hey im an incoming freshman for Fall 2018 and i just found this blog. being born and raised in texas i know lgbtqa+ communities are fairly hard to come by, but how’s the community on campus? im a nonbinary ace and im worried about having to stay in the closet even longer than i thought. im also hoping to make some friends through the community.
Hello friend!! We are so happy you reached out to us! Yes, being a part of the LGBTQ+ community and living in East Texas does have its challenges, but we as an organization work really hard to provide safe spaces for our members!! Additionally, PRIDE Nac is a social-based organization! We strive to connect the LGBTQ+ students within our campus through meetings, socials, and on-campus events!! The campus, as a whole, is a generally safe campus and there are protections specifically for LGBTQ+ students under Title IX. We hope to see you soon in the fall!! Make sure to follow us on Twitter & Instagram to stay more updated on what’s happening with the org!! 🏳️🌈💜🏳️🌈

Last night brought sweeping wins for candidates of color and LGBTQ candidates in local elections across the country. A few of note:
Danica Roem, an out transgender woman, defeated an extremely anti-LGBTQ conservative incumbent for a seat in the Virginia state legislature
Andrea Jenkins became the first trans woman of color elected to public office with her seat on the Minneapolis City Council
Jenny Durkan was elected mayor of Seattle, making her the first lesbian to hold the position
Zachary DeWolf became the first out gay man elected to Seattle’s school board
Tyler Titus won a seat on the school board in Erie, Pennsylvania, making him the first transgender man to win elective office in that state
Ravinder Bhalla became the first Sikh mayor elected in New Jersey, as the new mayor of Hoboken
Vi Lyles is the first black woman to be mayor of Charlotte
Kathy Tran is the first Asian-American woman elected to the Virginia House of Delegates
Melvin Carter III is the first mayor of color in St. Paul, Minnesota
Did I miss any? Please reblog and add more! And remember, while this is an amazing start, the work is far from over. We’ve got our eyes on you, 2018.

Bye to everyone who says this is just a phase. Bye to those who don’t give you recognition as a member of our community. Bye to the ones who question you for every person you’re interested in. Bye to substances that tear us down like tobacco, which claims tens of thousands of us each year, when we have the power to build each other up. You are real. You matter. You are so much more than they know. Time to say hi to your bi pride.
