Something about the way Silver asks about Jim’s dad in that one scene makes me think he really dislikes deadbeat parents lol

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve censored names because I don’t want anyone to be sent hate, but this post and the amount of likes it got enraged me so much that I had to say something about it. This truly might be the worst take I’ve ever seen about both Katara and Aang.
Let’s address how this is harmful to Katara first. The original poster seems to want Katara to keep her scars for the aesthetic™, which is already a really gross concept, but I cannot stress enough how disgusting it is to want a female character to bear permanent, painful markings in order to give a male character ‘more development.’
We are shown routinely throughout ATLA that scars are not just physical indications of trauma but emotional ones as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only person we see who has scars for “cool” character design reasons is Jeong Jeong, but even then we can assume he received them while he was fighting in the war or because he became a deserter.
All of these characters have these scars to serve as a constant reminder of the Fire Nation’s brutality and ruthlessness. Katara doesn’t need a physical reminder of this. She already deals with the tremendous, traumatizing loss of her mother on a daily basis. How could you possibly think that it would be good to scar Katara just to ‘punish’ Aang while completely disregarding how it will affect her emotionally?
Katara should not have to bear the emotional and physical weight of Aang’s mistakes in order to teach him a lesson.
It also completely undermines her moment when she learns she’s a healer. She gets this incredible gift that is so special to her because it she is able to be both a fighter and a healer. These two sides of her are crucial in her fight for justice and compassion, and the healing aspect is a beautiful addition to a character who is so ‘down in the trenches’ in her approach to achieve these things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This revelation is not only important to Katara as a character but also integral to so many pieces of the plot. If she hadn’t realized she could heal scars, she wouldn’t have offered to try healing Zuko’s in The Crossroads of Destiny. The chess pieces are constantly being set up in Book 1 in strategic and deliberate ways. I’m all for headcanons and fan concepts, but not when they dismantle the plot and characters for, frankly, sexist reasons.
Onto Aang.
There is absolutely zero indication that Aang did not suffer the consequences from burning Katara. He is immediately remorseful. He is so incredibly guilty that he swears off firebending for good. He is attacked by Sokka, and is probably reeling over the idea that his best friends and the only people he has in this world might never forgive him for his mistake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But Katara does forgive him, way faster than he forgives himself for this mistake, as we see him struggle with memory of hurting her well into Book 3.
Zuko burns Toph accidentally, but absolutely no one chastises him for this or holds him to the standards they hold Aang. And sure, you could argue Zuko makes his mistake as an act of self-defense while Aang is just goofing around, but Aang is literally twelve when this happened. Don’t tell me that you never unintentionally hurt yourself or others when you were messing around as a preteen. Sokka lists an array of injuries he’s sustained at the end of The Deserter, and while I’m sure most of them were self-inflicted, I can’t imagine that Katara wasn’t involved in any of those instances. They’re kids - all of them, and Aang is the youngest of the bunch, so of course he still has lessons to learn. That doesn’t mean he should have to suffer the ramifications of his adolescent mistakes forever.
His impatience to learn firebending also stems from the fact that he only has until summer’s end to do so. It’s not an excuse for him not taking Jeong Jeong’s warnings seriously, but it is an explanation. And he learns from it. The way we see him handle fire and the responsibility of bending fire in The Firebending Masters proves that he’s matured.
Tumblr media
Aang, Book 1: Jeong Jeong tried to tell me that I wasn’t ready. I wouldn’t listen.
Tumblr media
Aang, Book 3:  All this time, I thought firebending was destruction. Since I hurt Katara, I’ve been too afraid and hesitant. But now I know what it really is … it’s energy, and life.
The audacity, the gall, the absolute nerve that it takes to say that Aang, a survivor of genocide who lost all of his family and friends and entire culture, “gets let off easy too much” is appalling to me. I’m not sure how many times I have to say that Aang honoring his culture and people and going against the tide - fighting back against the notion that he can’t preserve the traditions and beliefs of his people while being the Avatar at the same time - is not, by any stretch of the imagination, easy.
I don’t know how many times have to say that a child does not deserve to live with the trauma of killing someone, but I’m going to say it again. A CHILD DOES NOT DESERVE TO LIVE WITH THE TRAUMA OF KILLING SOMEONE.
If you truly still believe that the lion turtle/energybending is an easy fix, just read this meta because they explain perfectly why it is not.
And to the last point about Aang ‘getting to be with Katara’ as some kind of “reward” for winning the war, Aang never views Katara as a prize. Need I remind you that he completely drops any type of romantic expression towards her after she rejects his advances in The Ember Island Players? He lets her make the decision as to whether or not she wants to be with him. They get together because the timing is finally right for them - there is no more confusion or violence to prevent them from being together, and Katara no longer has to worry about losing someone she loves.

a lot of people tended to say that sirius and regulus looked alike, but the marauders and their friends never quite believed it. they looked much to different with one brother being so expressive with his facial features and the other wearing a mask that never slips.
it wasn’t until one day when barty had managed to convince regulus to pull a cute little joke on evan which then led to evan chasing them down the halls of hogwarts with nothing but murder on his mind. while running they managed to run into the posse of gryffindors as well as dorcas who was with them, and while passing, the group (bar dorcas) had to do a double take because the boy that had just passed them with a mischievous smile plastered on his face looked just like sirius.

