Starlito and Don Trip dropped Step Brothers Three (March 15) and I still cannot get over the first song on the album! “Yeah 5x,” which samples Heather Headley’s “In My Mind,” instantly pulled me in. Lito and Trip are two artists that I will admit I have not listened to heavily over the years (I know, I know shame on me…) However, “Yeah 5x” makes me want to reevaluate a few things. I appreciate the ways in which the duo illustrate and share pieces of their own lives, touching on many issues that others can undoubtedly relate to. What I can appreciate most is that they do so without glorifying OR bashing a lifestyle that many fail to understand. 

Be sure to check out “Yeah 5x” and see if you can pick apart some of these issues. Remember, music reflects much of what takes place within our communities whether we like it or not.

Lately I’ve found a greater appreciation for underground music and artists… “Trap” music just took on a brand new connotation. Much of the gritty, authentic sounds from the “trap” do not make it mainstream, but instead remains trapped underground. I imagine that these artists may at times feel unheard or unappreciated. To those artists I would like to say this: We hear you, we appreciate you, and we support you.
