Do you think isabela is the only faction leader without a dynamic duo so you can imagine a hawke that's supposed to be there (but maybe isn't bc they got left in the fade)
#I am unironically considering this#started a second playthrough#now as a lord of fortune#and can't stop thinking about Isaac moving to Rivain#maybe I should retcon his farm in Ferelden for the sake of chilling on the beach with Isabela?#Isaac is half rivaini and Isabela is his best friend#sure Anders will love Rivain too since they treat mages better#I can hear Hawke haunting the narrative when someone says LOF don't steal cultural stuff#yeah sure they don't Isaac is too fucking old to fight Arishok for the second time if Isabela fucks up again#veilguard spoilers

What if your grief was so profound that the departed overshadowed the living? What if you longed to see your beloved daughter again to such an extent that you began to see her face in those who remain, even though they bear no resemblance to her? And what if this misplaced love of yours had doomed them?
Sorry I need to stop psychoanalyzing the evil grandma. This is getting embarassing.

hey harker! very much enjoying the lucanis/illario/general crow posting, and im gonna encourage more: now that you’ve had some time to sit with the game i was really curious to hear more about your opinion on lucanis becoming first talon. i can’t help but feel like it’s completely glossed over that lucanis is definitely going to get chewed up by this job in most save states. i have mixed feelings about it personally - but setting those aside because i’m asking about yours.
i TRULY cannot express this enough: that villa is a tomb and if we do not get him out of there we are burying him in it
lucanis does not want this job. he has straight up canonically always avoided thinking about this by assuming he would die before it becomes something he has to deal with. he reacts with paralysed disbelief to being given it and seems to have barely registered it for the rest of the game. and even if he did want it, lucanis is not capable of this job. none of his skillsets are managing people, or making ruthless calls, or watching out for himself. the only driving force behind him being pushed into this is caterina, who will not be around to do the admin and protect him from external threats forever. and she only wants him to do it in the first place because she had a good heir—his mother—and has needed to project that dead daughter onto lucanis for his whole life, to believe she hasn’t already gambled and irrevocably lost her family’s future decades ago. but lucanis’ incapacity to ever say no to her, which is what lets him stay that eternal teacher’s pet, is one of the most obvious shining examples why he would be so bad for the job!
it would be an uphill battle for anyone to recover control of an assassin house that until last week was being run by your cousin who tried to kill you. it would be an uphill battle for anyone to lead the crows in the aftermath of the antaam occupation. it would be an uphill battle for anyone to cope with the fact that relying on viago and teia—which lucanis with his resources and skills has no choice but to do here, even if he didn’t simply like them and make choices based on liking people because he is not a strategist—presents them as an alliance that any other ambitious talon must cut down to get anywhere. three out of eight of the talons is such a ludicrously dangerous number. it does not take an overwhelmingly brilliant mind to notice that there’s more of us than there are of them
the best man for the job would still be fighting for their life, and lucanis is far from the best man. caterina was! and she still lost five children and six grandchildren holding it! that’s so many! have you guys ever seen that one post about people who kept getting a new outdoor cat every time the last one got eaten by cougars and it was pointed out they were basically just feeding cats to the cougars. that’s what caterina dellamorte was doing having kids
the points in lucanis’ favour off the top of my head are the weight of the dellamorte name and reputation, that his victory over illario was decisive and public, and simply the fear factor that he is a god slayer and, lest we forget, a fucking abomination. is that enough to keep him alive? for how long? under what level of constant anxiety and moral degradation for his very soft over-caffeinated heart? all for the questionable gain of several large and empty villas and the privilege of dragging out the slow and lingering death of a family that, you guessed it, you love it, it’s the thedas favourite: has no! next! generation! heirs! at all!!!
(unless illario has a bunch of kids somewhere. i think that would be objectively pretty funny, a sentence i managed to type most of before feeling ill. oh god we need to get them out.)
i apologise that my tone here is somewhat hysterical but i have been living in the mind of my rook, a character very aware of the realities of crow politics who loves lucanis very much. it does not surprise me that lucanis was once again incapable of even conceptualising saying no to his grandmother and accepted the title, or that the idea of abandoning her legacy and his family would seem insurmountable to him when he has been raised to believe it’s all he’s for and he is the last one shouldering the weight. but i am saying this with total and absolute confidence: this is another prison and he is going to die in there if nobody gets him out.
#I can't help but wonder if Caterina Dellamorte was named so after Caterina Sforza#an italian noblewoman who was very cunning and kinda brutal#she ruthlessly pursued her enemies and legend has it that when Orsi family threatened to murder her children for her refusal to surrender#she climbed the walls of the fortress raised up her skirt to show her private parts and said#And do you not think fools that I have the molds to make more?#veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers

