Worldbuilding Wednesday: Gangs Of Canopy
We saw a wide variety of gangs menacing the industrial district of Canopy back during Poppy 3, but we didn't really get to spend much time learning about them. So here's a quick rundown of some of the bigger ones.
The Fixer Chicks
An all-women's gang originally created to defend and avenge victims of abuse, they ended up becoming a bit too engrossed with the "revenge" aspect while forgetting about looking out for any actual victims. Now they mostly just go around harassing any poor man unfortunate to cross their path alone, treating emasculation like a game. If a young woman is on the path to delinquency, it's pretty likely that she'll spend at least a few months bumming around with the Fixer Chicks, playing tricks for kicks.
Despite the name, they don't go around castrating people. They have some standards of decency. Also, Everyone gets a super cute leather jacket once they join.
The Prime 8's
Less of a gang and more of a group of mercenaries, "the Prime 8's" refers to the group as a whole, but more specifically to the main team of eight leaders, who each run a chapter with very rigid membership counts. The chapter operating in the Bourbon region are known as the Crazy 108. Some of the larger chapters are more willing to bend the rules than others, and will recruit "honorary primates" in order to pad their ranks on short notice. Features of honorary primates include: opposable toes, large nostrils, very fine posture, or a general willingness to wear an ape costume.
Their head honcho is known only as the Monkey King, and possess a lucky star that allows him to morph into any other kind of primate.
The Hairless Dogma
A cult based around the divinity of being or willingly becoming bald.
They don't participate in gang wars or any kind of general violence at all. They're just a bunch of weirdos trying to make a religion out of their fetish.
The Degenerate Housewives
Extremely bored housewives who decided to clean up the streets one day. All three of them have spent time in prison and it's said they know how to dispose of a body more thoroughly than anyone else. Everyone avoids them just in case.
The Steel Wool
Of all the groups occupying the city, this is probably the most genuinely dangerous. The Steel Wool are a sheep/goat-exclusive gang of caprine supremacists, looking to "liberate" their country from outsider species. Many of their members are remnants of the old Ram government that used to run the country when it was still known as Aries, hoping to reclaim their former glory (ignoring the fact that they were terrible leaders, constantly infighting and running their lands into the ground). They are generally violent toward foreigners, and some of their ranks have committed multiple acts of terrorism, leading law enforcement to crack down especially hard on them. Their symbol is a red flag with a yellow X over it.
They're not considered very fondly by the majority of the country's sheep population, who see them as brutish radicals.
Primary focus of the next public Worldbuilding Wednesday post will be Weather Phenomena of Flora,” but $5 patrons can read it and all other WW posts early.

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Aeroplanes
An "aeroplane" is a free-floating object, typically a saucer, that is commonly used for transportation (or as very ostentatious housing and city-planning in the case of some people), named so for the fact that it is, well, a large plane that hangs in the air. Some of them are small enough to carry only a single passenger and some of them are... big. Very big.
Instead of using the forces of lift and thrust in order to fly, like our own planes, a Floran aeroplane utilizes an effect similar to quantum levitation to hover in place. As Flora doesn't have a magnetic field of its own, this levitation is induced magically using one or multiple carefully balanced engines, and relies on the planet's unique internal "magisphere" as a point of reference for the plane to lock to. This can cause problems when moving the aeroplane over environments like the ocean, where the magisphere's push is stronger and less predictable, an experienced pilot can manually adjust each engine's output to compensate.
Under normal operation, the aeroplace will remain locked in a set position at a set altitude, regardless of gravity or wind resistance, and should only tip based on the parameters put into place by the engines. However, a sufficiently powerful applied force can cause the plane to shift and then lock into a new position, necessitating the standard installation of forcefields on all commercially produced aeroplanes. A plane's engines also only actively consume energy when changing parameters, and otherwise remained locked into their current state once it is set. Accounting for the amount of energy that is radiated and lost over time, an aeroplane could theoretically remain in hovering position for hundreds of years, although once the engine finally shuts down, it would immediately fall from the sky as a unit. ABF or "Abandoned But Functioning" fighter aeroplanes are to be tracked down and gathered up as part of war cleanup efforts, or else risk become very dangerous falling hazards a few decades down the line.
