I'm taking an English course in one of my local community colleges this semester. My professor recently assigned a writing assignment that grew into a project. Our assignment was to pick a student service provided by our community college. I came across a program called PUENTE Project that really stood out to me. It was in 1981 at Chabot College and expanded to 55 community colleges. It was designed to help students adjust to college life and moving forward to bigger greater things. Their mission is to increase the number of Mexican Americans and or latino/a students transferring to four year colleges and universities. It was uniquely made that explores the latino/a experience and also open to all students. I love how they match you with a mentor and counselor that walks by your side up until graduation. Coming from Mexican descendents I think it's a great program to have available to us, it's special. It's important to me to be a positive role model and surround myself around those whom also are and this program really shows to be a positive influence for the community. Our world is full of a lot cruelty and bias is still very strong I love that programs are available to create humbled leadership skills.
