I appreciate how later on in The Murderbot Diaries the groupchat is popping off, like. ALL the time. constantly. Foot-in-mouth on a video call? Groupchat’s sending STOP and yikes emojis. NPC shows increasingly bright red flags? Just made a new chat without her. Making a heroic sacrifice? Everyone has an opinion

Truly one of best parts of Artificial Condition is that ART embraces its new designation and introduces itself as Art to Tapan and the rest of the clients at the end of the book. There is no actual record of its official name in this book. To Murderbot it is only ART, the Asshole Research Transport. Perihelion who? No idea. Not important.

Art saying “I’m not going to hurt your humans, you little idiot,” is living rent-free in my mind
It’s an insult and it’s patronizing, but it’s also - affectionate? Idk there’s something about it I love

I kinda get where ART's coming from if i was a hyperintelligent ship who had just been hijacked, had my squishy humans taken away from me, deleted, had a huge emotional fight with my bestie murdererbot who i only kidnapped a little (and its humans were fine!), finally had a plan in place to get my crew back and the stupid assholes who took my humans in the first place kidnapped my stupid gloomy bestie, AND i had missiles, i would also be like "FUCK IT I'M FUCKING BLOWING UP THE FUCKING PLANET"

Obsessed with Amena. Teenager looks at murderbot and says yeah you're adopting me. Yeah I think you are meaningfully partnered to my mom in your own incomprehensible way. Yeah I'm your kid now. Not optional

So I was listening to Network Effect again and, as usual, this bit jumped out at me:
(a couple pages later)
I've always enjoyed that little bait-and-switch, but what I realized yesterday was that there's a fun meta to it as well - from a Doyalist perspective, it's a fun bit of clever writing because Martha Wells is a good author. From a Watsonian perspective, however, this is Murderbot intentionally incorporating a literary technique that it likely learned from its own favorite stories.
Idk, it was just a very fun moment, going "man, I've got to remember that trick to use in my own writing sometime" then realizing Murderbot had had the same thought.

I'm rereading Network Effect bc it's such a dense book and it lends itself well to rereading (seriously, I completely missed the whole "mutual administrative assistance" thing the first time I read it)
But WOOOF, this excerpt gives me CHILLS every single time. It comes at you like a punch to the gut.

I love how in Network Effect Murderbot's previous assertion that SecUnits don't care about or trust eachother gets contradicted when Three asks after the other Units on its team.
I'm dying for a scenario where Murderbot makes one of its "this thing is a universal truth for all SecUnits"-type statements out loud, or in the feed, and it catches Three off gaurd like:
