Alphabet and pronunciation
Spelling is probably one of the easiest task while learning polish. We basically spell words the way we hear them. You might find the additional letters and digraphs confusing though and that’s why I’m here today! The Polish language uses the Latin alphabet. At least most of it. We completely dropped Q, V and X, because we simply don’t use those letters. In exchange, we came up with our own letters like Ż, Ź, Ś, Ć, Ó, Ł, Ń, Ą, Ę. As you can see, we only added a few diacritic signs to letters you’re probably already familiar with. We also use digraphs like DZ, DŹ, DŻ, CH, SZ, CZ, RZ and one trigraph - DZI.
One letter sounds :
Ą,ą [ɔ̃] - pronounced like French bon, it’s a nasal sound if that helps!
Ę, ę [ɛ̃] - this one is nasal E.
Ć, ć [t̠͡ɕ] - it’s pronounced a bit like ch (chimney) but softer.
Ł, ł [w] - pronounced like w in water.
Ń, ń [ɲ] - it’s a soft N. Pronounced a bit like ni in onion.
Ó, ó [u] - it’s the same thing as u and there’s no difference in pronuncation (oo like in mood or moon)
Ś, ś [ɕ] - a soft S, pronounced like sh in short but softer.
Ź, ź [ʑ] - the ones with kreski (acute accents) don’t really have English equivalents, so it’s hard to give an example. It’s a soft Z.
Ż, ż [ʐ] - pronounced like s in measure. Exactly the same thing as RZ.
Two letters sounds :
SZ - sounds like sh in short.
CZ - sounds like ch in cheating.
RZ - pronounced the same way as Ż.
CH - pronounced the same way as H (like h in heart, for example).
DZ - sounds a bit like ‘ts’ or maybe ds in dads.
DŻ - pronounced as d in adjective.
DŹ and DZI are pretty similar in the way they sound. It’s a bit like j in jeans but I’d say it’s even softer.
Hope this helps!
