.
“Hey, Wille. So, what did you drag me up for?” Stella asks, her tone playful.
“There was actually something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Yeah, I gathered that.” Stella says as they gesture to where the two of them are.
Wille takes a final deep breath before speaking. “So, I think - no, actually, not think. I know I like Simon.”
A silence falls between the two. At first, Wille isn’t sure what to make of it. For a brief moment they wish they could take back the words they just said. Until they feel Stella’s arms wrap around them and pull them into a hug. Almost instantly, they feel the nerves disappear.
“I’m proud of you for telling me. Who else knows?”
“Um, just Erik and Felice.”
“I’m proud of you for admitting it. I know that wasn’t something that was easy for you to do.”
Wille just sort of nods, letting her words hang in the air for a moment before speaking again. “I think it was easy, especially with Erik, because of how everything has been since I moved out and just how supportive he’s been. I really don’t know where I would be without him.
“I’m glad you have him, seriously.” Stella tells Wille. “My family didn’t have the best reaction when I came out to them but they eventually came around to it. Even when it was at the point where only one of them supported me, it made everything feel so much more okay.”
“I’m lucky that I still have Erik after everything.”
“You’re lucky you have each other. I know things were rough between you two for awhile but it’s good seeing you be able to rely on each other now.”
Once the seriousness of the initial conversation is gone, the feeling becomes lighter.
“So, when are you going to ask Simon on a date?” Stella questions, nudging Wille with their shoulder.
“Um, never.” Their answer was so simple and almost immediate.
“Well, why not?”
“It’s too complicated.”
“Complicated how?”
“I don’t know. Simon is a really big fan of my book but he doesn’t know it’s mine. I don’t want to tell him. I am scared that if I do, it’ll change our friendship and it’ll change how he sees me.” Wille tells Stella. “I just, I don’t want to be anything more than Wille with him.”
“Wille, if he truly is your friend then telling him that shouldn’t change anything.”
“I know that. But I can’t help being scared. I really like him and even if he doesn’t feel the same way, I still want to be friends with him. If I suddenly tell him that I’m actually the person who wrote his favorite book, that could change everything.”
“Will you at least think about telling him?”
“I think about it.” Wille promises.
“Okay, it’s one in the morning. We’ve been out here for over an hour.” Stella comments after silence had fallen between the two. Wille just nods along. “Come on, you’re staying over, it is far too late to have you walking back to your apartment.”
The two stand up and Wille follows Stella up into her apartment. All of the words they said were still busy bouncing around in their brain. From finally – officially – coming out to Stella to their promise to think about telling Simon.

in the dark, chapter 5 ✐ᝰ⋆.ೃ࿔*:・
prev | masterlist | next
wc: 926
“You’re late.” Sara states almost immediately after Simon had closed the door behind him and Ayub. He knew he was going to hear it from his sister that he was late. 17 minutes late to be exact.
“It’s Simon’s fault.” Ayub tells her and Rosh as he takes a seat on the couch in between them.
“I figured it was. What did he do now?” Sara asks as Simon takes his own seat on the floor in front of the couch. It was the arrangement they always sat in and nobody dared mess it up.
“He didn’t do anything and he is also right here.” Simon says.
“He always does something.” Rosh adds then they all wait for Simon to explain himself.
He tells them about the texts and how he just wanted to be able to help Wille because it seemed like they needed someone to be there for them. He tells them that he eventually ended up calling them to talk instead.
“So, a crush?” Ayub asks once Simon finishes filling them all in. “Wait is this the kid who came by the other day?”
“Yeah, that was them. Wille.” he responds. “And it’s not a crush.”
“What’s with the blush then?” Sara comments to which Simon hides his face in his lap. He could feel the heat spread across his face before Sara had even commented on it.
“Shut up! It’s not a crush.”
“Keep telling yourself that. Enough with Simon’s gay little problems, what movie are we watching tonight?” Rosh asks, the topic of conversation shifting away from Simon.
