Pokémon IRL: A Mindfulness Game
There’s a little game I often play when I’m going about my day, and today I would love to share with you.
The world around us is brimming with creatures we call Animals and Plants! Take a walk- whether in the city, in the suburbs, or in the deepest nature, you’re bound to see them all around you if you take the time to look.
As you take note of the creatures you encounter, think about what Pokémon most closely represents that creature. Before long you’ll have a full roster!
My morning today started by walking an Excited Corgi (Yamper), and while walking we found a little cluster of long stemmed mushrooms (Toedscool). Later I passed by a blooming Mexican Tarragon bush with beautiful yellow flowers (Sunflora), and on my next walk with a pair of Poodles (Furfrou) I saw a beetle larva (Grubbin) on the sidewalk before we got to a nearby park with so many squirrels (Skwovet)!
It’s amazing how quickly you can create a team of six based on the things you see, and it also is a great way to be mindful and checked in to your surroundings and forget your worries for a while. What kind of Pokémon have you seen today?
If you want to make a little team graphic, you can use this! It’s updated with Scarlet and Violet’s new Pokémon as well!

I’ve been walking a lot lately and it’s been nice being outside so much more than before.
It’s exciting seeing flowers bloom and bugs coming in and out of their seasons, like the grasshoppers that suddenly appeared in the beginning of fall, or the yards with butterfly-attracting plants swarming with them in the summer.
The other day I got asked what I did as a kid when I couldn’t go on the internet. I was a bug catcher, just like Pokémon’s creator Satoshi Tajiri. I would keep track of bird nests in my neighborhood and watch the babies grow up and fly away. I’d draw pictures of bugs (and sometimes just bring them home) and ask my mom what they were- she didn’t often know but I’d look it up in animal books I checked out from my elementary school library. I’d make my own Pokédex of all the creatures I found in my neighborhood.
When I first moved to LA I was missing that connection with nature. It took me a long time to like the city. I used to live in a suburb with lots of plants, and paths to walk and trails that were safe at all hours of the day. I adjusted, but it was hard.
Until the walking started again. Nowadays I have an app that identifies the bugs for me right on the spot. I know where to look for the wildlife in the city now and connect with nature even in the most densely urban environments where trees and grass are rare. I take pictures of flowers of every color I can find. I know now that it satisfies a need I have always had to seek awareness and coexistence with the creatures that share my home.
And boy does it take me away from the stress of the online world. Its a reminder of what’s real, what’s here, and what’s now.

The Evil Gengar, A dream by PokeKellz.
Hey Dudes and Dudettes. So last night before I was going to sleep I was listening to the Pokemon red and blue soundtrack and then had this strange dream. Here's how it went.
I was in my car when my Boyfriend called me on my cell and told me his friend Tony had won a Bronzong tournament (Which apparently was a battle tournament where only Bronzong were allowed, which seems boring.) Regardless, Tony had won and his prize was 800 BP and an unlocked secret in Lavender town. I told him that was cool and I was Jealous (Cause, duh, I would be.) And continued driving.
Suddenly the dream changed, and I was in Lavender Town and trying to find my way into this Old Man's house. I couldn't place it, but something about the old man was off and I had to figure out what. The town looked like the old 8-bit town we know and love, but was three dimensional because i was walking around in it. It is impossible for me to describe, but dreams are that way.
Someone in town told me the man was not home and I best give up my search for him. I reluctantly decided to exit Lavender Town to the south, where the ocean and all those fisherman trainers are, and when I did, I was attacked by the wild Gengar you see above!
I could feel that this Gengar was really evil, and that I had to defeat it, not catch it. He looked pretty much exactly like the photo above, thanks to photoshop, and while I battled him the game credits rolled behind the whole scene. This Gengar, however, would eat one of his limbs when his health was low in order to regain his health to maximum.
I woke up before I finished the battle, but it was so cool I needed to share. Tell me about your pokemon dreams by sending me a message. ;)

I think what I'm trying to say is Slowpoke is in my top 10.

The ocean is a large place. I never realize how lucky I am to be traveling so close to it- it is such a mysterious biome on this little planet, as unknown to us as space. However, despite all this, I still see a familiar face every now and again- And this time the face was of Lapras, the friendly transport pokemon.
Readers, if I could tell you how much I would love a Lapras of my own- Oh wait, I just did. So I imagine you can understand my happiness at seeing one of these little beauties out swimming free in the wild and not a prisoner of Silph Co, which was too late in the game to actually USE the level 15 lapras the guy gives you, not that I didn't TRY... What am I talking about?
Weird. I just had an out-of-body experience. What's Silph Co?
I like Lapras. The End.

Today was a hectic, busy, fabulously interesting day. It started this morning when I saw a tiny dot appear on the horizon, running toward me. As it got closer, I realized it was my friend Devon. It was unusual to see her out in the wilderness like this because she is usually working, doing yoga or training her lillipup Indiana, so I knew something big was going on.
"Kellz!" She panted when she reached me. "I need your help! My backyard has been taken over by a pokemon and I think it's dangerous!"
I hadn't seen any pokemon yet in the day so I gladly obliged- I could probably take a picture of it once I got there to add to my collection. So I followed her back to her home, where I heard dreadfully loud screeching coming from the backyard.
When I entered the garden, I saw him. My worst enemy and the bane of my early life: PRIMEAPE!
When I was young a primeape stole my nintendo 64 copy of Banjo Kazooie and deleted my 98 percent completed save file. I looked into the eyes of this pokemon and my heart dropped. It was him.
"Primeape!" I challenged, and he turned his eyes toward me with a derisive snort. "If you don't leave my friend alone, I swear I will catch you and confine you to a pokeball for all eternity! I will put you in a box and never speak to you again, and you will be trapped within a dark, sad pokeball for your entire life!" (I was bluffing, of course, and would NEVER treat a pokemon with such cruelty, but Primeape deserved a little of the bad cop routine.)
He stared at me, trying to figure out if I would be true to my word. To emphasise my point, I reached into my pocket and took out a pokeball, ready to throw it. The pokemon's eyes widened and he began to back away. I knew I had won.
"Primeape, I have not forgotten you. But I forgive your past crimes and urge you not to ruin this forgiveness. You are meant to roam the forest, not the streets of Urbantown. Go embrace your destiny." And I returned the pokeball to my pocket.
Primeape looked at me for a long moment and nodded, then swung to the top branch of Devon's tree and away, off to look for a more suitable home. Devon and I cheered and got lunch at Whole Foods, and then I took my leave to continue my Pokemon search.

This morning I awoke to a high fever, complete with an inability to breathe and an impeccably sore throat. It's probably the worst thing, being sick on a Pokemon journey. No one ever talks about these things. But think! Red lives on top of a mountain where it is always snowing! I bet he gets sick all the time!
However, sickness is not an obstacle in my journey, and despite my lackluster attitude, I forge on. Since leaving River City I have been walking through vast open fields, and though I made a pit-stop at Mount Silver, I am now traversing a wonderful hilly landscape with sparse trees and tall grass that rustles every once in a while.
The rusting grass intrigued me. When I woke this morning, aside from that sickly feeling, I had another sickly feeling-that of being watched. The rustling grass was the key. So I pounced. What better way to face your attacker than head on?
However, it was not an attacker in the rustling grass, but a friendly and curious Emolga, out for a daytime rustle. I probably scared him a bit, pouncing into his grass, and he flew off, but not before I snapped a picture. What a sweet and charming little pokemon he is, too.
