michael was one of those people that nevaeh knew she never had a chance with but she still kept the fantasy of them together locked away in her head. she was grieving too but in a different way, it was like she was grieving something she never even had. she would never compare it to what skyler was going through, though. "i know what you mean. my summer was kind of boring, i just stayed home and worked on art." she felt like art was one of the only outlets she had for her complex feelings. "what about you? how was your summer?"

Skyler looked up from her things, offering Nevaeh a polite smile at the sound of her voice. It was difficult to not think of Michael, even now with so much time passing. He wasn't the best boyfriend, but no matter how hard she tried the soft spot for him remained — he wasn't as bad as he made himself out to be. "I've been okay, even with everything going on in my life it's hard to not think about it, you know?" She questioned before shaking her head. "Don't let that kill the mood of being back though, how was your summer?"

nevaeh had fantasized about this moment before. when she would finally catch kier alone and they would have their moment. she didn't know who she had a crush on more, the idea of him she dreamt up in her head or the person sitting next to her right now. she would never admit that though, because she felt like it would make her sound like a delusional person. when michael died, she needed someone else to obsess over and kier, with his charm and charisma, seemed like a great replacement. as fucked up as it sounded, that was the truth of the matter.

when kier said he was enjoying the silence, nevaeh feels bad for a moment. did she ruin his peace and quiet time? she hates when people try to talk to her when she's in the zone, whether that be taking care of plants or painting. but when he said care to join me, her heart fluttered and filled with anticipation and hope. "i'd love to join you, if you don't mind, of course."

kier seo has no interest in the likes of commitment — the entirety of golden state university is no stranger to this fact, surely. but it does not stop the crushes from forming in his stead, and it certainly does not stop the bad habit kier hoards for playing with hearts.

in nevaeh's case, she's an open book to him, kier able to read past the lines. and he — turns out to be the replacement for michael. it should make him feel good, to obtain something that his enemy had. and yet. kier knows he is no more than a back—up plan, a crush that took shape as a result of rejection. that alone is enough to make bitterness linger; sickening desire to string along this girl manifesting.

when she approaches, kier's first thought is to remain silent, finger tapping at the cigarette grasped in—between index and middle fingers, but instead, he turns to meet her eyes; amusement dancing along visage, ❛ enjoying the silence. ❜ not really, he just wanted to smoke. ❛ care to join me? ❜

nevaeh and declan got on pretty well as far as nevaeh's experience with roommates. even though declan was more sociable than nevaeh, he never forced her out of her shell which she appreciated. they could just sit in silence and be comfortable, which was something nevaeh really enjoyed about their friendship. that's what they were doing currently when nevaeh decided to break the silence by saying, "hey. do you wanna go get something to eat? i'm starving."

nevaeh was a good student but god, did she hate studying. it felt like she couldn't retain any information like she used to be able to. she decided to take a break from studying and read a book for fun, something she hadn't done in a while. while she was reading, she saw someone sit next to her. she put a bookmark on the page she was on and closed the book, turning to face skyler. "hey. how have you been, since you know...everything?" she was jealous of skyler, though she'd never admit it. because skyler got to have michael in the way nevaeh never could but craved. but she was genuinely interested to see how skyler had been since michael's death.

nevaeh was starving because she didn't eat breakfast as per usual. she knows she should eat breakfast but getting up early enough to eat breakfast was always a struggle for her. so by the time lunch rolled around, her stomach was rumbling quite loudly. she grabbed a bunch of food from the stations and looked around for a place to sit. this was the hardest part, she felt like no one actually wanted her to sit next to them. she felt like she was imposing on everyone. but she didn't have a choice, given how packed the dining hall was so she found an empty seat next to lucrezia and asked, "mind if i sit here?"

nevaeh was typing furiously in her notes app. she normally didn't write in public but there was a strike of inspiration. while she was more of an artist than a writer, sometimes there were thoughts that she needed to get out and the only thing she had was her phone, not a sketchbook or canvas in sight. when she saw bryce, she waved him over. "do you think you can read this and tell me if it makes sense or if it's just a bunch of shit?" she was always doing that, talking herself down.

nevaeh easily developed crushes. it was one of her worst traits, she thought. because she always got hurt in the end. but she couldn't help it. this was how it always went, didn't it? she would fall for someone like kier and he would never actually give her the time of day. but kier knew nevaeh had a crush on him and kept stringing her along. even though, deep down, nevaeh knew it would never happen, she kept her hopes high. when she saw him at reflection pond, sitting by himself, she figured this might be her chance. "hey," she said. "what're you doing here alone?"

nevaeh had a hard time making friends. it wasn't because she wasn't friendly but for some reason, she just could never find the right people. she was grateful that no matter what happened, though, she always had her family that she could fall back on. she was feeling lonely, sitting in the cafe by herself so when she saw her cousin, she waved her over. "do you wanna sit together?" she asked aj.