Antivan crows treatment [obviously spoilers]
I do NOT agree with the popular sentiment that the crows got sanitized in this game. I DO have questions about crow related writing choices but this is not the choice I have problems with.
Showing one concept, event, place or a person from multiple perspectives is one of the core features of dragon age series. We always had different and sometimes contradicting views on the same thing. For example, the Circle as Vivienne sees it and the Circle as Anders sees it are two very different Circles. It's not bad writing, it's how biases, personal experiences and opinions work. I would like to remind you that Solas says about spirits' perspectives on Ostagar – no matter how different the visions are, they are both real.
Zevran and Lucanis are different as night and day. Obviously a whore's son (no offense) and first talon's grandchild would have different experiences. So would crow Rook, who gets special princess treatment from Viago, also a talon. So would Viago, who is the antivan king's bastard. So would Teia, who considers the crows her family, since she never had one to begin with. They all either joined the crows willingly or were born into it. They weren't sold to the crows by brothel madam like Zevran was.
And at the end of the day, the crows are still assassins. Even being first talon's favorite grandchild won't save you from abuse and literal torture. You are still supposed to undergo the harsh training that will leave you without food and water for days and Maker knows what else. You still work with people who strive for power and would do anything to obtain it. House Arannai changed 6 talons throughout 20 years. Half of the talons were murdered in tevinter nights by the traitor who sold them out to qunari. Dellamorte family almost got wiped out. Some npc casually says Viago would be very sad if he had to kill crow Rook but that he would still do it anyway if necessary. The crows literally made Jacobus, a literal child, full fledged assassin in front of our eyes. What other proof of crows being shitty people need? A quest line where we personally torture children? Do you really want this to be so on the nose?
Yes, the crows are treated like the good guys by the narrative and there are pretty good reasons for that. 1) We can play as a crow and it SHOULD give us, the player, a bias 2) There are more important tasks at hand. We are fighting gods. We aren't fighting for the wellbeing of Antiva, we are fighting for the wellbeing of reality itself. With such high stakes crows shittyness is absolutely irrelevant 3) The crows are Antiva's one and only defense. No matter how shitty they are, without them, it will be worse 4) Glorification of organized crime is a thing that happens in real life and I thought we liked our games somewhat realistic.
I can go as far as sharing some personal info on the last part. I like the crows very much because I grew up in the area so riddled with crime an average person from rich white neighborhood would lose their mind. The best governor our fucked up city ever had was the local gangster. Crime was family business to him and that's why he cared for the city more than other governors – his children would have to live here after he dies. The dude killed people for money but the city was finally clean and pretty and much safer than it used to be. I don't have a problem with antivan crows being batman-ized because I've seen so happen irl. Is it sad that sometimes only mafia can keep a city from falling apart? Yes. But it is real and that's why it is beautiful. Veilguard feels very realistic to me and I don't get the bad writing claims. I guess our governor wasn't realistic enough, I'll tell him if I meet his ghost.
The problem I have with the crows is how the Ivenci/Butcher plot was handled. It felt like it was rushed and added at the last moment. I'm not against Ivenci as a villain, I am simply mourning the lost potential. The plot could have been much better if Rook started to suspect something is wrong on their own. Extra scenes with Butcher to flesh out the character more would have benefited the quest line. I'm glad that Veilguard added some positive qunari rep with Taash and Shathann but there could have been more. Bioware could have told us WHY the Butcher decided to desert. He seems to have more respect for qunari philosophy than other antaam leaders. Why couldn't he stay with his Arishok, then? There is a huge difference between bad writing and the lack of writing. Ivenci and Butcher aren't badly written, they simply lack screen time.
My overall opinion of the game is very positive. Yeah, it could have been better. But it also could have been much worse. There could always been more time to plan, more tools to use, more choices to explore. But things never work out the way you want them to. I think given the circumstances and EA's desire to make live service games, bioware gave us their best shot. Regret is nothing but pride, vanity and a waste of time. The game itself says so. And I would rather enjoy the game as it is than waste my time thinking what it could have been.

