About the Sylph of Void?

Class summary

Sylphs typically use their Aspect to heal, or heal that Aspect. They are classified canonically as “Witches, but more magical.” They also typically have some great hindrance they must overcome, which is both determined by their aspect and, to a more specific degree, personality, to be able to fully master their aspect. One of the most mysterious Classes in Homestuck.

Aspect summary

Void players generally deal with absence, nothingness. Secrets, discreetness, and things that are hidden, metaphorically and literally. Sometimes they can manipulate the amount of absence an object or being has, making something or someone disappear or reappear, regardless of whether it/they already existed or are currently existing somewhere else. Generally good with puzzles and keeping secrets, and often have a close relationship with the Horrorterrors, as their domain is purely void. Whether the relationship is good or bad is generally determined by the player’s class, but is not limited to those boundaries, and is oftentimes determined by the player’s specific personality and knowledge of these mysterious beings. One of the most mysterious Aspects in Homestuck.

Void Sylphs

The pair of these combined to create a Sylph of Void makes one of the most mysterious and controversial Classpects ever. This is why if you go into the “Sylph of Void” or “Void Sylph” tag, you’ll find more than a few theories about it.

Personality Traits; Mortal

There’s a difference between the personality of a fully realized Void Sylph and a mortal Void Sylph, as there is with any Classpect. 

Mortal Void Sylphs are generally introverted. If not that, they are extremely extroverted and can’t stand being alone at all. They are always the one person who is confided in, and a motto one might use to calm down a friend is “I’ll take care of it. Don’t worry about it. I’ll take the stress away.” Great at keeping secrets, although sometimes they can’t tell whether or not something should be kept secret at all, which leads to significant problems sometimes. They might feel it’s their responsibility to make sure everyone else is happy and sometimes forget about themselves, leaving them feeling kind of empty, although the source of this emptiness is not always known to them. Sometimes they are entirely aware of it and don’t wish to worry anyone else, keeping it a secret. In fact, they might have many secrets about themselves they keep hidden, usually purely for the good of others. When dealing with stress, ignorance is their friend. To fully master their Aspect they must learn to deal with the emptiness inside of them and find a way to heal it. Or, if they cannot, they simply ignore it or pretend it’s not there at all. Generally may feel inferior to others, like they are meant to be placed in a role of servitude, although as long as the morals behind it are sound they are perfectly happy with this. Generally not confident in places of power, but can still adapt if it’s necessary. In fact, they are some of the most adaptable players you can have, simply ignoring things that may get in the way of an objective, ableit sometimes to the fault of ignorance, which can hinder the team further. Do not anger a Void Sylph. They will defend what they truly believe in and those they love fiercely. While passive to things they believe are right, they become offensive towards those they believe are wrong. Great listeners however. They’ll take any time at all to listen to someone’s problems. If they purely believe that this isn’t a problem, they’ll be very upfront. Appearing honest but underneath, very secretive. Love puzzles and anything complicated, treasure hunts, and theories about books or TV shows, anything that connects hidden things or tries to uncover the unknown. Good at hiding themselves, so they’re great spies.

Personality Traits; Fully Realized/Godteir

At this point they’ve overcome the “empty” feeling, learning to either banish it or accept it. This can be done any way necessary, although if not done properly it can come back to bite them later. They’re much better at telling whether or not something should be kept a secret, and if something does need to be hidden, the exceed at this. Go-to people for advice, they’ll be happy to help. Much more open about their own personality if the realization is done right. If not, they’re even more secretive before, and this can sometimes lead to the death of their teammates. While they’re good for confiding in if they’re needed, they often will isolate themselves from the group, making them hard to get to, even if they’ll oblige willingly if there’s a problem. Ask them to be completely honest about themselves, however, and they’ll close up, and try to leave the conversation, even if they have nothing to hide.

Grimdarkness

Void players are generally very close to the Horrorterrors, and whether positively or negatively is up to them. Well, not entirely, but as much as the game can really allow. Grimdarkness is a very flexible area for everyone, so keep in mind that you don’t have to follow this at all.

A Void Sylph would generally know at least a little about the Horrorterrors and Grimdarkness, at least if only by instinct. There are many ways to get them to go Grimdark. They might have to be forced to stop ignoring things to get past them, made to face the reality of their problems, and they’ll become stressed and angered. Their enemy here is being faced with utter truth, being forced to shed any secrecy or ignorance at all. Forcing them to tell their secrets can be used as well.

If any Void player were to go Grimdark, especially one who is fully realized, there is essentially no hope to the session. Void players, already having a powerful Aspect, will be unstoppable under the influence of the Horrorterrors. The only way to ensure any victory at all would be to kill them or Scratch the session.

Powers

In general, these are situation governed, so be aware that sometimes they may not work.

Memory Removal/Manipulation; If a player is particularly traumatized by certain memories and it causes problems in the group, a Void Sylph could “heal” the memory by replacing it with nothing, essentially erasing it. They could still be told the memory, but since they did not essentially experience it, this would no longer pose any problems. This is useful for curing phobias or settling arguments. If a Void Sylph were to use this for evil intentions however, they could theoretically torture someone to get something, then erase the memory and pretend nothing happened.

Human Flashlight; This one’s a bit more for shits and giggles. Basically, if it’s really dark somewhere, a Void Sylph would glow, like a vampire/rainbow drinker.