The whole "katara's motherly to Aang, she was coddling him" posts are so dumb because Aang doesn't need a mother and we're never given any indication of him lacking a "mother figure", this kid was raised by monks. You all are just imposing this nonsense dynamic on a kid raised in a different culture
Let alone that Aang is the only character in the gaang who traveled around the world before the genocide and its said and shown multiple times throughout the show that Aang is wise for his age, he doesn’t need a parent 🤦‍♂️
Katara does have motherly traits with the gaang because it was a response to the TRAUMA of losing her mom at such a young age (and she doesn't like to be seen that way, rewatch the runaway) but she’s not their mother and she’s not an exceptionally mature girl and she doesn’t really act motherly towards Aang, she’s caring and empathetic because she can fully relate to him
It does such a massive disservice to both their characters to keep pushing this narrative. Aang didn't lose anything by not having a traditional mom and dad family structure nor does he need one and Katara is such a multi-faceted character, stop adultifying her :/
One of the reasons Katara is so immediately drawn to Aang in their first encounter is because she could act like a kid again. She even says so in the first episode “he brought laughter back into the village."
2024 and we are still running in circles with these bs. The gaang mischaracterization (for shipping reasons oh boy) is insane

i think theres this idea in the general public that the "best" fanfic gets turned into real books like 50 shades of grey. but the truth is that the best fanfic can never be published as an actual book because its intricately woven into the canon material so its inseparable even if you change the names

“spin” - Jegulus microfic - @into-the-jeggyverse - 410 words
CW: drinking / smoking
“Ok! We’re playing fuck, marry, kill!” Barty announces, overly excited.
The party has been over for a while, but there’s still a group of them lingering in the common room playing random drinking games and they’re all fairly drunk by this point.
“Alright…” Barty thinks, looking around the circle “Reg! Fuck, marry, kill–”
“James.” Regulus answers instantly without letting Barty finish.
“Ugh. Reggie, you have to wait for the… wait what?!” Sirius starts then cuts himself off when he registers what Regulus said.
“You want to fuck James?!” Sirius asks looking shocked and appalled.
“You want to marry me?” James swoons with hearts in his eyes.
“I think you’re both focusing on the wrong thing here.” Peter tries to interject.
“I think we should have played spin the bottle instead.” Marlene grumbles under her breath from the other side of the circle.
“The bottle’s pointing at James!” Regulus yells as he starts crawling across the circle to James.
“No one even spun the bottle, Reg.” Dorcas tries to grab Regulus but he’s too far away, so she just falls back to where she was laying in Marlene’s lap.
“I don’t think Reg knows how to play any of these games.” Remus says as he passes a joint to Peter so he can try to grab Sirius who just got out of the chair the two of them are sharing.
“Stop that right now! What is happening!?” Sirius trips on his way to try and pull Regulus off James to stop what has turned into a rather intense make out session.
“Is no one concerned that Reg wants to kill James?” Peter asks seriously as he lets out a puff of smoke.
“He doesn’t actually want to kill James, you high idiot.” Mary rolls her eyes and smacks Peter on the back of the head as she steals the joint.
“I wouldn’t be so sure, Reg has some weird kinks.” Evan says as he’s reaching for the half empty bottle in the middle of the circle that was never spun, but is pointing at James.
“I think everyone’s really drunk and we should all go to bed.” Lily announces from her spot on the floor, dropping her head on the couch behind her.
“I think you’re really pretty.” Pandora looks at Lily from where she is laying upside down on the couch with her legs hanging over the back, her head laying right beside Lily’s.
Regulus and James continue to make out, completely oblivious to everything else around them.