"ugh! this is impossible to study for!" nevaeh put her hand between her hands. she loved plants more than the average person but she was finding it hard to concentrate on anything at the moment. "do you have any study tips?" she asks ivy, who coincidentally is also studying botany. "i need them desperately."

"yeah, i guess i never got around to seeing it," nevaeh says with a shrug. plus, why would she seek out a movie that's known to be bad? call her crazy but she mostly seeked out movies that she thought she had a good chance of liking.

"we'll see. i'm not really into superheroes or stuff like that so i dunno." while her peers were all obsessed with marvel movies, nevaeh was more into coming of age movies like the edge of seventeen and lady bird. "at least halle berry will look hot in her costumes."

"You've never seen Cat Woman? Are you serious?" That was more surprising than hearing people thought it was a bad movie. Everyone has seen Cat Woman and learning that there was one person who hadn't was basically a culture shock.

Her body immediately straightens itself out as she faces Nevaeh head on, "Thank god you're here tonight then because I know you're going to love it.. well, if you don't let anyone else's shit talking taint your views on it."

The only shit talking she should listen to is Verity's, but time will tell.

"honestly, rotting away in my bed was what i was planning on doing anyway so their plan might work on me." it sounds like a joke when she says it but was it really? nevaeh wasn't one for parties or fun because she felt like no one wanted her at the parties.

“Oh my god,” she laughs as she gives Nevaeh quick shake of her head, “What if that’s their plan all along? Get us so stuffed that we can’t do anything after this anything extra fun afterwards. No fun after parties. Just us, and our beds.”

nevaeh was nervous going back to gsu. sure, she had friends here but she secretly felt like they all secretly hated her even if they reassured her fifty times that they didn't. plus, she didn't have many friends, which was how she preferred it anyway. when she was approached by leo, she looked at the smoothie. "do you know what kind of smoothie it is?" she asks, wondering if she'd like it. she understood not wanting to correct the barista, having anxiety about that kind of thing herself.

Open Starter Location: The Corner

Another semester was beginning, and Leo was anxious to see the GSU once again filled to the brim with life. Other students were all moving into their dorms, reconnecting with old friends, finding their way around. It was nerve wracking.

He couldn't bear the idea of being asked how his summer was, having to give a generic answer.

"I was at an internship, I barely went outside."

Instead he tried to find himself a spot at The Corner, to lurk a little longer before facing his housing assignment. He ordered a coffee, though when his name was called and he was handed a smoothie. He looked at it for a long moment, too uncomfortable to correct the person who had made it.

Instead he turned to the person closest to him.

"This uh... this is not what I ordered... do you want this?"

"i've never actually seen the movie," nevaeh admits. she loved halle berry but had never really gotten to into her filmography. "we'll see by the end of the night if i think it's deserving of the title bad movie or not."

nevaeh lets out a small laugh at lany's words and nods. "i'm gonna gain my senior fifteen by the end of this event."

"I'm telling you," Lany begins as she walks towards the next exciting thing offered, "They need to put a limit on how much food we can take because by the end, I'm going to have to be rolled out of here. On the verge of popping like a balloon."

[     salem mitchell,  cis woman,  she/her/hers.   ]     ⸻     have you seen nevaeh porter? yes, the twenty two year old / senior that’s usually wandering around campus? they’re currently focused on botany and studio art, so we’re sure they’ve been super busy with studying. according to rumors, they were michael’s unrequited love and he knew they [ redacted ]. does it make sense considering they’re known for being creative as well as melancholic? either way, the phantom is threatening to bring scary things to light, but let’s hope whatever they’re hiding stays in the dark.

nevaeh grew up in a pretty loving family, even though her parents got divorced when she was young, it was an amicable split and her parents still remained best friends

she grew up being a very talkative person, always asking questions and telling anyone who would listen about her day. she was very open with her emotions.

her being open with her emotions might seem like a strength but it turned out to be a vulnerability because it resulted in her getting bulled in school a lot

a lot of the bullying was more subtle like telling her to ask the boy she had a crush on because he liked her too only for her to get rejected

her classmates treatment of her go into isolation and a depression, the once talkative kid now barely uttered a word unless it was needed

she never really grew out of that sad little girl who wore her heart on her sleeve only for it to get ripped off her shirt

the only solace she finds is in plants and art because when she's painting, she can be as messy and have as many emotions as she wants without being deemed like she's too much and with plants, she can get lost in the woods and talk to plants who won't laugh at her