As there is a certain permanence to a well-maintained Aeroplane's flight, they are becoming a fixture in wealthier nations as flying residential areas, with some cities becoming almost entirely constructed out of layered planes. 9 of the 12 Floran High Kings have had their Palaces constructed on city-sized Aeroplanes, flying in over less-developed locales as a flagrant show of status, but each pale in comparison to Emperor Lord Pom's Canis Major, which blots out the sky for miles from the ground and serves as the mobile capital for the Canine Empire as a whole. Maybe we'll get to see that someday.
Primary focus of the next public Worldbuilding Wednesday post will be "Gangs of Canopy," but $5 patrons can read it and all other WW posts early.

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Illnesses
In a world full of species that evolved alongside magic, it is only natural that diseases would also find ways to adapt to and exploit it.
Obviously, not an update for the squeamish.
Magi Teratoma
In the plot thus far, we've seen Kit's father, Renard Darling, stricken with a late-stage malignant Magi Teratoma, a form of cancer that develops when a teratoma forms a second magic-regulating gland that then goes out of control. The gland attempts to flood the bloodstream with a new magical signature that reacts badly with the original, causing the body's immune system to reject and attack itself. In extreme cases like Renard's, the tumor develops a protective pocket around itself that backlashes whenever disturbed, causing irreparable damage to surrounding tissue, which is especially dangerous if in a sensitive location, such as the spinal column.
In cases where full amputation of the afflicted tissue is impossible, there are very few effective treatments, and the death rate is 100% within 5 years of showing symptoms. The Darling family has resorted to using specialized life-support that links Renard and an opossum volunteer's circulatory systems through a device that dialyzes the magic from Renard's bloodstream, slowing the rate of his illness. Since this is only a temporary solution, Kit is currently researching a method to completely rewrite the tumor's disjointed magical signature in order to sync it up with the rest of the body and render it benign.
Rabies
The rabies virus is mostly similar to our own, but its history took a much darker path. During the Bloodied War, the reptiles took advantage of their cold-blooded biology and the lower body temperatures of their opossum conscripts, and intentionally spread plagues of rabies throughout the neighboring mammalian nations.
It only took a handful of carriers released into a crowd to cause a major outbreak in populated cities, and a combination of denial among those infected and paranoia among those not, led to a complete inability to contain and control the outbreaks. If it wasn't for the development of a vaccine to the virus, then the Canine Empire would likely have been absorbed by the Reptiles instead of the other way around. Several centuries later, the relationship between reptiles and mammals remains heated despite cultural shifts.
Odeletta's Curse
A unique ailment in that it specifically affects magical signatures, Odeletta's Curse is a horrifying allergic reaction that develops almost exclusively within a 20 km radius of the fractured opossum Tree of Life. It takes its name from an opossum folk hero, as it was originally believed to be her dying curse toward any magical creature that approached the tree, although it long predated her birth and actually originates from powerful magical radiation given off by the tree's exposed inner tissue.
The symptoms of the disease are extreme and dramatic, lending to its mythical status, as the latent magical energy in the patient's bloodstream slowly begins to activate all at once, leading to powerful unease and an itchy feeling. As the condition worsens, they will feel an intense burning sensation and sparks of raw magical energy will burst from any orifices and open wounds, creating the appearance of a flaming aura around the patient. Eventually, the magical energy reaction becomes so violent that it melts the patient's tissues, quickly and painfully killing them and leaving a burnt husk behind. In cases involving especially powerful magic-users, the reaction can cause their heart to explode with a great deal of force.
While it should seem that this illness would make the heart of the Opossum homeland an ideal haven for them, the area has long since been bombed and salted out of spite, rendering it an inhospitable wasteland.
Next month's public Worldbuilding Wednesday update will be about Aeroplanes, but 5$ patrons can read it and all other WW updates early.