imagine being illario and finally finding the resolve to kill your cousin right. you seduce and fuck a blood mage venatori magister to get her to do this for you. you figure you’ll eventually kill her once you are first talon, tie up the loose end and make it look good for you. a vengeance story! except when your cousin’s body shows up your grandma retreats into herself presumably out of grief and you’re like jesus christ he’s a corpse and still the favorite. at this point you start feeling some regret and at the wake you’re beside yourself. it helps to be really feeling some of that to fool everyone else. but months pass and your grandma still isn’t even discussing the inheritance and you have to be normal because you don’t want to incriminate yourself. and then a year later some random guy (worse if its a de riva tbh) shows up saying they need your cousin to kill an elven god (what.) and he’s the only one who could (insulting). and its at this point your grandma is like “lucanis died… but he is not dead!”. record scratch freezeframe. while you juggle with the fact that the freak woman you fucked specifically to get her to kill your cousin didn’t even kill your cousin AND your grandma didn’t bother telling you (for good reason ofc but she doesn’t know that), you have to lead these assholes to go save him and unravel your hard work. so plan b. you kidnap your grandma and push your (now possessed) cousin away (and then get mad when he actually walks away. because you’re like this). and when your cousin comes dangerously close to figuring out what’s happened with you and the magister, you kill the magister. you ally with those elven gods and venatori (you aren’t sure how you’re going to get out of this one but it’s fine. that’s a hill for future illario) to make sure you have enough backing to stand up against the other houses if they challenge you becoming first talon. you continue to gaslight your cousin into staying away, because if there is one thing you can count on, it’s his literal inner demons and total lack of a support group, you’re certain he’ll fuck it up by himself. you know this because his support group used to be your grandma (dubious) and yourself (lol). you’re almost home free. and caterina will definitely acknowledge you as a player on the board. which isn’t important but it would be nice, right. BUT THEN IT TURNS OUT. YOUR COUSIN HAS RECENTLY MADE 7 FRIENDS. one of whom can speak to the fucking dead because of course he can. and then some of those friends show up to publicly humiliate you at the dinner party that should have been YOUR crowning moment. your grandma ALSO shows up to tell everyone you have gathered that your cousin is first talon. your cousin gapes at her because he doesn’t actually even want it so it’s kind of awkward for everyone. and then when you’re sure he’s about to ask viago de riva to poison you to death, he actually tells him just to take you away. because OF COURSE he’s being the bigger person. anyways the point is i’m surprised illario just lets himself be taken away because if i were him i would have started biting people and then bombed the villa
#I'm obsessed with the turn of events where Lucanis just lets him go#Illario shows up to help and fights the exact venatori he tried to ally with#while making self-deprecative jokes about himself#Mary Kirby said he would show up at Rook's and Lucanis' wedding to get hammered and tell embarrassing stories about his cousin#the beef these two have is absolutely insane#and the fact that they can try to fix it is even more insane#Illario the man that you are...#veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers

#yes#not because it suits him (it doesn't) but for the story potential#can you imagine the fucked up dynamic?#Rook be like yeah honey I know I'm probably gonna get murdered bc of your job#and if we decide to have kids we will live in constant fear for their lives#maybe we won't even be better than your grandma who used to beat you with her cane#I'm probably gonna die in such a terrible way that leaving a ring as a message would seem like mercy#but it's okay after killing the gods I don't really mind#I don't know how to live a normal life anyway#<- this is Noel's exact thought train#I don't think Lucanis needs extra scenes because what is left unsaid in-between them is more tragic and funny when you don't say it out loud#he is so pathetic and he definitely should stay this way because well if he won't that will be a very different character#veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers

Sorry I woke up and chose violence. Person who said that Lucanis ao3 tag gave them a thousand yard stare, you are so right
I wanted to make another one about Taash and how people ignore their big lips, nose and eyebrows. But I scrolled their tag and I guess no one cares about Taash if it's not drama about their NB identity or bashing Weekes for colonialism mindset...Pretty sad.