thinking about your last post.....and like, first of all, reggie is a favorite of mine since the books, but i never got the impression sirius hated him? From the way he talked about him, it always felt like...unresolved trauma/feelings? I hated the lot of them: my parents with their pure-blood mania, convinced that to be a Black made you practically royal... → his parents are active participant in this, but when you get to reg's part it goes my idiot brother, → he could've just said my brother, but he decides to call him idiot, because it matters the most this betrayal, because it hurt more, probably, because, as you said, he once loved reg. one can say calling him an idiot is proof that he hates reg, but to me, it shows the hurt of it all. His parents are just that, his parents, but his brother? Is an idiot. Because he listened to them and not to sirius, because sirius probably tried talking him out of that bs. and then the part that gets me soft enough to believe them... that's him. → again, reg is passive in their dynamic, like sirius believe if it wasn't for his parents' bigotry, maybe he wouldn't turn out the way he did. "soft enough to believe them" when sirius hates, is with so much vitriol, he isn't shy. He doesn't care about others opinions. He hates with all his heart, so when I read this part, I often think that one of his biggest regrets is not being able to save reg from his parents, because if only reg had believed in him... all the time, the way sirius talks, is like reg is more a victim of his surroundings than an active participant (it's his brother of course he'll be unreliable) and that to me screams "unresolved feelings" and not the hate he declares. He finishes with He was younger than me, and a much better son, as I was constantly reminded → constantly reminded by his parents, again, the active part in their family dynamic. He could say many awful things about reg, but he chooses to say he was younger than him, and doesn't that just breaks your heart? It breaks mine tbh. Like looking back, now 35, and thinking of a kid in the middle of a war. When he's talking about reg's death, he even says he doesn't believe reg was important enough, because how could he, at only 18. And even in that scene, From what I found out after he died, → it's not "from what people had told me", no. He found out. He went looking for answers, and why is that, if not to understand someone you lost, but is still part of you? sometimes, I feel like people reduce characters to what they think it makes more sense, but love and family are things that don't make sense. So, in sirius's case, I feel like taking what he says at face value is so...when he's so complex! So like, yeah, maybe he did hate reg at that time and my interpretation is wrong or whatever. But to me, what makes him more enticing, what makes his character more compelling, is believing that despite it all, he loved reg still.
Tumblr media
THIS. oh my god. this. like, u get it. u absolutely get it one hundred percent. the fact that sirius is always so abrasive and unapologetic about stating it like it is and saying what he feels (plus his intense dislike for his parents/bellatrix and how open and insistent he is about that) just makes me kind of like. tilt my head and squint about how sirius is about regulus in canon. especially in the very same book where he calls 2 people idiots and 1 of them is his brother while the other is, and i quote, "the best friend i [sirius] ever had" aka james potter. so to all my jegulus lovers out there, sirius thought they were both idiots. match made in heaven if u ask me 😌
but no, like, on a more serious (heh) note, i truly do think it's a huge disservice to sirius' character and also the actual framework of regulus' redemption (depending on who u ask) to pretend like the fact that they were brothers didn't mean anything and reduce them to "oh they hated each other" which im not saying they didn't at any point, im just saying i think they loved each other the whole time too.
i think quite a lot of people kind of just go "well regulus was a bigot sirius would have never cared about him bc of that" or lean into how sirius is very frequently shown to be passionate about hating his horrible family members etc etc. and like, sure ok, if that's the hill u want to die on, go ahead ig. not like sirius black himself is gonna suddenly become real and give u a standing ovation for defending his oh so delicate honor when it comes to the topic of his morals or whatever 💀 but me personally??? im way more obsessed with the nuance and tragedy of the whole situation, not only bc it's very much there with a specific interpretation, but also because its something i connect to more and enjoy. which is, at the end of the day, genuinely what it's all about!!!
so yes. this ask gave me good tingles and made me get up and pace around the room like!!! yes, this is EXACTLY it, you get it, oh you really do!!!

that pottermore line combined with the way he says “my idiot brother, soft enough to believe them” will haunt me for the rest of my days
and "bet my parents thought regulus was a right little hero for joining up at first" which implies that sirius at least partially blames their parents for the path regulus chose and where he ended up (dead)
then this quote: "i doubt regulus was ever important enough to be killed by voldemort in person" which is, first of all, such a sibling thing to say 😭 (even more so a bitter one) and second, implies that sirius doesn't think or doesn't want to think regulus was integrated enough into the death eaters to have caught the favor or attention of the leader
and oh don't forget "from what i found after he died, he got in so far, then panicked about what he was being asked to do and tried to back out. well, you don't just hand in your resignation to voldemort. it's a lifetime of service or death" which. god don't even get me started. there's so much to unpack here bc first, this implies that sirius either A) went looking to find out what happened to regulus, meaning that despite everything, he cared enough about regulus to try and get answers, or B) he learned this some other way we'll never know about, meaning that whatever his reaction was will always be a total fucking mystery, BUT he did at some point learn that regulus wanted to leave the death eaters, even if he never learned why. which leads to the next part of that quote, where he says that there is no way out, once you're in, you're in, or you die. this means sirius either knew or later discovered regulus had made a choice at only sixteen that it's implied and inferred he was encouraged to make by essentially everyone around him (except for sirius), a choice he could not take back, a very huge life decision that quite literally got him killed. at sixteen. only a year older than his godson, who he's telling all of this to in the first place. and like, whatever you may think about how sirius felt about that, it can't change that sirius was aware of this fact.
if u expect me to think sirius "the world isn't split into good people and death eaters/if you want to know what a man's like, take a look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals/he [crouch sr] should've gotten to know his own son/he [crouch jr] might've been in the wrong place at the wrong time" black wouldn't have had feelings about regulus and what happened to regulus, you're insaneeee. like hello???
anyway. many many many thoughts about sirius' feelings for regulus in canon. and what a fucking tragedy those two are. ill never get over it.

Thank you, The Reckoning of Roku, for canonizing one of my favorite headcanons-- namely, that Gyatso was on to Sozin the entire freaking time, and that Sozin and Gyatso cordially hated each other when Roku was in the room. (And uncordially when he wasn't!)
