The awkward part about this is that 0.5% of your income is chump change at that point.
Like, I make 6-figs, and I would happily give up $500 a year if it meant people could have a place to live, literal no brainer.
anyway jeff bezos could eradicate homelessness. he could literally give each homeless person 100k and it would only take less than .5% of his entire wealth. what the actual god giving fuck

A federal judge temporarily blocked construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, ruling late Thursday that the Trump administration had failed to justify its decision granting a permit for the 1,200-mile long project designed to connect Canada’s oil sands fields with Texas’ Gulf Coast refineries. The judge, Brian Morris of the U.S. District Court in Montana, said the State Department ignored crucial issues of climate change in order to further the president’s goal of letting the pipeline be built. In doing so, the administration ran afoul of the Administrative Procedure Act, which requires “reasoned” explanations for government decisions, particularly when they represent reversals of well-studied actions. It was a major defeat for Trump, who attacked the Obama administration for stopping the project in the face of protests and an environmental impact study. Trump signed an executive order two days into his presidency setting in motion a course reversal on the Keystone XL pipeline, as well as another major pipeline, Dakota Access. The ruling highlights a broader legal vulnerability in the Trump administration’s push to roll back Obama-era environmental protections. Since Trump took office, federal courts have found repeatedly that his agencies have short-circuited the regulatory process in areas ranging from water protections to chemical plant safety operations. Robust environmental and administrative procedure laws, many dating back to the 1970s, have given the administration’s opponents plenty of legal ammunition.

Its a bizarre time to be alive.
My uncle passed away yesterday. I don’t remember much about him- just that he made me vaguely uncomfortable and drank a lot and was overly affectionate. I say “overly affectionate” because that was the phrase offered by my mother when I complained that he made me uncomfortable, but I think by today’s standard he could probably just be a child molester. He was the kind of uncle you would make sure you were never alone in a room with, the kind that would goose (for the kids, that means grab or pinch your ass) the barely pubescent girls at holidays as they walked by with food, and drag you into his lap when you felt you were too old for that kind of thing (before you realized you were too young for that kind of thing) and give you big, wet, sloppy, vaguely creepy kisses on the mouth.
He made a lot of racist jokes, loved racial slurs, and served in the navy. He loved his family and was appropriately affectionate towards his adult cousins.
When I was growing up, everyone had “that uncle” or “that grandpa” you just had to guard yourself against. It was part of puberty, learning to suddenly interact with family members that saw you as a woman rather than a child, figuring out on your own why your uncle or cousin that just last year barely noticed you was now “overly affectionate’, learning how to navigate entendres that got thrown around and over your head without being so hostile they were justified in punishing you.
We live in strange times. In those days, it was your fault for not protecting yourself, even when you were ignorant of sex and rape and all the weird social relationship changes that go with it. Listen, I know a lot of men who go running at night, and get black-out drunk regularly, and spend lots of time by themselves in public.
When are people going to realize: the risk factors aren’t your behavior, they’re being a woman and knowing a criminal? And you can’t get away from being a woman. And when everyone defends the criminals, it feels like everyone IS a criminal. I’m tired of the excuses.

This (wild) sloth was so close to me I could have touched it. Contrary to popular belief, these guys can really move quite quickly, so I have very few in-focus photos (his face is blurry even here).

Graduate from top university. Get your first livable-wage job. Payoff your loans. Regain confidence. Realize that even the worst day after uni is better than the best day in. Buy nice clothes because you want them. Build an intimidating aura and a gentle personality. Treat low level staff politely, using please, thank you, miss, and sir. Tip high (remember how long it took you to scrape together $30 for the shady cash-only dentist when you chipped your tooth?). Cultivate an appreciation for the beauty of everything around you. Remember what it felt like to be poor, exhausted, alone, and crippled with anxiety and depression. Help other people avoid your negative experiences whenever possible. Work to change the system, even though you are not longer apart of it, even if it means only supporting the ones who can. Open doors for others, especially when it means you’ll be surpassed. Weed out the negative competitive and compliant behaviors in yourself that got you through uni. Never forget how it felt.

Do not tell everyone your story. You will only end up feeling more rejected. People cannot give you what you long for in your heart. The more you expect from people’s response to your experience of abandonment, the more you will feel exposed to ridicule.