As his friends bicker about what movie would be best to watch, Simon gets lost inside his own head. He thinks about the way Wille’s voice sounded when they had picked up the phone. He remembers the pain that he felt in his heart when he had first read the texts they didn’t mean to send him. He tries to forget how badly he wanted to be able to hug them, comfort them, as they were telling him things. It’s not a crush.

The next day, Wilhelm found themself sitting across a table from their brother. They each had their food sitting in front of them but while Erik ate his rather quickly, Wille just picked at theirs.
“Okay, what’s going on?” Erik says as he sets down his sandwich.
“I was talking to someone about In The Dark the other day and they said something that gave me an idea for the sequel.” Wille tells Erik. “They said something about how as they got older, it became their job to protect their older sister.”
“Okay..” Erik says as he begins to put the pieces together in his mind. “You want that to be Lucas and Nathan’s story?”
Wille nods enthusiastically. “I feel like that’s the only right way to go with everything. What if it comes up that Nathan was blamed for everything but it wasn’t actually him?”
“That could definitely work, Wille.” Erik says, a smile growing on his face. He has intense pride towards his younger sibling. He knows how much this book has meant to them since the beginning. “Now, why didn’t you talk to the person about your idea?”
“Well the thing is,” Wille begins. “They don’t know that I’m the one that wrote it.”
“Wille.”
“What?”
“Why haven’t you told them? Clearly they’re a fan and you’ve talked to them enough to base a whole sequel around something they said.”
“I don’t know. I’ve known they were a fan since the moment I met them. I want them to like me for me. Not because I wrote his favorite book. I do want to tell him, eventually. I just think that it’s still too soon.”
“You probably should tell him now if he’s such a big fan. If anything, I’m sure he’d love it.”
“I don’t want to tell him.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know,” Wille says honestly. “I don’t want it to change anything. What if he finds out and only likes me because of it.”
“If that is the case, then he doesn’t even deserve you in his life, Wille.” Erik takes a moment to study his younger sibling, as the realization sets in. “So, you like him?”
“No! Maybe. I don’t know, Erik.”
“You know, it’s okay if you do like him.”
That comment grabs Wille’s attention. ‘It’s okay if you do’ was something they needed to hear more than they knew. Their parents had always made it known that they wouldn’t be okay with either of their children falling in love with anyone other than a girl. They weren’t tied down to those expectations anymore.
“How was spending the night with the parents?” Erik asks after a few beats of silence
“You know, there were some fights but Simon called me and let me talk about it.” Wille says it all without thinking. The second they hear Simon’s name come from their voice, they want to take it back.
“Simon, huh? Now who is this mystery man?” Erik asks.
“He’s the one that gave me the sequel idea.”
“Giving you ideas for your book already? When’s the wedding?”
“God, you’re so annoying.” Wille comments but a blush has already creeped over their cheeks. “I barely even know him.
“Come on, I have to get back to set. You’re coming with me right?” Erik asks as he gets up, grabbing all of his trash to throw away.
Wille nods while doing the same and then following a few paces behind Erik out of the restaurant.

“Simon?”
“Oh my god you actually answered.”
“So this was your big idea?”
“Yeah.”
“…”
“I hope you don’t mind. I’m better at speaking than typing… quit laughing at me.”
“This is very okay. Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Caring.”
“Wilhelm, of course.”
“Uh, you can call me Wille. All of my friends do.”
“Oh so we’re friends now, Wille?”
“Well, I was hoping.”
“Haha, we’re friends. But anyways, back to your parents. Have you talked to them at all since you left?”
“Um, a little bit. Not a lot. We’ve talked here and there.”
“I’m sorry about them, Wille.”
“Nah, it’s okay. I’ve just been trying for so long to make them proud. But they don’t know about-“
“…”
“…”
“They don’t know about what?”