Void Removal; This one’s a bit tricky. While this cannot be used on themselves, a Void Sylph would be able to fill that “empty” feeling one might have. For example, if you have that feeling like something is missing, but you don’t know what it is, the Slyph would play the role in filling that.

Disappear; Perhaps something is troubling the teammates. At a high level of mastery, a Void Sylph could essentially just make it vanish. Poof. Gone. 

Dream Bubbles; A Sylph of Void may play a role in putting up Dream Bubbles so that their teammates can talk to dead people, or communicate while in dreams.

Invisibility; This is a given for any Void player. They may make themselves and/or their teammates completely invisible. 

Heal; Any healing that has to do with removal. This does not attribute to physical wounds. It only deals with the psychological. A personality trait, or, once again, memories.

Resurrect; Basically, removing the deadness factor from a player.

Calm; Now, this one is very interesting. A Sylph of Void could essentially calm someone from a fit of rage, removing the distracting feelings, or simply shrouding them. The reason this is so interesting is because this also applies to Grimdarkness. The Void Sylph is one of the only players that can remove Grimdarkness. This, however, does not mean they can’t become Grimdark themselves. (see above)

Land of Dew and Shadows (LODAS)

Land of Shackles and Torment (LOSAT)

Land of Peace and Patience (LOPAP)

Land of Nerves and Glare (LONAG)

Also, here’s a short bit about it;

On the surface, your land is bright but still softened, empty, with many softly sloping hills and tunnel entrances. As you enter into the many areas of organized consorts (dark brown cat-like bipedals), you’ll find that the world becomes much more lively and a bit more chaotic! The world itself is very complex, and the consort’s many organized cities/civilizations are even more so. There is so much to explore and learn. Your quest is to create something that the land needs or create something to improve the land overall, and the different-colored luminescent orbs will guide you where you need to go. You must collect hidden puzzle pieces and assemble an ancient puzzle at the center of the planet, which when completed will unlock your denizen’s chamber, where you will be given The Choice. Your Choice is either to let the denizen free to rule over the feuding consorts (or at least try to, which may not work. it depends on how much you trust your denizen), or seal the denizen away again and try to do it yourself. If the denizen/you succeed, your quest bed will be revealed and you can ascend to god tier.

Challenge

I addressed this earlier obviously, saying one would need to try and “fill their void.” But also, they would need to be more self-aware. As in, focus more on their own wants and needs. They are very selfless, but they often forget about themselves

For anyone who wants a free pose-able human reference for drawing

The other day I came across this awesome program by accident (I don’t even remember what I was actually searching for, but on the several times I’ve looked for a program like this I’ve had no luck). It’s cool enough that I wanted to share it.

It’s called DesignDoll (website here) and it’s a program that lets you shape and pose a human figure pretty much however you want.

There’s a trial version with no expiration date that can be downloaded for free, as well as the “pro license” version priced at $79. I’ve only had the free version for two days so far, so I’m not an expert and I haven’t figured out all of the features yet, but I’ve got the basics down. The website’s tutorials are actually pretty helpful for the basics, as well. 

Here’s the page for download, which has a list of the features available in both versions.

There are three features the free version doesn’t have:

Can’t save OBJ files for export

Can’t download models and poses from Doll Atelier (a sharing site for users; note that the site is in Japanese, though)

It can’t load saved files

The third one means that if you make a pose, save it, and close the program, you can’t load that pose/modified model later. You have to start with the default model. I found that out when I tried to load a file from the day before (this is why reading is important…). Whether saving your modifications (and downloading models and poses) is worth $80 is up to you. 

But, the default model is pretty nice and honestly if all you’re looking for is a basic pose reference it should work fairly well as it is. Here’s what it looks like:

There’s a pose tag that lets you drag each joint into place and rotate body parts. The torso and waist can be twisted separately, and it seems like everything pretty much follows the range of movement it would have on an actual human.

Even the entire shoulder area is actually movable along with the joint! See, like how the scapular area of the back raises with the arm:

The morphing tag is one of the coolest features, in my opinion. It lets you pick and choose from a library of pre-set forms for the head, chest, arms, legs, etc. It has some more realistic body shapes in addition to more anime-like ones. Don’t like the options there? Mix a few to get what you want! Each option has a slider that lets you blend as much or as little as you want into the design. 

So you, too, can create beautiful things like kawaii Muscle-chan!!

The scale tag lets you mess with the proportions and connection points of different joints. This feature combined with the morphing feature not only allows more body shape variations, but it also means that you can do things like make a more digitigrade model if you want. (The feet only have an ankle joint, but for regular human poses that’s all that you really need, so whatever.)

Or you can make a weird chubby alien-like thing with giant hands and balloon tiddies if that’s more your thing.

The ability to pose hands to the extent it allows is far more than I could have hoped for from a free program. Seriously, you can change the position of each finger joint individually, as well as how spread out the fingers are from each other. Each crease on the diagram below is a point of movement, and the circles are for spread between fingers. 

And to make it a bit more convenient, there’s a library of pre-set hand poses you can pick from as well, and then change the pose from that if you like. 

In both versions, you can also import OBJ files from other places for the model to hold, like if you wanted to have them hold a sword or something.

Basically, this program is awesome and free and you should totally check it out if you want a good program for creating pose references.