The implications of romancing Lucanis make me unwell [Spoilers]
Being in love with the first talon of the crows is like drawing a target on your own forehead. Whoever Rook is, they will always be a way for Lucanis' enemies to get at him. By loving him, Rook basically agrees to a possibility of becoming a pawn in the crows' fight for power. Maybe even its victim.
And Lucanis knows that. Losing 11 (!) relatives during the succession crisis must be one of the many reasons he's afraid to commit. And such crises tend to occur pretty often - like a half of the talons died in tevinter nights. House Kortez was destroyed for treason. Crow Rook is also from a different house. The possibilities for soul-crushing choices are limitless. What if Rook will be forced to choose between house de Riva and house Dellamorte? Or worse, what if they will be forced to choose between Lucanis' life and the stability of antivan crows?
Viago will probably be fine without Rook's help. But what of Lucanis? He lacks Illario's charm and tongue. He is not as scary as Caterina is. He is nowhere as ruthless as cruel as other talons can be. He is an excellent professional but is he a leader? He knows that he isn't. Either the crows will be forced to change because of Lucanis, Teia and Viago, or all three of them are gonna die terrible deaths. Or four, if Rook is also there.
Not to be too dramatic but Rook, especially crow Rook who knows everything is there to know about the crows' politics, must be sitting somewhere in the Lighthouse and thinking: "Damn. I am definitely gonna die. Even if I survive the evanuris bullshit, I am still dying in the worst way possible. Maybe there will be only ring left as a message or maybe my body will be so badly disfigured that leaving only a ring would seem like mercy. I guess I do like walking too close to the edge".
Rook is so fucking stupid and that's why they are the best. People who think the game is not dark enough need to shut the fuck up and maybe think for a second. Rook's optimism in the face of existential dread brings out the contrast between light and dark beautifully.

Just have finished veilguard. The only complain I will voice rn is how little content we have with Illario Dellamorte. And how little we know of his actual thoughts, not the mask he shows. That man is truly something else. I have so many questions. Why didn't he kill Caterina and Lucanis? Does he really still care about them in his own fucked up way? How the hell did he even win the heart of Zara Renata??? Bioware you can't do this to me, I NEED some codex and context about Illario. Why did Caterina didn't like him if he is capable enough to pull this off? Is this because Lucanis' mother was her favourite child? Considering that I spared Illario and romanced Lucanis, all while also being a crow, family get togethers are gonna be awkward for sure. I kinda feel bad for Illario? Maybe he deserves a villain arc after being Dellamorte-the-lesser all his life. While Lucanis certainly cares for his cousin-brother no matter what, he still doesn't believe in Illario being capable of something. Honestly, I am glad that Caterina isn't the big bad in this story. It would be so easy and boring to make a conflict with the right ones and the wrong ones. But after playing the game I can't really blame anyone. Yes, even the old woman who used to beat the shit out of her grandchildren. Sure it was wrong but can we think for a second that out of 5 Caterina's children and 8 grandchildren only 2 survived the succession crisis? Perhaps she used to be much softer and that was the result. This is what I like about veilguard. It's not only about regret, it's about family as well. Families tend to be fucked up and messy in real life. It is raw and too complicated and also real. Now Dellamorte family lives in my head rent-free.

I'm seeing a lot of hate on the Lucanis romance for not being flirty enough.
Y'all really are stuck on the "Suave Spanish" trope, aren't ya?
Dudes got trauma he's gotta get through. He flirts with Neve as a mask, he ain't flirting with you cause it's more serious. Come on, this ain't hard.
#I am so fucking grateful that Lucanis is not a racist stereotype or a fanfiction sexyman#why is it so hard for some to admit that something is not for them?#move on and romance somebody else#lucanis romance is great#is it everything I expected? no it is better!!!#it doesn't need to be fixed#and if you think it does well maybe it's not for you??? no shame in that#I really like that it takes time for him to open up#his grounded personality and autistic swag have captivated me#I'll always choose a man who makes dessert for you specifically over an edgelord or whatever fandom expected him to be