“Oh, um, nothing. I don’t think it would change how they see me.”
“Hopefully they’ll come around.”
“I hope.”
“If you’re at their house, where are you so that you can talk so openly about them?”
“Okay, I’ll tell you but you’re not allowed to laugh.”
“Okay?”
“I’m outside sitting on one of the swings on mine and Erik’s old swing set.”
“That’s actually really cute.”
“They still have it for some reason.”
“Is Erik your brother?”
“Yeah. He moved out when I was 13. He was 18 at the time. It felt like the biggest betrayal at the time. He left me here on my own. But now that I’m older, I understand why he did. He did what he had to do for himself. I think I would’ve done the same thing if I were in his shoes”
“Oh. I’m glad that you’re both out of there now. Things are good between you and him now though, right?”
“He’s one of my best friends now. No, he is my best friend now. I truly don’t know what I would do without him. He’s truly been the biggest support for everything I do.”
“ I’m glad you have him then. Siblings do make the best friends, huh?”
“They really do.”
“Hey, I actually have to run. I’m supposed to be heading over to my sisters, actually. Some movie night with our friends. I’ll talk to you later?”
“Yeah, definitely.”
“Bye Wille.”
“Wait, before you go. Thank you, Simon.”
“Always.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.”

slow dance in a parking lot
pairing: wilhelm x simon genre: fluff, they/them wilhelm warnings: none wc: 1,184 | maserlist
The summer air was warm as the sun sank below the trees. Painting the sky with pinks and oranges, making way for the impending night. The streets were mostly empty yet Simon still found himself in the passenger seat of Wilhelm’s car. These late night rides had become something the pair had grown fond of. Windows rolled down, music blasting, nothing else in the world mattered. Sometimes they’d talk and sometimes they wouldn’t. But they had been some of the best nights of Simon’s life nonetheless.
Wille’s hand rested on Simon’s thigh, like always. They enjoyed the constant touch, knowing that even in the absence of conversation, Simon was still there. The wind made Wille’s hair flow behind them, a sight Simon could never get tired of. Night after night he always made sure to take a moment and admire them. The way the colors of the setting sun made their face glow, the way their eyes lit up whenever they smiled, or the way songs sounded on their lips. Quite frankly, Simon thought they were perfect.
As the song that was playing faded into silence, Simon took it as an opportunity to turn the radio all the way down. This caused Wille to look over at them for a moment, confused, before turning their attention back to the road.
“So,” Simon says. “I was thinking.”
“Oh no. That’s never good.” Their laugh rings out and a smile instantly spreads across Simon’s face.
“Oh shut up.” His laugh matches Wille’s. “What if we stopped somewhere to grab snacks tonight?”
“Huh that’s actually not a bad idea.” They respond. “I think there’s a convenience store about 15 minutes from here. How does that sound?”
Simon hums in agreement before turning the volume of the radio up once again. He watches as scenery passes by in a blur - trees and bushes becoming one and the same to his eyes. A few times he catches Wille taking small glances at him, making butterflies erupt in his stomach each time.
Eventually, he hears the sound of Wilhelm turning the blinker on as the car begins to slow. They pull into a near empty parked lot which sits in front of a lonely looking store. It’s only when the car is parked and turned off that Simon notices that the sun is completely gone. The only light is coming from the two light poles in the parking lot.
Wille is the first to get out of the car, Simon following right behind them. He finds his spot right next to Wille and their hand finds his - fingers intertwined.
The store is quiet when they walk in. Almost an eery sort of feel but they both decide to ignore it. They say a quick hello to the cashier working up at the front but besides that, they were the only people in the store.
There were rows upon rows of different snack foods for them to choose from. Walking up and down, Simon kept pointing out different things that caught his eye. Each time he did so, Wille would ask if that’s what he wanted, eating the same reply each time - no. By the time they had done a full lap around the store, there was still nothing Simon had said yes to. Meanwhile, Wille had accumulated a few snacks in their free arm.
“Did you see anything you liked?” Wille asks.
“I saw too much,” Simon tells them. “I don’t know what to pick.”
“You can pick more than one thing,” they tell Simon, hoping that’ll make it easier for him to pick something.
“There’s so many choices though.” Simon complains, to which Wille giggles. “I cannot believe you are laughing at my misery.”
“Please, for the love of god, just pick something.” Their tone is playful as they speak.
Simon simply rolls his eyes at them but leaves them standing at the front of the store while he goes to grab something. He ends up back at Wille’s side with only a drink in hand. He gets yet another confused look from Wille.
“What?” he asks.
“You’re the one that wanted food.”
“I know. I’ll just steal some of yours.”
Wille rolls their eyes but makes their way up to the register, anyways. They end up walking out of the store with two bags in hand and Simon following right behind them.
Once back at the car, they take a seat leaning against the side of the car. Simon remains in his spot, seated right beside them. One by one they pull food out of the bag and hand Simon his soda. After everything is set out, they pull out their phone and put on music.
The two eat and talk, enjoying the cool summer breeze in the calmness of the world around them.
“I love nights like these,” Wille tells Simon before placing a chip into their mouth.
“Like what?” Simon asks.
“Like this.” Wille gestures towards both Simon and the world. “Existing with you like there is nobody else. It’s my favorite. You’re my favorite.”
“I like this too.” Simon says, staring into the sky at the stars shining down on them. “Every moment that I get to spend with you is amazing. Whether we’re talking or just driving, I love it.”
The conversation fizzles out not long after that, leaving nothing but the music to fill the silence. Two songs play in their entirety before a third song comes on.
“Oh this is my favorite,” Wille says as they jump up. They extend their hand to help pull Simon up.
The song is slower than any of the ones that had played previously. Simon wasn’t paying attention to the words because all of his attention was on Wille who was placing their hands on his waist. Matching them, he brought his arms up, wrapping them around Wille’s neck.
The light post above them acted as a spotlight as the two danced around the parking lot. As the song plays, Simon grows more and more relaxed with every passing second. Carefree and enjoying the moment with the person they love.
At one point, Wille manages to spin Simon causing him to giggle. But like all songs do, the end came eventually. It had given way to a faster and more upbeat song but they didn’t care. They continued to slow dance to their own beat. The pair slowly ended their dance but stayed close to each other. Wille looked down into Simon’s eyes, smiling.
“That was… amazing.” They say, happiness laces their voice as they speak.
Without a moment of hesitation, Simon stands on his tiptoes as his lips meet Wille’s. He feels them smile against their lips before returning the kiss.
Wille is the first to pull away, a smile on their face yet again, telling Simon everything that he needed to know. He brushes a lone strand of hair out of Wille’s face, smiling up at them as he does.
“Thank you for an amazing night.”
“Who says the night is ending?” Wille asks. “The night is young, Simme! Our adventure isn’t over yet.”

nightmare
pairing: wilhelm & linda genre: angst, comfort, fluff warnings: mentions of nightmares & anxiety wc: 479 | masterlist
Wilhelm awoke with a gasp, being pulled violently out of his dream. It was one that he had been having often, almost every night since Erik had died. He was stuck watching him die, unable to do anything to stop the course of the world.
Tonight had been no different, except when he woke up he wasn’t in his own bed. He looked over next to him and saw Simon, sleeping peacefully. Wilhelm was almost jealous of him. Carefully, he reached out to Simon’s bedside table, and grabbed his phone. The time flashed up at him. 3:47a.m. There was almost no sense in trying to fall back to sleep. These nightmares often left a lasting feeling of anxiety that he couldn’t shake for hours.
After a few moments of deliberation about what to do next, he finds himself sliding out of bed, hoping to make it out without waking his sleeping boyfriend. It was the last thing he wanted to do. Simon already had to deal with enough, he wasn’t about to ruin his sleep.
The rest of the house is quiet, presumably everyone had been asleep for hours. Wille takes a seat on the couch, hoping that scrolling on his phone would be a good enough distraction.
He isn’t sure how long he’s sitting there before he hears a door open. Looking up, his eyes meet Linda’s. She looks shocked to see him at first but the shock quickly turns into concern.
“What are you doing out here?” She asks as she takes a seat next to him.
“Nightmare.” He answered with a shrug.
“Oh, love. Do you have them a lot?”
“They’ve been happening a lot more since my brother died.” Wille isn’t sure what makes him admit to it. Something about Linda had always been so comforting and soft. He didn’t stand a chance. “They aren’t that bad, they just make me feel really anxious. I don’t really know why.”
Linda only hums in acknowledgement.
“I’ll be right back.” She says as she stands up from her seat on the couch.
Wilhelm watches in confusion as she walks into the kitchen. He can’t see her from where he is seated but he can hear her rummaging about the room. She comes back minutes later with two mugs in her hand.
“What’s this?” Wilhelm asks, getting handed one of the mugs.
“Hot cocoa.” She answers. “Nothing better to settle your thoughts like a nice warm drink.”
“You didn’t have to do this.” Wilhelm protests, suddenly feeling embarrassed.
“It’s really no problem.”
The two sit in silence as they sip on their drinks. Eventually, Wilhelm sets his mug down and finds himself able to relax a bit, on the couch next to Linda. The calm of the situation eventually lulls him back to sleep.
“Goodnight Wille,” Linda says softly, placing a kiss on the boy's forehead.

Monday came faster than they would’ve liked it too which is why Wilhelm found themself standing in front of Simon’s door, a copy of In The Dark tucked firmly under their arm. They stood there as minutes ticked by, trying to will themself to knock on the door. But if they were being honest, they were dreading this. They were dreading the whole project. Eventually they’re able to pull their hand up and knock. After a few moments, the door is pulled open and they are met with someone who looks entirely unfamiliar. Panic starts to fill them - what if they knocked on the wrong door, what if Simon forgot and was hanging out with friends, what if they turned and walked away.
“Uh, I’m here to work on a project with Simon.” Their voice remains quiet as they talk.
“Oh yeah, come on in bro.” They step back allowing for Wille to walk inside. “He’s in his room. I’ll go and grab him for you.”
Wilhelm just nods as they stand in the kitchen and wait. Their eyes gaze over everything they can see. The kitchen is small but filled to the brim with different ingredients to cook with. The living room is littered with pillows and blankets. There is a homey feeling to the place.
Simon steps out of his room and his eyes immediately land on Wilhelm. “Hi Wilhelm.” he says, giving Wille a small smile as he walks closer. “I heard you met Ayub. He’s my roommate but he’ll be in his room for the most of the time you’re here. Probably.”
The pair take a seat at the kitchen table. Wille sets down their copy of the book. They open to cover, meaning to turn to the first page of the book but Simon stops them.
“Wait. Holy shit.” Simon’s voice is filled with amazement. “You bought a signed copy?”
Shit. They grabbed the wrong one before they left. They had meant to grab one of the plethora of regular hardcover copies they had but of course they had to grab this one.
“Oh, it was my friends. I was telling her about this project and she said she had the book. She’s letting me borrow hers so I don’t have yo buy my own,” they tell Simon, thinking on their feet.
“That’s so fucking cool. I’ve been trying to find one for months!”
“I’ll ask her where she got it from if you want.”
They had been working on this project for less than a week and lies were already starting to pile up.
“So,” Simon says, opening his own copy of the book. “What did you think of the beginning?”
“I thought it set up quite nicely for the rest of the story and the introduction to the characters really showed the two personalities. Im excited to see how they develop together.” Wilhelm says. They had been thinking about what to say since the night before. Once the final word left their mouth, they took a breath hoping they didn’t say too much.
After too many beats of silence have passed, they look up to see Simon staring at them.
“What?” They ask.
“Nothing.” Simon says shaking his head. “Anyways, I think the beginning is my favorite part. You can already see Lucas’s dependence on Nathan but the want to be the one taking care of him instead.”
“Yeah! Also, it’s almost like Lucas expects more from himself while everyone else underestimates him. You can see that when Nathan doesn’t believe him in the first chapter then later on in the fourth, when the brothers are talking to their parents, they almost talk down to Lucas even though it isn’t necessary.”
Wille lets themself get lost in the conversation for a bit, not normally having the ability to talk about their work like this. All of their friends had read it when it first came out to show their support but none of them had been invested in it enough to talk about it with Wille. At least not like this.
The two finish up in a little over an hour. After planning for the next time they want to meet - Wille is saying goodbye and walking out the door. On their walk home, their mind is swimming. Still excited about the ability to be able to talk to Simon like this. Maybe someone would finally be able to understand the book in the way Wille did when they were writing it.

Wilhelm gave themself a few hours before Simon was supposed to be over to clean up their apartment. They weren’t the neatest person so they wanted to give themself enough time to get everything in order. They also wanted to make sure that any of their In The Dark items were tucked away somewhere that Simon would never see them. Only a few people knew they were the true author of the novel. Their parents didn’t even know.
When they first published the book, they were freshly 18 years old and the thought of their book getting big and their whole life being flipped upside down was daunting. So, the book was published under a penname - Dylan Bodin. The longer the book was out, the more grateful Wilhelm was that they had decided to do this. The book didn’t really gain any traction during the first year after it was published but for some reason, just a few weeks after the one year publication anniversary, it seemingly blew up. It sat on the top of bestseller lists for months. Thousands of copies were sold and Dylan Bodin was now known worldwide. Countless sources tried to find the face behind the name but each time they proved unsuccessful.
Now, it felt all too late to tell the world who they really were - not that they wanted to. Knowing that Simon was a fan of their works caused Wille to be even more on edge about things. They know their work better than anyone, even the people they’ve seen online who claim their own theories as truth. Wilhelm doesn’t want to slip up and say something that isn’t known by anyone but the author. They’re going to have to watch their words.
They’re only snapped out of their head when they hear light knocks at the door. Quickly they grab their phone to check the time. 6:58. It must be Simon.

Simon had taken a seat on the couch and Wille sat across from them on the floor, notebooks from the both of the spread across the coffee table that separates them.
“So do you have the book?” Simon asks them.
“No, I was planning on getting it tomorrow.”
Lies.
“Okay. How about since tomorrow is Friday, we take the weekend to read the first 5 chapters and discuss them on Monday?” Simon suggests.
“That sounds good.” Wille says with a nod.
They have no intention of reading anything - at least the beginning. They know the beginning of the book better than they know the back of their hand. Back when they were still writing the early drafts, the beginning always stayed the same. So, they had grown quite familiar to it. They loved it. Hated it. Grew fond of what it became. But they knew it, front to back.
“Are you sure that’s okay?” Simon asks, sounding unconvinced by their answer.
“Yeah, meet on Monday then?”
“Yeah, we can meet at my place at 6?”
“Sounds good.” There’s a pause. “Why do you like this book so much? You pushed hard for us to do the project with it.”
“I don’t really know.” Simon admits. “I just felt a connection to Lucas.”
Wille nods. Lucas is the younger of the two main characters and Wille’s favorite. They had written Lucas when they were the same age as him - 16 - and he was their outlet. Whenever they would write, they could just focus on Lucas and everything would start to fade away.
“Lucas is the younger of the two main characters. They’re brothers.” Simon explains. “I just, Lucas always wants to do what’s best, especially for the people he loves. I don’t know. But something about that drew me in.”
“Hey. No spoilers.” They say with a small laugh.
But they know.
